137.0. "Castle Donnington 1988/1989/1990" by REPAIR::EDWARDS (Watch out, here comes a LAWNMOWER!) Thu Jul 07 1988 11:20

O.K. then. It's about time we had a say about the U.K. Monsters
    of Rock.

    Venue as ever Castle Donnington

    Date 20th August

The Bands Helloween, Megadeth, Gus'n'Roses, Kiss, D.L.R., Iron Maiden.

It is rumoured that this is Maidens last tour so you all had better
get out there and see them. This promises to be the biggest ever
C.D. with Maiden promising twice the P.A. of last year plus a few
surprises. I expect a modest 100,000 Metalheads there.
Will you be one?? Anyone going from Reading??

Speak now before it's too late,

    		Darron.

After reading an on_the_road interview with Maiden in last weeks
Metal Hammer, it appears that Iron Maiden's PA will be about 80
feet high and that's probably about twice as loud as last year.
The stage will be bigger than their American set, which is their
biggest yet. Interview had a lot of info about the stage and the
running order but I won't spoil anyone's fun by revealing all.
I wonder if Axl (Guns'n'Roses) is up to it. Are the nodes on
    his vocals chords bad??

I would like to find out if anybody would be interested in arranging
an eyeballing session down at C. Donnington, before or during the
concert. I will be travelling down from Ayr with a party of 10 on
Friday morning so we should arrive late Friday afternoon in time
to enjoy the festival spirit before the concert.

P.S. I know its difficult to find anyone at Donnington but I managed
    	it last year.

I'm going down with a minimum number of 12, and we'll be sitting
under an Iron Maiden flag, more than likely. Just look out for
the mass of drunken bodies. Also I'll probably see ya at the bottle
    fight.
Back to the question, Yeah an eyeball could be a good idea.

    See ya'll there,

We will be going to the camp site on Friday and will try to get
parked next to the enterance gate to the campsite so that we can
tie the scotland flag to the fence. We will also be meeting a few
friends from England under the Dunlop bridge after the first band.
So look out for the flag if you are there.

Yeah, I was wondering the same. I heard that HM did not show it's best
face there this year. Something that there was a 'stampede' in the
crowd, and at least two kids died. Anyone have any details?

    	Tony? Were you there??

I was listening to AAF this morning and they said that Iron
Maiden issued a statement saying something to the effect of
    	this....

They were hoping this particular show was going to be the
highlight of the career, but instead it became a tragic
    	day filled with sadness.

From what I understood, two kids were trampled and died,
two are in critical condition and a few others were
    	hurt.

There was a stampede when Guns N' Roses hit the stage, two
people were killed on the day and since then the two in
hospital have died. I've heard that they are now trying to
    ban the Donington Festival.

I thought the best act of the day was Dave Lee Roth -
Maiden's show was excellent but the sound was terrible.
Can't remember what songs they played, perhaps Tony
or MoshDuck can help you out there.

Guns N' Roses seemed to slow their songs down when they
what was happenning to try and calm the crowd down - they
certainly made a quick exit from the stage!

Some of the tunes I remember Maiden playing (I'd been knocking
back the home brew since 6 o'clock that morning, they didn't
hit the stage til after 8pm.):

    	22 Acacia Avenue

    	Infinite Dreams
    	Can I Play with Madness
    	Run to the Hills
    	Sanctuary
    	The evil that men do
    	The Number of the Beast
    	The Prisoner
    	Running Free
Seventh son of a seventh son
    	The Clairvoyant
    	2 Minutes to Midnight
    	The Trooper

    Well people, I'm back.

