216.0. "Taylor, Andy" by ANT::SLABOUNTY (I like njection but'd rthr be blown) Tue Aug 30 1988 07:29

Andy Taylor useta play guitar for Duran Duran, but got sick of
not being to use his guitar talent - so he broke away and went
to 'The Power Station', where he recorded songs such as 'Some
Like It Hot' and 'Bang a Gong'. He liked it a little more, but
I don't think he was real happy with that either. So he broke
this engagement off also, and started his own band.

He has 2 albums of his own, the second titled 'Thunder'. I don't
remember the name of the first, but it included the song 'Take
    It Easy on Yourself'.

'Thunder' includes "I Might Lie" and "Don't Let Me Die Young".
"I Might Lie" has some GREAT guitar in it, as well as a good soft-
to-hard-and-loud intro that'll take out your eardrums on a good
    stereo system.

If you're leary about listening to an ex-Duraner, don't be.

                                                       GTI

I cannot stand DD's music, but Andy Taylor on his own is
okay. I haven't heard much from him other than Bang A
Gong, and Some Like It Hot...

I never really thought of him as HM, though. Guess I
better open my ears to his most recent stuff, huh?

216.3Andy with Rod now...HAZEL::STARRYou ain't nothin' but fine, fine, fine!Tue Aug 30 1988 11:588
Andy Taylor is now playing with Rod Stewart. He plays all the guitars on
the new album (which is Rod's best in over a decade), and is also going
to be playing on the tour (Prov. C.C., Centrum and the Boston Garden all
have shows in late September).

And I agree - a pretty good rock'n'roll guitarist. Who woulda thought?

I was into DD on their first lp (Planet Earth...hey, it was a cool
funk/rock lp before they went commercial!), and remember reading
an interview with DD shortly thereafter. They were discussing the
band and they said they wanted a guitarist that was a cross between
George Benson and Jimi Page...they got Andy Taylor. They said when
they got him in the band, they had to slow him down cuz he used
to play 4 times as fast as everyone else. WHo would have thought???

Of course Andy ALWAYS used Marshall's in concert with DD, he just
added more stacks when he went solo, that's all.

I went to see Rod Stewart Monday night at Saratoga Performing
Arts Center in NY and I'm afraid he wasn't there. They had some
other guy playing, who's got an album coming out soon, along with
his regualr guitarist. Not bad wither, since he played the Jeff
Beck part of `People Get Ready' and really made that axe cry !

Hey I like Duran Duran - I saw them on the RIO tour a few years
    back.

Andy Talylor is pretty good - as far a Brummies go.

BTW - The Power Station Project (Micheal Des Barnes <of Chequered
Past> John Taylor <DD Bass player> Tony Thompson <??> and Robert
Palmer <:-)>) was on temporary anyway, whilst the rest of DD did
    the ARCADIA project.

BTW2 - Its *not* BANG A GONG its GET IT ON.

re: a couple back

Tony Thompson was the drummer for Chic.

(He also played for Led Zep at Live-Aid. He was supposed to join a reformed
LZ, but it didn't work out - he drank too much. But then the reunion never
got out of the rehearsal hall anyways.)

> I thought Phil Collins played drums for Zep at Live Aids?

Well, yes and no. See, there were two drummers on stage with LZ.
Phil Collins seemed to be there mostly for looks, while Tony
Thompson was the real drummer. Tony is the one who rehearsed for
two days with LZ, and he played at the show.

Phil,on the other hand, was just sort of sitting in and 'jamming'
with them. If you watch the video, you'll see that Phil isn't even
playing all the time, and he's watching Thompson for his cues.

So while Phil was there, he was not the real drummer.

Ok - I'm ready to take a hit on this, but...

I'm a BIG Duran fan - have been since before the first album,
and I have about 30 (yes, thirty) imports/12", etc. _Duran Duran_
(both the U.S. versions, and the UK version) is a killer funk rock
album, and _Rio_ (once again, all versions, but especially the U.S.
version) is even better - both are laced with Andy's HM influence
and John's funky bass lines, not to mention Simon's carefully
structured vocals. If one were to listen to Duran BEFORE all the
hype and teenie-attention, one's attitude might be different...
    ;-)
IMO, Andy was much better in Duran - although I like his current
work, he seems to overuse the same chord found in Bang A Gong (Get
it On) off of _33 1/3_. His inventiveness in fitting his style to
Duran's made him much more interesting. He did cut loose in concert
quite a few times, and both shows (_Rio_ and _7..._) were among
the best all-around shows I've been to.

I saw a concert on TV once where Duran Duran were playing "Union
of the snake" live (killer track) and Andy Taylor was having *fun*
with that whammy bar, doing dive bombs all the time and seriously
pissing everyone else in DD off by the looks on their faces (This
was when he had real long hair and just b4 DD split up).

Best cuts ?? Wild Boys, Save a Prayer and Union of The Snake.

Anybody see the uncensored "Girls On Film" video ?? I bought the
DD video and ohhhhhh....I wish I was an ice cube :-)

Sorry if people think this isn't HM, but b4 we get flamed we are
talking about a HM guitarists past band - so (insert loud rasperry)
na na nana na !!!! ;-)

I have to admit, that video would have been rated XXX by good
ol' Tipper. Ditto on the ice cube ! ;^)

Save a Prayer - Excellent use of keyboards on this one !

But in keeping this with the base note......my ex-girlfriend used
to drool over the TV when Andy Taylor video's were on. Made a short
life for the TV. <sigh> :^)
