64.0. "Def Leppard" by USADEC::BJUBINVILLE () Wed May 25 1988 04:19

This note will be dedicated to one of the best band around at this
    present time...... D E F L E P P A R D

Lead vocals---- Joe Elliott (aka. King Kreosote)

Guitars-------- Steve Clark (aka. Wing Commander)

Guitars-------- Phil Collen (aka. Air Commodore)

Bass----------- Rick Savage (aka. Baron Beaverbrook)

Drums---------- Rick Allen (aka. O.B. Oblivian)

        Their four albums:
                          On Through The Night
                          High n' Dry
                          Pyromania
                          Hysteria

This group in my opinion has come a long way. They put some
serious OT to make their latest album, Hysteria, their best all
time album. They have a book on their accomplishments called Animal
Instinct. To order it, send 14.45 to the USA branch bookstore at:

I like "commin' under fire" from Pyromania. Good track
I wasn't too keen on Hysteria coz I thought it didn't live up to
the previous Lep albums, but as the guys had problems they are excused
    :-)

I like "Love Bites" from Hysteria, good ballard.

My fav DF song has got to be "Billy's Got A Gun" from Pryromania.
I don't see how anyone can sit still when that one's on. My least
fav is "Hysteria" nd I think the 2EZ boize know why..........

I must confess that I have only just started listening to Heavy
Metal and all these AWESOME bands!! I don't know why it took
me so long to find this music but I guess it's better late than
    never.

The only album of Def's that I have (right now) is Hysteria and
I think it is GREAT!!! Although the whole album is AWESOME I
must say that some of my most favorite songs on the album would
have to be Love Bites (it's true isn't it?) and Pour Some Sugar
    on Me.

I can't wait -- July 30 at Great Woods - Def Leppard with Europe!!!

        RE: Kim

Def Leppard is going through their 'wimping out' stage
right now. They're trying to play for the teenage girls
(who buy more records than most of the other groups) rat-
            her than satisfy us Metalheads.

I disagree with Pete, though - I love Pyromania. Almost
(if not every) song is fantastic (my favorite? Coming
Under Fire). I haven't heard much from the first two
albums, so can't make any observations. On the contrary,
I've heard TOO MUCH from Hysteria (2 or 3 songs) and have
            made my judgment known OFTEN.

Rush never really was HM, but had 'hints' of HM in some
of their songs. Besides a few exceptions, they are real-
ly a medium-hard rock band, which is of course a matter
            of opinion.

If anyone wants to continue this, please start another
topic (or add on to another one already in progress).

Also in line with the current consensus in this note, I thought
that 'High & Dry' was their best. I liked Pyromania too. Hysteria

Also a note of great success with this band. Like Buck said,
these guys were in wicked debt before Hysteria. Their efforts
for this album has propelled them in the metal standings as a
band who can pull their own weight. The monetary value of this band
has well exceeded what the promoters had ever hoped. My metal loyalty
goes out to Rick Allen. For someone to come back from a car crash
with one arm and not give up, practice his brains out with a
new set of bangs to a top level drummer is one of the greatest
comebacks in metal today. I'll just say, Thank you Rick Allen
    for not quitting on us.

Of course these notes are for people to reply with their own
opinions. I personally hate when people knock me(us) Lep fan's
    down.

I like all of Def Lep's LP's. Afew songs I like are Pour
Some Sugar On Me, Let It GO and Rock of Ages. I would like to agree
with the comment of Rick Allen. I still have all the paper clippings
and interviews of Rick's accident. The main reason they were in
such debt was because of Rick. They were working on the new album
when this happened. Since Rick decided not to quit and everyone
else decided to keep him, they reviewed all of their work while
Rick recovered and adjusted. They made major changes on the songs
of the Hysteria album. Some songs such as "Rocket" is too long.
All of the talk of Reagan is Bullsh*t. I don't feal proud flying
down Rt. 9 with this song cranked on my Blap. speakers.

High and Dry is the real Leppard. Pyromania was a bit more commercial
and Hysteria (I do like a couple of songs) is definitely geared
to bubble-gum chewing teeny-bopper metalheads. Not us veterans of
the heavy metal trenches. Ditto on Europe.

