121.0. "Trix and Lix" by SAMURI::COOPER (Bag it, Mr. Boo-Boo!) Wed Jun 22 1988 16:20

Well, it seems that some people were getting pretty uptight about
the idle-chatter that was going on in appropriate notes, but I got
    a good idea for one...

Since we seem to have a proliferation of good guitar players (and
we all know you never stop learning!), How about a discussion of
some good guitar trix and lix ?

Personally, (and selfishly), I figure I have a lot to gain by this
discussion. Especially, with some berkley grads.

Try not to be too technical though...

I always wanted to set up 5 marshall stacks, then with a wireless
control and the guitar tuned to an open a minor chord, drop the
guitar (chord ringing) from the top of the of the world trade center.

121.2slide guitar?POWER::STARRWed Jun 22 1988 18:2212
OK, here's a pretty legitimate question:

Is there room in today's HM for a guitarist to play slide?

Can anyone think of a HM band that uses slide? (I know Blackmore
does, and Page used to, but I'm talking about the newer HM that
    is out today.)

Or is slide still considered mainly a blues instrument?

Micky Moody used to play slide for Whitesnake. He was pretty good
and made effective use of it in a rock band (although Whitesnake
had a blusey side to them).

Apparently Rudolf Shenker plays slide guitar on the "Savage Amusement"
album but I fail to find anything that stands out and grabs me be the
    b****.

121.5Dive bombs and 5th fret harmonics...SAMURI::COOPERBag it, Mr. Boo-Boo!Thu Jun 23 1988 11:588
This is probably a pretty lame trick, but I like it...

Didja ever listen to "Look What The Cat Dragged In" by Poison ?
At the end of the first lead break, the dude grabs an open string
and dive-bombs it. When he "comes back up" with it, he taps a 5th
fret harmonic... Sounds nifty. Easy, and hot_soundin'...

Mick Mars usdes slide a lot these days because he S**** and he
    can't play anything else!

    Re: -1

Kind a cheesy lick there JC. Here's one that sounds better. Dive
bomb a G harmonic at the 12th fret, as you come up place your finger
at the 5th fret and get the next octave G (you need not repick it,
it should still ring with enough attack/gain). Then start to dive
bomb the `new' G and place your finger just after the 1st fret and
get the third octave G harmonic. It cool, like G harmonics flying
    everywhere!

121.7Not me, I'm just a string flogging slob...SAMURI::COOPERBag it, Mr. Boo-Boo!Thu Jun 23 1988 14:3214
That does sound pretty neeto... I'll horse around with it tonight.

    I know it's a cheesy lick, but I'm a cheesy guitarist...
I'm self taught; never took a lesson. I'm also one of those guize
that plays box scales, and knows root and patterns, not notes...

Keep right on showing me some new stuff though, I'll try anything
once, and like Jerry sez, You blow it a few times, then you invent
    a new one !
    jc

PS - Come on guize, put some stuff in here !

Maybe if you blow it enough times, Jerry will say "Yo, Coop, you
Blew it" ...and then you can be a Blew-Cheese guitarist!

RE: Bucks tricks with the cascading dive-bombed harmonics

Man, that sounds trick, can't wait to get home and try it!

I imagine you all have done this one...

Another related trick (admittedly cheezy) is to bend a note with
the left hand, then tap in the octive harmonic with the right.
You get the original tone plus a harmonic that'll follow the bend
as it's returned to pitch. Sounds pretty cool.

Another trick...this one was from a mag. interview with Steve Vai,
which he attributed to Joe Satriani. Take the B string under your
left hand fingernail and pull it off the neck and around the back.
Makes a cool sound as it hits the sucessive frets.

Seems like these are all tricks...Where are the LICKS? I'd also
like to tap out the knowledge of the Berklee grads!

121.13Where ?NINJA::COOPERBag it, Mr. Boo-Boo!Thu Jun 23 1988 18:3316
How about WHERE you play your guitar ?

Do you do Jimi Hendrix stuff behind your head ?

I kinda like playing my axe whilst pointing the neck towards the
audience out in front of me... While it's slightly phallic in nature,
it mends well with banging your head. I like to put my foot up
on the monitor too, and kinda play off to the side whilst bangin'...

Seems like the boize in Cinderella like to throw their axes around
their neck... I don't trust my strap locks that much, and beleive
me, don't try it without STRAP LOCKS !

    Any other ideas ?

Well, I was posing for some promo-shotz and slung my Kramer behind
my back, and the strap let go... You know how Kramer has the pointy
little head-stock ? Well, mine is not glued in place. Needless
to say I was heart broken, and now, even with strap locks, I'm not
sure my C/J will be slung any where... unless I'm holding it.

Don't sob JC...a few Kramer friend alsddo snapped the headstock
off their axes too. Kramer dicked em around getting a replacement
neck so one ended up buying a Performance neck and one got a warmouth.

    some food for thought...

Has anyone ever seen anyone do tapping on a 12-sting? And if
so, what does it sound like? The Byrds meets EVH?!?!?

The new guitar player in our band was showing me how to do this the
other night. Then he tells me about the time he destroyed a BRAND NEW
Kramer Baretta doing this. The strap lock didn't and broke the neck in
    half!

Probably cuz the necks on Kramer Barettas are sh*t!

I know half a dozen guys with Kramer Baretta necks snapped in two, and
    Kramer WON'T replace em!!!!!

Cool trick for acoustic stuff - fret open chords and use your right
hand to slap and pop octave harmonics in the same way a bass player
would. Somewhat more percussive effect than what would be achieved on
a bass and looks cool if you get it going fast enough.

More impressive than playing "Stairway to Heaven" at your local music
    store 8^)