Me and my girlfriend pushed our way to the front, clad with gallon
containers filled with beer and plastic bin liners (My over half
bought her camera - gulp!! - got some goodish GnR pix). We were
about 30 feet from the stage, just offcentre. We were swaying about,
lost in the sea of people for what seemed like ages when HELLOWEEN
were announced, and they leapt on the stage, drums pounding with
the familiar DUM DUM DUM DUM DUMDUM DUM DUM DUMDUM filling my ears,
we got knocked about something chronic and I think I accidentally
stubbed my ciggy out on this guys neck in front of me 8-|, but we were
being pushed about sooo much by the time he had said words to the
effect of "ouch" (or more like "what f****** little w****r did that"
etc..) and looked round we were away from him. I could smell the
familiar smell of WACKY BACKY in front of me and looked up, only to
notice a plastic bottle shoot over the top, like a sodding Cruise
    Missile !!

I was trying to watch the show when my other half said "Tony, you're
taller than me, take me a picture please" there I was, fighting to
stay on my feet, and she wants a friggin' picture !!!

Backstage, I bumped into Steve Harris at the bar, and we saw Lemmy
and Wurzel from Motorhead, and Bob Catley from Magnum.

It was a real shame about the kids who were killed. Four American
Serviceman were also stabbed nearby, I don't know if they are ok.
The crush when Guns N' Roses came on was unbelievable. I lost my
girlfriend, but who care ;-) the pounding beat of "Its So Easy"
was holding me to the groud, and hell nor fire was gonna move me.

BTW - GnR played a new track called "Patience". "twas good.

Just in case you haven't heard. Castle Donnington won't be on this
    year.

It seems as though the local authority and the organizers couldn't
agree on various terms in the license.

In effect, around a month ago, the authority granted a license but
specified a crowd limit of 70 000. The organizers appealed. By a
week ago, the terms of the license still weren't acceptable, and
the organizers are going to court over the issue.

As with all legal processes this will take an inordinate amount
of time which will mean (what ever the outcome) there will not be
time to arrange a festival this year.

So, bottom line, the organizers have cancelled this years show but
will continue to work with the authority and the legal people to
ensure that a proper bash can take place next year.

Keef. (who's sorry to be the bringer of bad tidings for those thinking
    	   of going to Donni).

Out of the ashes of last years fiasco, Donnington 1990 (the tenth anniversary)
rises like a Phoenix, with (IMO) the best line up ever.

For those who don't know the bill is as follows:

			W H I T E S N A K E

			 A E R O S M I T H

			    P O I S O N

			 Q U I R E B O Y S

			   T H U N D E R

Whitesnake, with their one Brit, peddling some fair tunes. Lets hope they get
back to their blues root soon.

Aerosmith, well what can you say about them, they're great.

This will be Poison's first gig on British soil (well it will be if they don't
erect the stage ;-)

Young hopeful Brits The Quireboys get some well deserved recognition after
slogging round the London (and other) circuits for severeal years. Great if you
like Rod Stewart.

And finally the best of the lot (again IMO) Thunder. This band really do some
excellent good ol' stompin' rock music. If you get the chance get their debut
opus "Back Street Symphony", or better still go and see them live, they really
are terribly good.

As for attendance ?

I suppose Flip, TTT, Moshduck and Keef will be well miffed as there is no mosh-
type music. Well tough ! I really will enjoy myself. Emma and I will be there.

So will we see anybody else there ?

I heard on the radio t'other day that tickets for Donnie 1990 are selling
very fast. If you haven't got one already do ASAP (I've also heard that
there won't be any available on the gate). I'd especially recommend anyone
coming in from other parts of the universe to make sure that someone gets them

I'm sure Metallica will headline one year but the support will have
been on the rock scene for a shorter time. The formula for headlining
seems to be popularity+length of time playing major venues, therefore

That really doesn't prove much, it didn't come close to the sales of
"Back In Black". AC/DC has much more mass appeal then Metallica ever
will. Metallica fits too much of a nitch market. Yeah, they're doing
much better then any of the other thrash bands around (due mostly to
the airplay/video for "One"), but that's really not saying a whole lot
in comparison to the kind of sales that really popular bands achieve.

Here follows a very short review of the Donnington concert 1991! As it
has already been covered fairly accurately in Metal Hammer (or was it
Kerrang?) I don't intend to get into details. Anyway it was so long
ago that I cant remember it precisely!