Def Leppard is now officially my current favorite band.
After falling madly in love with practically everything
on Hysteria (most notably Excitable and Pour Some Sugar
On Me), I rushed out and purchased every other tape they've
made. So far I have only had a chance to listen to
Pyromania all the way through, but (in my opinion) it
is just as good as Hysteria, with just as many killer
    	tunes.

One thing I particularly like about Def Leppard is that
(unlike most bands) each album is chock full of great music.
Most bands give you one or two good songs with about 8 to 10
filler tunes that rightfully belong in the trash pile. Even
the so-so tunes on the Def Leppard albums are better than
    	most bands 'good stuff'.

Call me a Def Leppard fan for life... as far as I'm concerned
they are the best of contemporary pop-metal.

I have to agree! "High and Dry" is my favorite too, followed closely
by "Pyromania". I saw them open for Ted Nugent right after H&D
came out and they kicked butt. I'd like to see them again now.
Not so sure I wanna fight my way through the teenie boppers for
    it though...

Scary is correct...that instrumental after Bringing on the Heartache is
cool (what is that thing called, something with a number in it)! Also
if you have the newer version of H&D, there are two different mixes of
BringinOTH on there, a nice extra.

Always the same problems with HM Maniacs...

Each time one of their favorite bands come out with a great
album, people (like me and you most of the time) buy it. Then
it got to a TOP-whatever and then they renounce to it.

HM fans are jealous people...they don't want HM bands to have success.
They don't want any not-HM fans to like the same band as they do.

Scorpions,Europe, or Def got money from singles bought by wimps...

    Yes but don't confuse !
HM fan is the one that knows the whole LP, the previous ones
any details on the band' members and goes to the concert.

    So what ? Don't worry about TOP-XX

Successful HM bands are still HM bands !

Well, let me tell you, the show was AWESOME!!

Europe, of course, was on first. They played from 7:30 - 8:15.
Being the Europe fan that I am I thought they were good. The only
thing I don't like about them is the way the announce the song they
are going to sing before they start singing it - very aggravating!!

Def didn't come on until 9:00. Everyone was getting real restless
waiting for them. They put their Hysteria banner up on stage and
when they came out to play the fun began! The played a lot of their
'old' songs like: Too Late, Stage Right (?), Rock of Ages, Photograph,
and Heartbreak. From the new album they played: Women, Hysteria,
Animal, Pour Some Sugar on Me, and Love Bites.

They also had an incredible laser show. The lighting on the stage
was great - the whole thing was outrageous!!

At one point Joe was talking to us while everyone else from the
band was backstage and he started saying that it had been a long
time since they came out with an album and he was asking/telling
us why that was so. Of course, now Rick Allen is out on stage and
he went over to him and had him stand up and he got the longest
and loudest standing ovation I have ever heard!!!

This being the first time I have seen Def in concert - I will never
forget it. Joe has a stage presence that is totally phenomenal!
He really knows how to keep the audience into it.

The Hello America video was taken from a recording they did for
our Top of the Pops programme. It was never shown as it was recorded
in advance in case the single went anywhere. Sadly it didnt, so
    the footage was shelved.
The American version of Pour some sugar on me was filmed live,
I dont know the name of the venue, but it was where the stage was
in the middle and the audience was all around it. Also there was
one other song recorded there, Im not sure but it may have been
Armageddon (sp?) it. This was screened in Britain, possibly US as
    well.
Rumours were put about (in the video itself) that the rest of
the show was recorded and will be released later this year (around
Christmas) in Britain, look out for it.

Anyway, its my home time, See Ya - Brynn.

know why they changed their name from DEAF
LEOPARD to DEF LEPPARD? When I saw them years
back, all their tour equipment had the former
                stenciled on it.

An extract from the Def Leppard book - Animal Instinct :

After a few weeks, there was some grumbling about the spelling of
deaf leopard. It was the high season for punk-rock in England and
bans like the flying lizards and the boomtown rats (featuring future
live aid impressario Bob Geldof) were all the rage. Deaf Leopard
were keen to get out and play, but not to pack pasty-faced,
spikey-topped chainsaw carrying troublemakers. Joe says it was Tony
Kenning's (first drummer) idea to change the spelling of the name.
Tony cant remember. Everrybody insists that the resemblance of the
new spelling - Def Leppard - to Led Zeppelin was strictly
unintentional. Whatever, it sounded good, looked good, and eventually
even Pete Willis, who thought the whole idea was "daft", came to
    like it.

