107.0. "MTV's HeadBangers' Ball" by WILVAX::BOURQUE (Have you hugged your Drums today?) Fri Jun 17 1988 15:52

On the subject of MTV How many enjoy the Head Bangers

Rock Hour they have on the weekends late at night ?

I noticed alot of Good Bands on there that should
be getting more publicity than they are. Can you think
of any Bands that fall in that situation that you like
        to hear more of.....

107.12 hours of METAL !!!RAVEN1::JERRYWHITEOpinion Set HiddenFri Jun 17 1988 16:0912
I think the Headbangers Ball is a 2 hour show. I always put it
on video because you can learn some good licks from watching it.
I have noticed that it's usually better when they have a guest VJ
that's in a metal band rather than one of the "regulars" because
they don't get into metal too much. MTV put it to a vote whether
they played too much HM and all the Belinda Carlysle fans spent
megabucks calling in - so we get ours from 12 - 2 am. That's fine,
as long as we get it. I don't watch MTV much since they had their
little election, Johnny Hates Jazz, Scary Hates Top 40.

The headbangers ball is on for 3hrs. from 12:00 till 3:00
they almost always play the same thing until aruond 2:15
when they start pleying newer bands.

About the no H-M they don't play it often but did you ever notice
that the top ten countdown for the last year or so has been about
7 out of 10 vids.were metal now what is it the people realy want.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. But the Top 10 Countdown never has
any of the hard core metal bands - just the aluminum ones like Poison,
Crue (the new stuff), Whitesnake (the new stuff), and DLR (..opinion
set hidden ..). It's better than nothing though, I'd rather see
Poison than MJ or Whitney Houston.

I tend to like the music that MTV uses when they're going to
or coming from a commercial break. That's headbanging.

I notice that it's really repetative from week to week. So watching
it once every few weeks will let you know what's gonna be on. The
guy with the big white hair and white suit with black leather jacket
cracks me up, "Now I'm not telling you no trash, this is the place
to listen to thrash, hallaleua". Too bad it's not true... Only
thing I've seem on there that's thrash would be a couple of Megadeath
    vids.

What do you call pop thrash?

I know most of the real thrash bands (Anthrax, Metallica) don't
make videos. Would probably just be a waste of $, since most video
    stations wouldn't play them anyway.

The songs going and coming from commercials are by S.O.D. S.O.D. was
discussed in an earlier note. A one-time project by Scott and Charlie
from Anthrax with ex-Anthrax, now Nuclear Assault bassist Dan Lilker.
The vocals were handled by Billy Milano, now singing for M.O.D.

Besides "I'm the Man" and "Indians", Anthrax also has a video for
"Madhouse". I was told MTV won't show it. I saw it before and there's
really nothing bad about it! They have a video cassette also, but it
    hasn't been released yet.

107.15repeat after me...I hate MTV, I hate MTVBROCK::MINARDIWed Jun 29 1988 10:5327
It's taken me a while to reply to this note, but if you read my
intro note, you know what I think about MTV.
    	It sucks.

I've actually been home once or twice when the 'Ball is on, and
I've caught some of it. Of course, instead of seeing some mean
"HEADBANGER" music, what do I see? Lita Ford (whose vid is on
150 times a day), Whitesnake (ditto), DLR (dittoX2), etc. etc.
And a FEW videos by artists you rarely see. A "headbanger" would
probably fall asleep waiting for something to bang his head to.

Face it. MTV bites a**, and basically is a KISS-108 video station.
When is Casey Casem going to have his own MTV show?

They classify headbanging music from anything that's harder
than "Saw Him Standing There" by that little red-head puke.

MTV is nothing but ONE big commercial...fashion...fad...trend...
dance lesson station for the 14-16 year old set.

    	Why can't they do a hard-core cutting-edge controversial
heavy-metal/hardcore show? What the hell, I've got to stay up
late to watch the only show worth watching on the station anyway.
At least then I'd maybe respect them a LITTLE.

You guys have got it good!!!!

we have hardly any metal-TV over here. Our most POPular program
is TOP OF THE POPS and is totally s***. The heaviest thing I've
ever seen on there is the odd Anthrax video and I once saw WASP
live on it. The rest of the time its full of Tiffiny, Pet Shop
    Pratts etc..

There is one quite good programme called No Limits which show only
rock/AOR but doesn't show any thrash/speed. Thats the best we've
    got !!!

    Well...after reading the replys here...

I watch at least part of the HBB most Sat nights. While the title
is probably wrong, the fare is much better than the typical MTV
vids, not to mention that other pansy *^& video station that stays
on the tube about long enough for me to press the 'down channel'
    button on the rmt control.

Not to condone calling it 'headbangers ball', but face it, MTV most
of the time is functionally unwatchable.

