201.0. "Rating music shops!" by ANT::TURBA (PARENTS MANGLED by RUNAWAY CHAINSAWS) Wed Aug 17 1988 12:48

I started this note to rate local music shops. I't can be a
music instrument store, or just a record shop. Give pro's and con's
, if any. I know that this conference is wide spread, so if your
in England, or Alaska, still give the name and why you go there,
or why you don't go there. It will give everyone in the conference
a chance to try new stores, within distance, or just plug your
    local merchant.

    		I'll start with a reply...

201.1A good day..ANT::TURBAPARENTS MANGLED by RUNAWAY CHAINSAWSWed Aug 17 1988 13:0440

Well the reason I started this topic, is because I finally had
    a good experience with a music shop. I went into E.G. Wurlitzer's(SP)
in Framingham, the new shop, across from rock-a-mania records, with
a friend of mine. He is a guitarist, and was looking for a effect.
I myself , as always was looking for a bargain. While I was looking
through the cymbals, Mark was getting help from one of the
salespersons. I don't know his name, but he was alot of help. Mark
wanted to sample a bunch of effects. The saleperson took 6 out of
the cabniet, and let him use them. Mark them told the salesperson
he had a Gibson, and a fender amp. The salesperson went over to
the wall grabbed an S.G. and hooked all the effects through a fender
70 watts amp. He then showed Mark what each effect did, and ended
up making a sale. He put a good half hour into the sale!!! Most
important of all, he knew what he was talking about. I watched alot
of his demonstration, he was a good guitarist to boot!! The
salesperson was a guy about 23 long hair and a really cool dude.

I Usually go to Jack's drum shop for my needs, but found the
prices here no to bad, cymbals especially! I highly recommend the
shop, even though I still cannot pronounce it!!?!?

    	Pro's
    	-----
    Good salespersons
    Decent prices, on most items.
Better than going to Boston, for me anyway!
    Good selection.

    	Con's
    	-----
Nothing is directly priced, you have to ask for a price on most
items in the store. You ask someone, and they look it up on a list.

    					F.M.

P.S. Mark bought a Programmable Distortion for 109.00

Guitarists is this a decent price??
201.3Wurlitzers, RT 1 Portsmouth, NHPLEXUS::V5REGISTRARMon Aug 22 1988 21:2715
I put in my vote for Wurlitzers in Portsmouth, NH.

Stevie has made a few major purchases there, and they are always
really nice and patient. I mean, he gets a little outrageous
sometimes, I must admit. He'll look at something once a month for
a year (trying it out about every other time) before he buys it.
The guy (Jim) has always been great about it, letting him choose
his own guitars to try effects with (new Jacksons, ESPs, etc) without
even flinching. The prices are good and they aren't jerks like
the Boston people. This store is a lot more laid back, being NH
and all, and they run it completely differently.

If anyone checks it out, tell Jim we said hi.

Best record shop in READING, ENGLAND. Good stock of HM CD's
at reasonable prices. Only bad point is that they are usually about
a month after London gets them.

In London. Specialist HM record shop. Just about everthing
you could ever want. CD's a bit pricey.

Strawberries (in Shrewsbury, anyways) had a "sidewalk sale"
going on last night when I got there ... a whole bunch of
    	records for $1, and CD's for $7. I didn't buy any CD's,
but I got 4 records ... watch this conference for a few
    	new notes.

Dunno how convenient this is for many of you, but a good record store to shop
in is Disc Diggers in Somerville, in Davis Square. I went there this past
Saturday, and picked up these:

Gary Moore - Corridors of Power CD
Yes - Big Generator CD
Tommy Conwell - Rumble CD
Little America - Fairground CD
Blue Murder - LP
Testament - LP (not the new one, the previous one)
Squeeze - Babylon and On LP (no comments!)

Anyways, the total for all of the above was under $20! Each of the albums was
$.99 (in new condition) and none of the CDs were over $3.99. They had some CDs
as cheap as $.99 and $1.99!!!

Well, I'm not writing to rate a music shop, but this seems like the
best place to put this. I was in Caldors in Chelmsford last night and
they have MANY LP's on sale for $1.99 and $2.99. Most were kind of
YUCH, but they had some Black Sabbath w/Dio, Zebra, a lot of Twisted
Sister, and a few other rockers. It may not be worth going out of your
way for, but if you're n the area anyway, you may find something you've
    been looking for.

It was there last time I went. It's on the corner of South Winooski Ave and
College Street. Diagonally across from the Nikelodeon theaters. You go down
the stairs since the store is below sidewalk level...
