98.0. "Fly-by-night moonlighter bands [One-hit wonders]" by MILVAX::SOUZA () Thu Jun 09 1988 14:46

This note is about all the"one-timer" bands that made a hit and died
or for the "big-timers" that took time out of their "big-timer"
band to do a little moonlighting...

What were the names of these bands? What was the name of the song
    (s) they did? Are any of them in "Big-time" bands today???

    Get the picture??

98.1Annihilation Absolute...Cities.????MILVAX::SOUZAThu Jun 09 1988 14:5115
Once again, I'll start my own reply...

I was just listening to a band called Cities...I think they only
did one album and I know the drummer was A.J. Pero [of Twisted].
I wish they had continued on, some of the guitar solos in there
are great!! Anybody ever heard em'??

Another one is ICON, I used to have an album by them also, but it
was subjected to too many parties, got lost in all the action..

Trooper - "Raise a Little Hell"
Axe - "Rock and Roll Party (in the streets)"
    Shooting Star - "Last Chance"
Touch - "Don't You Know What Love Is"
707 - "I Could Be Good For You"

    I'll think of more soon...

Rough Trade has two good songs: "All Toucha" and " High School
Confidential" I don't know if I'd consider them HM but I do Know
that I haven't heard anything from them since I was a sophmore in
    High school in 1983.

    Re: .1

I too, have hoid of Cities. AJ had been helping them out while he was
still in TS. He said in an interview on WERS that he was tired of being
told what to play, so he left and it was natural for him to jump right
in with his other friends. His drum work with Cities was definitely very
much different than his work in TS.

98.5Let's check the WAY-BACK machine.MRMFG1::C_DENOPOULOSThu Jun 09 1988 16:0914
A group that comes to mind regarding this subject is ZEBRA. As
far as I know they only released one album with the song "Who's
behind the door" on it. They weren't really HM but they were nice
to listen to for a change of pace.

Anyone know whatever happened to the Lowell/Boston band called
ILLUSION? They put out 2 or 3 albums a long time ago and then
    vanished.

I heard Mark Farner is making a come-back. Anyone know if he'll
be using new material or will he be sticking to the old GFR stuff.
    GFR= Grand Funk Railroad.

You mentioned ICON, well if it's the same guys out of Phoenix,
AZ., they used to be called The School Boys, then got lucky
and made a deal that changed their name. But, I haven't heard
of anything lately or anything on what they're doing.

Another one from the sun city is a band called Surgical Steel
they came out with one album that Rob Halford (sp?) from Judas
    	Priest helped them with.

Actually, Zebra had three albums out. I like the second one the
best. It hd "Bears", "Wait Until the Summer's Gone", and "Lullaby",
which was a beautiful ballad in tribute to John Lennon. I also saw
them open for somebody at the Centrum, but don't remember who.
    Good band, though!

There was a band a while back...I'm pretty sure it was ILLUSION.
They had something go on with a "big-wigg's" daughter and the "BW"
told them they'd never play in Boston again. Maybe their somewhere
    out in NY??

    re: .6

I remember the School Boys & Surgical Steel from Phx. Both good bands.
I heard that Rob Halford would show up at their shows sometimes and
sometimes sing with them. Also heard that he and the singer from SS
were a little more than friends...

Surgical Steel had a spot in a movie I saw recently (which I can't
remember the name of). It was about a guy who played guitar that
joined a band that partied a bit too much, his buddy the keyboard
player ODd (died). It was on cable within the last 3-4 months. Anyone
    remember the name.

yes, that's what I was insinuating. Trying to phrase that in more
polite terms, since I didn't know either of them personally and
therefore couldn't say with complete certainty that that was the
case. Didn't want to be slanderous, just a rumor, but one that
I'd heard several times (about Halford).

I second the vote on Icon - their biggie was 'On Your Feet'.

This is one of my favorites ... but where'd they go??

And Axe - 'R&R Party' is a GREAT song!!

About Zebra ... I love 'Tell Me What You Want' off of the same
album as "Who's Behind the Door" (No Tellin' Lies?).

I have to put in my vote for Icon. Incredibly
talanted band. I have both of their albums, and
they have to be two of my favorites. From what I
heard, for some reason or another, their singer
went born-again christian and quit the band, they
lost their contract, got a new singer, and are
trying to get another one. A case of the wrong
place at the wrong time. If they had been
promoted, I bet they would have been *HUGE*.

707 is another one. Reminds me of Journey a
great deal (Megaforce was their big hit). I have
that tape too, it's a bit harder to find than
                Icon.

One of the guys from 707 is playing with Frehley
                now, I believe (although I find that I like 707 a
                great deal more than Frehley).

Zebra is still around. I've seen them 3 times in
the past year at the Living Room (in Providence,
RI). Last time was in January I believe. Now
that I think about it, if it's not there already,
this is another one to put down under three man
                bands.

Then you have Steeler with Yngwie and Ron Keel.
                Speaking of Keel, there's another one . . .

I used to be a big fan of Icon's. My friend and I went to see them
at the Paradise when they were in Boston. After the show, we were
waiting for the "T" (on our way to see Night Ranger at the Orph
the same night) and they came out and asked us to show them the
way. We all went to Papa Gino's together and went to the show.
Nice bunch of guys, too, not just trying to get l*&d.

Incidentally, that same friend knows the guys in Rough Cutt pretty
well. I'll have her give them a call and see what they are doing.
Last I heard they were "carrying on" even though Paul Shortino joined
Quiet Riot. Pretty lame. Not that they weren't to begin with...

How about King Kobra? They had that one killer album (I still find
myself poppin' it into the old deck at least once a week) and now
they're lame, too. I hear they have something new coming out soon,
    too.

Don't know about Keel anymore. Mark Ferrari (Ha ha! All of his
friends from Boston still know him as "Shoe.") quit, I think.

I just read an interview with the guitarist from accept in an old

that none of the band were gay and that the reason for the rumour
was due to the lyrics of 'Balls to the Wall' and 'London Leather

Speaking of fly-by-night bands - does anyone remember a band called
touch (or Touche) that had a hit in the late 70's with a song called
"Don't You Know What Love Is"? Whatever happened to them?

I have tried for years to find their album wtihout success (it was on
Elektra/Asylum Records). The only thing I have found is the Castle
Donnington album that year, which has that one hit song on it (it
also has Rainbow, Scorpions, April Wine and Saxon). Does anyone
have this album?

        I've got the "Touch" album.

I bought it when I heard 'Don't You Know What Love Is?'. That
song is by far, IMO, the best thing on the album. The rest of the
material isn't too heavy. 'Black Star' (?) is probably the second
best cut on the album. I haven't listened to it in ages.

Solid vocals and good musicianship but they sound alot like
City Boy and Alexis (late 70's one shot band).
