197.0. "How Names are made." by ANT::TURBA (Cop didn't see it,I didn't do it) Fri Aug 12 1988 11:30

    	Here's a topic I think people will like.....

    	It's about names of bands, and how they got there names...

    	If you know how a band got it's name, tell us how..

    	I'll give an example in the first reply.

197.1NAME GAME!!ANT::TURBACop didn't see it,I didn't do itFri Aug 12 1988 11:3820

    	AC/DC got there name by Angus's sister. She thought it was a
    	Good name refering to power. Not knowing at the time that
    	in Australia AC/DC meant that you went both ways....
    	They caught S**t for that!!

    	LED ZEPPELIN got there name when a promotor (I THINK) said
    	thery would flop and fall like a LEAD ZEPPELIN. They dropped
    	the a and the rest is history.

    	VAN HALEN use to be called MAMMOTH until GENE SIMMONS saw them
    	playing in a night club, gave them money for their first record,
    	and they changed their name......

    		If any information is incorrect, please feel free to
    			correct me. I am trying to remmember this from
    			books and mags...

    Led Zep got their name from a quote by Who drummer Keith Moon.
    Before their first American tour as the New Yardbirds, Keith commented
    that they would go over like a lead balloon.

197.5WILD EYED SOUTHERN BOYSUSADEC::BJUBINVILLEMon Aug 15 1988 03:268
      The once was a group in an old abandoned warehouse, owned by one
    of the memebers, practicing lae at night. A new by house called
    the cops because it seemed like a wild party. The cops showed up
    and the band members came to the windows. The cops said "Come out
    with your hands up or we'll let the .38 Specials do the talking.
    And that's how they got their name..... .38 Special!!

    Kiss got their name out of a compromise between paul and gene.
    gene wanted to call the band F$#k!

    Re .1
    I thought AC/DC was off of Angus' sister's sewing machine?
197.7The drawing Lep....CECV03::OPNOTESTue Oct 25 1988 15:2513
    DEF LEPPARD got their name from a drawing that Joe Elliott drew.

    A drawing of a leopard with an old fashioned hearing cone
    sticking out of his ear.

    The original way it was spelled was DEAF LEOPARD but people got
    the wrong impression of the band. They (listeners) thought they
    were trashy, so they changed the spelling to what it is now.

    note: yes Joe Elliot was into art work!!

    Bad English took their name from a bad shot in pool. "Got some bad
    english on that ball, Jack. Care to rack'm up again? AH HA HA HA HA!"

    Jamaican Vacation was a name thought up for us by an affectionate
    female follower of the band...it described the reggaeish music we USED
    to play in the early days (just ask Greg House!), but also it lead
    reference to some of the dark vices one of the band memebers (the
    former drummer) found interest in.
197.12Grandma PearlCOMET::VEGAFThu Oct 21 1993 14:0210
    It was said that Grandma Pearl was known for making a Jam that was
    a halucanagen (sp), out of payote dust. She was Eddy's Grandma, they
    claim that the recipie was lost.

    I heard the "Pearl Jam" name was gotten from some baseball player's
    nickname they all worshiped (I donno, I don't do sports, but that is
    what I remember from eMpTyV reports).

	I think you're talking about Earl the Pearl, but I still contend
	it's the Hallucinogenic thing. "TEN" thanks Grandma Pearl in the

    why I remembered it in the first place!
197.24HOW THE CRUE BECAME MOTLEY...KDCA01::CDCUP_TORRENWed Feb 16 1994 13:307
    The guys in Motley Crue (with Vince) were sitting around at a bar,
    and a friend came in and said "Hey isn't this a Motley looking Crew",
    they that that was cool so the wrote it down, they were gonna call
    the band CHRISTMAS...But they also said if any member of the Crue
    dies, or decides to leave, they would have to change the name of
    the band because it'd be a different band...Bullsh!t, thats probably
    another reason I sided with Vince....