Well, I must say that I don't think MTV is so awful it's
unwatchable, but I do think they need more HM and more
    	hard rock.

In an article I read, the Crue said they wouldn't give
MTV any more of their videos because MTV refuses to play
    	them anyways!!

It could be worse, y'know. They could have NO HM or
hard rock at all. They COULD become another VH-1.

    	THAT would be unwatchable....

How can anybody like a station that practices discrimination???
They think that all who listen to HM are constantly doped out.
They had a special on the effects of HM on kids, talk about one
sided and what is all this "the votes are in, no heavy metal and
more popular music" stuff??? When did they have a vote??? I dont
rember it, I never ever heard it mentioned on the show. Mtv is
a yuppie...pop...flashy...phoney station who does what parents want
them to do and not thier viewing audience..

Take my advice, dont waste your time watching it.

re: Femme Fatale

Give me a break! The biggest selling point of this band is the looks of
the singer. And if that is the best part about the band, it doesn't
really say too much for them, huh?

cat

P.S. If I see one more pouting, spandex-wearing, blonde singer in a video,
I'm gonna scream! Why can't they just let the music talk, like it
should! They should take cues from bands like Warlock - the music is
     what's important!

"Heaven Tonight" by Yngwie - OK song, but he runs around

    Yeah! I was amazed.

I liked the attitude N.A. had. Something they said rather impressed
me. It was along the lines of "A lot of new bands come out and they
just want to be extreme and have a lot of Satanic lyrics and junk. It
just give the entire metal genre a bad name".

Since I saw the band on MTV last night, I figured
this would be a good place to put this. The band
is unknown (I think), but I don't know if it shouldn't
    	be, so I can't put it there...and I don't know about
their new releases so I didn't put it there...

Anyways....I was watching MTV last night to pass the
time until Jeopardy came on (^8 and during the Post
Modern show hosted by none other than Ken Ober, there
were two bands that I thought were Metalish.

One was a band in which every member was black. With
the sterotypes that go around, and the way they were
dressed (BTW, I forgot the bands' name), you'd would've
expected rap to emerge from their mouths. The name
of the song was Cult of Personality, and while I didn't
think it was terrific, I thought it was okay and I
commend them on their different approach to HM!

Another band I saw was Bulletboys (??). The lead
singer looked alot like the older DLR, complete with
long, fairly straight hair. The song was Smooth Up
(??)...I didn't think it was all too bad either.

It's been like that for a while...

It still doesn't help. MTV used to be a breaking place for a
lot of really talented bands, but it became a quick way for a good
image to become popular. The metal they play is 'popular' metal,
such as Def Leppard or Poison. I have NEVER seen 'Paradise City'
during 'normal' hours...only on the requests or the HBB. I've seen
Metallica's 'One' that many times exactly, even 'tho these two songs
    are the 'most popular'.
Of course, pop is what MTV is aimed at nowadays. Look at the
commercials, and you get an idea of who watches it.

"One" still isn't all too popular, but ask yourself
this....do you want it to be??

I can see it happening already...the bands like
Metallica and Queensryche were fantastic WITHOUT all
the publicity, now all of the sudden they're popular
and BAMMO, teeny boppers are finding them good, too.
The next stage is the concerts where the teenyboppers
are going to find their popular hunks, then their
music just isn't as entertaining as it used to be.

     Yeah, ain't that the truth...

It seems like most bands I have ever "discovered" and liked
eventually became BIG and then I didn't like them as much...

I don't know if it's the fact that when the band starts getting
frequent exposure it turns me off, or if it's because they tend
to sell out as they get more recognition...

Most bands are true to their musical self when they're just starting
out, but once they "hit it big" then they get pressure from the
record company and maybe feel like they have more to lose...

I suppose it's catch-22, when you "discover" a band then you want
to see more of them, after which you see too much of them, or they
become too much rock_formula for your tastes...

Of course there are exceptions, and these are the bands that always
last and of which you always remain a fan...

    bullsh*t.

    MTV recognizes top 40.
For weeks they made the biggest deal out of Metallica's
video release. The video's out... I've been watching MTV as much
as possible ever since, and I haven't seen the video ONCE!!!
But I'll see 4 f**king Def Leppard (whom I HATE) videos, Tone
Loc twice, Bobby Brown 3 times, and Paula Abdul and Karen White
twice each... NO METALLICA!!! Yeah, it's a big deal... so where's
the video already. I knew it was going to happen.

I think now that the only reason that MTV even mentioned Metallica's
vid was that they were slated to be in Rolling Stone magazine.

Jeeeezus, I see more BEATLES videos on MTV than Metallica (no lie).

I recall in the old days disliking Kiss because they were a rock band
    for teeny-s. Things don't change.

