245.0. "Metal Media" by RDGENG::GREID () Wed Sep 21 1988 10:59

Let's see what everyone thinks of our beloved Metal Media. I have
been reading Kerrang since about issue 60, and have been collecting
Metal Hammer since it first started, although I am missing 1 issue.

I really heavily on these magazines for album reviews, concert reviews
and when vinyl releases are due. I have a well decorated bedroom
comprised entirely of pages cut out from my Kerrang issues, however
i don't touch my Metal Hammer magazines, because i have them all
and don't wish to ruin them. I have one issue of Metal Forces which
from what i can tell seems to contain more written information than
    pictorial.

My favourite is Kerrang, probably only because it came first. Metal
Hammer has a lot more pictures and posters, but then again it does
come out every two weeks, whereas Kerrang comes out every week.

I enjoy reading them immensley and look forward to reading them
cover to cover. As can be expected some reviews I agree with and
    others I don't

What do you lot think of them.......?
    Preferences...?
Other magazines that i don't know about..?
    Value for money..?

Kerrang are the biggest bunch of tossers in the world.

1 - They giver naff reviews to the good, good reviews to the naff.

2 - They give false concert information.

3 - They are soooooo repetitive.

    4 - They are overpriced.

In the album reviews they gave one album KKKKK (five K's) WITHOUT
LISTENING TO IT. They said "even if we'd had given it a bad review,
you still would have bought it." Now I don't remember what album
it was, but the album may well have been worth the KKKKK, but they
should have given it a proper review first.

Now, on the other hand, "Metal Hammer" is cool, and blows kerrDUNG
off the face of this earth. I can't begin to describe its good
points, but it has everything (except regular nude pix of Lita Ford
    ;-) ).

Hey Giles, which MH are you missing ???

    Tony,
I am missing NO.5 May 1987, 'cos the stupid Newsagents screwed
    the order.

Looking through my collection as i write ( i am dialing in
cos i am off sick at the moment) i have found a copy of a magazine
called Hurricane that is as glossy and as well presented as Metal
Hammer and has a good article on the Scorpions which is probably
why i bought it, and a magazine called Solid Rock which i have never
seen any other issues of, but is an ok mag'. I have to agree with
you Tony, Kerrang really is let down by some of the w*%$#@s that
write some of the reviews, and Metal Hammer is Head'n'shoulders
above it, but sentimentally Kerrang is my favourite.

My boss regularily records the MTV Metal Hammer and Monsters
of Rock programmes off of Cable television for me, so I can compare
the Bailey Brothers against Mick Wall - no comment.! So at least
I can see the videos of new bands and judge them from that than
    magazine reviews.

Have you checked out RAW yet ?? They gave away a free pilot issue
with the Donnington tour programs, and the first two issues have
already hit the streets, with free flexi-discs with tracks from
the new Ozzy album and another one (can't remember). It looks good,
but the publisher is Jonathon "d*ckhead" King, still can't have
    everything !!

BTW - are you at DETHpark ???

    Cheers,

I used to buy Kerrang but I found the faults thats Tony has already
mentioned with it. I then started to buy metal hammer which is slightly
    better.
One of the big faults about metal hammer though is it is about 3
weeks behind Kerrang on upto date news.
There is 2 things that I really hate about both these mags, 1 is
when they are writting about an interview with a band, they normally
spend about half the article talking about how they go there. The
other thing that annoys me is that they give 1 person the album to
review and that review is printed. From this conferance alone we
know that some people think an album is brill where others think
its s**t. Although I have noticed that in the last few issues of
MH that I have bought they have given a table with about 10 people
    grading the album.

No offense -.2 but in my opinion Circus magazine is more for
the teen scene of HM, what I mean is that it seems to have
more of what the public, fans, and puppy-love sick girls want
to hear instead of the actual facts. I could and probably am
be wrong since I have'nt picked one up in a few years but I
still see them on the mag racks and they're still the same cover
wise. Myself, I like Rolling Stone (and it's probably the same
format as Circus) but it's seems to me to be more realistic
and have more variety of the enterainment biz. If it's any con-
sellation, I like lookin' at the pic's in Circus, they get some'
    	decent live shot's somtimes.