This all happened in late 1977, so what you probably saw stencilled
on their tour equipment was their idea of taking the piss out of
themselves, a little parody. They have done it in a couple of their
early videos also, written on the front of the bass drum etc.

I respect your opinion in not liking them too much, although
I still think they are FAB. (and kick Ass - for all the Americans
    out there)

    Anyway See Ya - Brynn.

Queensryche had the BEST sound of any opening act I've ever heard!
They sounded JUST like the record, and that's no lie.

    Their set was the following:

    Queen of the Reich
    Anarchy X
    Revolution Calling
    Operation Mindcrime
    Speak
    Spreading the Disease
    Take Hold of the Flame
    Breaking the Silence
    I Don't Believe in Love
    Eyes of a Stranger
    Anarchy X Reprise

They were great, I'd sem em again in a sec. Def lep was ok, They
were too loud, and Steve Clark's "guitar solo(?)" gave me a headache.
They were fun to watch, but Joe's voice was kinda shot.

The British version has been out for a couple of weeks now. The
video was the band in a darkened studio, surrounded by boxes and
dozens of monitors. The monitors displaying key words throughout
the song, and also pieces of VT to fit in with the lyrics. Bit's
include, the sweet, T-Rex, Queen, Elton John (Rocket Man ?) David
    Bowie.

On the B side to the single, they certainly did something new and
original. This is the story :

Apparently one of their roadies was a *BIG* Tom Jones fan, and went
around all the time, singing his songs, particularly Please Release
Me. So they surrupticiously got him in front of a mike, and let
him sing it. They (unbeknown to him) recorded it, added some backing
music and placed it on the B side of their Rocket single.

This is what happened in the UK, it will be interesting to find
out what you've got in the states.

Lately I've been hearing a lot of the re-mix of "Pour Some Sugar On Me". Is
this a re-release? Or is it from somewhere else? Or what?

For those who haven't heard it, its sorta like your basic remix (rearrange the
song, repeat lots of sections, drop off the vocals, etc.). Its not so bad, as
it tends to bring the guitars to the forefront of the music.

Meanwhile, they [Def Lepp] laugh all the way to the bank...

I think they spent more than 70 weeks on the Rolling Stone top 50
    albums list.

Why does everybody think they're so bad? I'm no expert, but I
think they have a pretty decent sound, are well-produced, write
some good tunes. Is everybody raggin' on 'em 'cuz they're kinda
glam metal?? Or, are they really terrible musicians/singers/etc.??

I give the drummer a lot of credit. I have had three friends who
have lost arms/hands/etc. and I take my hats off to their efforts
to continue to draw (two of them were excellent artists) and, in
    one case, play guitar.

I agree with Joe, Def Leppard, whilst not really my cup ot tea,
    aren't that bad.

The guitar players are both good, (anybody who says otherwise
obviously has no knowledge of such things).

The drummer has had to overcome a severe tragidy in order to continue
his carear as a drummer (he's done damn well too).

As for Joe Elliott and Rick Savage (vocals and bass respectivly),
    they are both decent musicians.

It makes me sick to see all "one arm bandit" jokes. How would uou
people like it if you lost and limb and had to try and continue
your carear - especially in something as demanding as the music
    business ??

Keep in mind that, IMO, utilizing those machines to create a good sound and a

everyone can use technology to produce good music, and I would never berate a

It's not as heavy as High 'n' Dry, but it sounds more raw than their
newer stuff. Kinda lies between High n Dry, and Pyromania. I don't
know if it was recorded at the same time as the Hysteria stuff,
but it is VERY different (mostly in production) than the material
    on Hysteria. IMHO of course.

I don't think it's off of "First Strike" cause it didn't sound

a lot like Pyro or Hysteria. If I'm not mistaken, in the juke box,
it was the B side to "Animal".