MTV is brainwashing people into liking maybe 1% of the available music
in the world. They do this to increase the profits of specific
businesses at the expense of others. They are a manipulative industry
who regard music as nothing more than a way to generate capitol and
excersize control of the behavior of people.
Where there is MTV free will is squashed.

While all the flaming and "I'm sorrying" is going on nobody stopped to
remember that BonJovi's music isn't/wasn't that bad. His last album kinda
stunk, but 7800 rocked. Same with Def Leppards last effort, while it was okay,
it gives up nothing to Pyromainia.

You folks gotta understand that these people are in BUSINESS. They have bosses
too, and they tell them the kind of stuff that sells...And what they want
on albums. The bands that get away with putting what THEY want on their
LP's are selling an "I don't give a f**k" attitude anyway...

And since when is Kiss a mens band ? Kiss is about as much MENS MUSIC
as The Partridge Family, The Osmonds and The Jackson 5 ! Do you
think they were trying to attract MEN with all the make up and cheesy
music ?

Just My Humble Opinion, but I think not.

I would like to discuss something musically instead of the
	fighting going on in 99.*

So....I have noticed over the past 2 or three weeks that
Heavy Metal (Most of my info from what is played on
HBB) is heading towards a Rap/Metal.. Well my opinion
is that I don't like it. The groups such as Primus
(semi-rap) and Hard Corps (real rap) and another group
are getting a lot of play on HBB. I like Heavy music
when the lead singer sings (What a shock eh?) I still
like the heavy guitars and melody, but singing is what
makes it. Do you think because of stuff like Anthrax/P.E.
and Aerosmith/Run DMC is going to send Metal towards Rap?
I hope that it doesn't or I will stick with listen to old
tapes, and not the new stuff.

It is my Opinion that Rap of any kind including Rap/Metal
sucks... Groups like Hard Corps don't deserve to be played
	on HBB in my opinion......

I know Tigga I am not the only person listening to HBB, but
those are my opinions. (See you taught me well, I did learn
that there are other people besides me..) 8)

107.179Lots of blending going onGOES11::G_HOUSETommy The CatTue Nov 19 1991 18:2613
I think this has been discussed before, but I'll add my opinion. I
don't care for rap very much, it turns me off.

    I think that what you're seeing is a natural progression. There's a
big blending of musical forms going on and metal is getting mixed with
other things like funk, R&B, blues, to form new forms of music.
Everyone's interested in finding a unique sound and a lot of bands are
    doing it this way.

Also, FWIW, I would *not* call Primus rap in any form, it's nothing
    like rap to me!

What I think Mr. Howes (might) be saying is that the sound of Heavy
Metal isn't really that 'heavy' if you can say that anymore. A lot
of bands are using minimal distortion, and funky rythms are being added
instead of more crunchy riffs. As with Primus (sorry gh, I know ya
love'em) they are really a music category unto their own. They do get
placed with Metal, when they should really be in another. Which I don't
    know probably their own.

I dunno... I guess I like 'heavy metal' not really other
mutations, and I don't care for alternative stuff very much
at all. These are just my opinions. *I* do not call Primus
heavy metal I call them Alternative/Semi-rap (That is what
*I* call them). 'Pril I am glad you like Hard Corps I am not
making fun of them *I* just think they suck. I like a group
with a lead *SINGER*. That is all. Gh the songs I have heard
from Primus the guy is mostly talking, is that not rap? Yes
it does have a 'funky' background, but I call what I have heard
a form of rap. I am sorry if this was discussed before, I did not
know. I will just stick with my group, and change the channel
when Hard Corps or Primus comes on. As I said in the 'Hot' topic
I find *most* of Nirvana a bit too alternative for my liking.
Some of the songs like SLTS are cool but the others are too
	alternative....

Hey Seth, Like I was just saying, there's no need to apologize for your
opinions. There was a time when I woudln't have liked music like
Primus and Nirvana too, but I like them right now. I'm not interested
in trying to change anyone else's opinions of them...

> Gh the songs I have heard from Primus the guy is mostly talking, is
> that not rap?

I don't think it is. There have always been songs where people did a
voice over monologue type approach, but they weren't really called rap.
I think of rap as having a very strong rhythm to the vocal line with a
heavy emphasis in the lyrics on having the last lines always rhyme. A
song like "Tommy The Cat" for example, while it isn't exactly sung (per
se), doesn't have the "rap style" vocal inflections, rhythm, and rhyme.
    That's why I don't call it rap.

    gh

You know what I think is knida funny? I am not just saying this
about people in *this* conference, but about people I have discussed
this with in general. It *seems* as though people classify what
they don't like in HM (talking that is) as rap and stuff they do
like is talk, and it goes with the music. I am not making fun of
people beacuse I probably do the same thing. I am sure that if I
liked Primus I wouldn't relate them to rap at all. Well this is
just something I have noticed, maybe it is true maybe it is not..

Interesting anyway.....