It was a beautiful day weatherwise! My wife dropped me off at the gate
complete with a gallon of best rats piss! English beer is the worst in
    the world (sorry after French!).

I found a convenient spot, next to some good looking girls, and settled
down to wait for the first act. Tried to find Flip behind the sound
wotsit but was unsuccessful! As I don't know what she looks like, it
was not an easy task! Still, got to talk to some nice girlys! (^8*.

Why are the toilets so far away at Donnington?

OK. First on was the Black Crowes! They started off quite well,
unfortunately they could not maintain it! After the first 2 numbers
they seemed to lose interest, so did I! Dont think they are quite cut
out for a venue like Donnington!

Next on were Queensryche! They started with 'Revoloution Calling'!
Was OK, but didn't really reach the parts that the beer was reaching!
Best I Can, was definitely the best they could! Really good rendition!
Empire was a dead loss, way to complex for the Donnington arena! They
also played a few more from Empire and also The Warning and O:MC.
Don't remember anything from Rage though! They went out with a whimper
though by relying on Silent Lucidity for the final number! Bad
mistake guys! Altogether, not too bad considering that again
Donnington is not the sort of venue for them, nor the time of day!
    Good atmosphere they generated!

Motley Crue, well what can I say! I disagree with Metal Hammer here,
the Crue totally sucked! Apart from the fact that every second word
wotsisface came out with was a 'F' word! Total scuzzball it was a
mixed age group at Donnington and I wish they would tell bands to cool
it! I like some of the Crues stuff, but they definitely did not give a
good account of it here! Also not a good intro for their new album!

Metallica. Yaaaay, at last, a band too get your teeth into! They came
out with 'Enter Sandman' of course! I can't remeber the sequence now,
but I know that they covered the usual favs like 'Fade to Black',
'Master of Puppets' (slight slip up by Kirk on that one), 'Ride the
Lightning' and so on. Can't remember anything from AJFA, but that is
hardly surprising as they did that at their last Donnington and it did
not go down well! They also played a few things from their new album,
and it sounded mighty fine! I was not familiar with the album then so
I did not know the titles! Having bought the CD since I can safely say
that it has replaced RtL as my favourite Metallica! The boys really
got the crowd going! The air was just a solid mass of flying plastic,
you had to see it to believe it! Definitely Metallicas show!

The wait for AC/DC was too long, so I only stayed for a couple of
numbers and realised that it was just going to be 'more of the same'.
I really wish they could change just a little bit! Bl**dy boring!

By this time, I was suffering from a slight case of sunburn and too
much bad English ale, so I decided to leave early before the crowds!

All in all, a good days music, no particularly startling performances,
but it was well worth going as there is nothing quite like the
Donnington atmosphere! Oh yes, and out of 73,000 people who attended,
there were only 3 arrests (none for violence) so it also goes down as
    the most peaceful Donnington!

If I tried that I would get stuck! Anyway, I did what nearly everybody
else did, in emergency (i.e. during an act) I used the sound stage.
Surprised it didn't sink and disappear with the amount of residual
moisture that was floating around it! In the break, I trudged all the
way to the rear for a curry and a pee!

Radio 1 FM covered the whole thing "live" (I'll explain the use of the
quotes later). That is what I spent all of Saturday listening to, much to
the chargin of my SO (then again, she gets to see as much of Wimbledon
and Soap Operas as she wants!), and the delight of my two sprogs (aged 4 and
2)!!

The Almighty sounded great. W. A. S. P. sounded a bit messy, but then again
I was being hounded by the sprogs for something to do (it was RAINING HARD).
Thunder sounded OK as did Skid Row.

The IM set sounded superb -- 2 hours.

137.169LINGO::FAGGTrampled Underfoot by the Ace of SpadesTue Aug 25 1992 14:2629
OK, some additional explanation is needed here for those in the colonies
and those who had the pleasure of not being in my household on Saturday.

Radio 1 FM is a national radio station here in the UK and they broadcast all
of the Donnington bash. However, to cut down the delays between acts
(I can think of no other reason!), they started broadcasting 1 hour AFTER
the show started. This meant that they were broadcasting tapes of one
band whilst taping another. They caught up by the time that Iron Maiden
were on, and their set (2hrs) was covered live.

