221.0. "Budgie" by ROCKON::RADLER () Thu Sep 01 1988 13:16

Does anyone remember Budgie? They were one of Pioneers of
Brittish Hard Rock that never really made an impact in the USA. They
release their first album in 1971. They had a Black Sabbath flavor without
the Satanic lyrics. They were a three piece featuring Burke Shelley
on Bass and lead vocals. He also was the main writer for the band.
He had this incredible urge to write the most bizarre lyrics and
song titles. Tony Bourge, the guitarist was excellent and played
some of the most inventive guitar passages. Ray Phillips played
drums on the first 3 classic albums. Pete Boot played on the 4th
and all the remaining by Steve Johnson (?). Tony left in 1978-79
and was replaced by John Thomas on guitar. This lineup changed the
sound to a real heavy metal sound and released the classic Power
Supply album. I think they disbanded in around 83 but this I'm not
    sure of.

I heard one of the new Metallica tunes from "...And Justice For
All". I forget the name, but it's supposed to be a Budgie cover.
Now that I think of it, it reminded me of "Crash Course in Brain
    Surgery".

What is a budgie? I've heard it talked about in Monty Python skits.
Isn't it some kind of pet unique to the U.K.?
    Mr. Dallison?

A budgie, is a small, exoticlly coloured bird, which old grannys
have on a six foot high stands, in a cage. They normally come in
pairs and are often given silly names like "Bill and Ben" or "Tick
    and Tock" etc.

Cats love 'em, my sister had two and they used to fight like mad,
an one day she found one of her budgies beat to buggery by the
other so she called one Tyson and the other Spinks :-)

Speaking of Budgie, Metallica covered another song, Breadfan, on

Well, if "battery" is another word for "fan", and "Nissen" is
    	another word for "bread" ...

... then a "breadfan" is a "Nissan battery".

    Please, guys, I'm eating.

At the end of the tune, on the EP, it says, (in a little girls voice:)
"Mommy, where's Fluffy?" So, I seem to think that Fluffy's in the
    breadfan. A tragic story.