Now, as I mentioned I was having to maintain some sort of domestic decorum
whilst listening to THE event of the year. So I decided to make tapes of
the sets for my personal listening later (ie, NOW) -- perfectly legal in
case any of you are worried.

I missed the Almighty because they started the tape of them EARLIER than
published in the listing magazine (the Radio Times). At that point I was
in the middle of some culinary complication which meant I couldn't start
the tape recorder until they were half way through their set. Yet in the Kitchen
I had another radio tuned to the concert and from what I heard the
Almightly sounded GREAT.

All these complications of my personal circumstances are of no interest to
many of you, but explain why I didn't manage to get the Almighty on tape.

All I can say is a big thank you to Radio 1 FM (part of the BBC) and the
bands concerned for broadcasting the event. It sounded great from my end!

down the front for the most of the Maiden set without getting crushed
and the queues for the Toilets were not that bad.

The sound system sounded crap for most of the day unless you were right
down the front but thats not unusual for Donington.

    Cheers
    Mark

I taped some of the Maiden set just out of curiosity a sort of
let's see what they're up to these days. And...................
quite frankly I think they should've give up a long, long time
    ago.

All the classic Maiden styles were in there, problem being they
were in the new stuff as well. You know, there's the galloping
song where Harris' bass is louder than the guitars, the epic
slow & doomy start with a breakneck finish, and the chugging
-punchy type number with Nicko's very, very familiar fills.
Poor old Maiden, they've become a parody of themselves when
they should've died with their boots on. Give up now 'Arry,
    please?

    barry.

I don't get it! You people put down Metallica for changing their
style, and you also put down Maiden for keeping their style! If you
liked them before because of the way they played, what's the big deal?!

Now if the songs aren't good, that's one thing, but to like them once
because of their "galloping" style, and now to not like them for the
same reason just doesn't make sense!

I guess me and Criscobar are the only ones who know good bands when we
hear them. Except of course for Men At Work! :')

First off, I've never mentioned Metallica in this conference. 8^)
As for Maiden well it's hard to put my finger on why they don't
appeal to me anymore. Perhaps it's because they really have'nt
developed on from where I left off, circa "Somewhere In Time".

Some bands I will accept the same old business from year in
year out because that's part of their appeal i.e Motorhead,
Ramones etc but with Iron Maiden it's different. To me each one
of the first four studio albums sounded different (yes I know they
got a new singer after 2LPs) but still retained Maiden trademarks.
From thereon the band stagnated and everytime I hear a single or
catch an album track, I just think, well, what have they done which
has been worthwhile since 1984? It's probably because I expected more
from them when I should'nt have.

Maybe there's some truth in that saying that someone who hates something
or someone with a passion must have once loved that something or someone
with a passion. That possibly applies to a lesser degree here. Hang on,
I'll stop this before it get's to slushy. 8^)

Maybe because their sound is getting dated. Metallica's old sound
    wasn't sounding stale to me.

No double standards here, the fact is that I don't like Metallica's new
direction and I'm tired of IM's old sound. The fact that I don't like
Maiden's newer songwriting doesn't help that situation. It's like
listening to the same album over and over for years. I can't do it, I
get tired of stuff after awhile and want to move on. Moving on is
fine, but it doesn't mean I'll like every change in direction someone
    does.

Iron Maiden's sound has changed. There's a big difference between
Piece of Mind and Seventh Son. I can understand you don't like

I'm sorry, my ears don't hear much of a difference. Their songwriting
style is still very similar, the songs are still in the same keys, and
the basic sound is very close. Perhaps to a big fan, you can discern a
difference, but about the only thing I hear is that Bruce Dickinson's
voice has gone downhill badly and that they replaced one guitar player
with someone who plays a little differently.

To me I guess. I listened to it more than once. ..And Bruce
Dickinson's voice was AMAZING on 7th son.