"Hero" starts out slow with just accoutic guitar with a lot of

LONDON (UPI) -- Steve Clark, guitarist for the heavy metal rock group
Def Leppard, was found dead in his London apartment Tuesday, Scotland
Yard said.
A spokesman for the British police agency said cause of Clark's death
was being investigated but added there were no suspicious circumstances.
Clark's body was discovered about 9 a.m. lying on the floor of the
living room of his apartment in the Chelsea district of London, the
Scotland Yard spokesman said. A post mortem was scheduled for Wednesday,
he said.
In New York City, Cliff Burnstein, one of Clark's managers, said he
had just gotten word of the 30-year-old musician's death.
``The cause of his death is still unknown,'' Burnstein said.
He said the group had been recording in Dublin, Ireland, and was
taking a break in London, Burnstein said.
Clark was one of the founding members of the band which was formed in
1978.

about the tought time they had with recovering from the loss of Clark
but they thing the album should be done by Christmas. Joe pointed
out that a new guitarist will be sought for the tour but he doesn't
want to be interviewing and all that crap. He wants to grab some
with a good reputation and doesn't need audition... Sykes?????

John Sykes and Def Lepard! You must be joking.

I read an interview with the Leps's in Kerrang the other week
and they laughed at the idea.

The latest eedition of Metal Hammer (nov 1991) includes an official denial
from the band that John Sykes has been working with the band. The statement
goes on to say that Phil Collen has taken responsibility for both guitar
parts in completing the new album.

Apparently a decision on the replacement guitartist has yet to be made.
MH reckon that the decision is not necessary until they enter rehearsals
prior to any tour.

later and I changed stations and there it was again. I sure hope this
isn't indicative of how much airplay this piece of crap is getting,
because if it is, then it proves that radio playlists are affected by
nothing more the record company dollars, because there's no way any

Rolling Stone gave it **** out of *****. That translates to excellent. ***** is
classic. I had to read the review to see if they mentioned Let's get Rocked.
They said was it was derivative of Pour Some Sugar on Me. They liked the
lyrics and stated they were thought provoking??? I almost fell off my chair!!!

Maybe Let's Get Rocked isn't typical of the rest. It definitely sounds like a
holdout from Hysteria. I happen to like Hysteria (most of it anyway), so I will
have to see if maybe I was too quick to pass judgement. I don't think I will
be able to like Let's Get Rocked though...

    >Def Leppard release.

What I think you're failing to see, Friz, is that Def Leppard have
crossed-over as a band! They are not pretending to be the AC/DCish
band they once were on their On Thru The Night/High & Dry releases.
Matt Lange has slowly been modifying this groups sound for a wider
audience appeal. The release of Pyromania in 1983 marked their
cross-over to from the hard-rock genre to mainstream power pop. Today
(9 years after the release of Pyro), I wouldn't not call them HM or
even hard rock. They are polished power pop at best. Sort of like
Hall and Oates with a heavier guitar sound. This super-polished
high-tech sound is geared towards a mass audience appeal, and it works.
Def Lep's audience grew tremendously with the release of Hysteria (on
the basis of sappy pop songs like Pour Some Sugar.. and Love Bites).
This new release is designed to pull in even more fans from across the
listening spectrum (my guess is a somewhat older crowd...like those
that listen to Mariah Carey or Garth Brooks).

So, look at it from that standpoint...the sound is naturally evolving
with their marketing strategy. Had they not given a crap about
marketing, or gaining a wider audience, they'd probably still sound
like the High and Dry lp (but would also probably still be playing
opening slots on someone else's major tour!!). This is nothing
new...other "former" hard-rock/HM bands are following suit in this
trend, like Van Halen, Aerosmith, Motley Crue, and even Metallica.
Sure, Motley and Metallica have a long way to go before their albums
sound like Hysteria, but they are on their way...it obvious...

I agree with past remarks - the music is decent (although pretty reminicient
of earlier hits), the lyrics totally lame, the production very cool, and
th video is way cool also.

BTW, I believe the band co-produced the album this time around, which they
said was a very big step for them (sounds like they actually did help produce
it, rather than just saying that).

I'm with Jim, I like the video, but hate the song.

I have to disagree with you on this one, Buck. I understand your
explanation about the slick production, but I think this one is just
too slick. They don't sound like a rock & roll band anymore. This is
the kind of production I'd expect from someone like Dave Stewart, not
Mutt Lange! I mean, come on, Richard Marx has a rougher sound then Def
Leppard do on this song. I think it's way too slick and polished,
regardless of their target market. I think it loses it's intensity and
just sounds boring because of it.

Plus, even though the mix is good, I think it's too busy. There are
too many little sound effects whacked in there here and there and a lot
more layers then I like to hear. I'd rather hear a band then a
production and it sounds to me like the band is pushed into the
background by all the production on this one.

I guess if my songs were that lame, I'd try and find SOMETHING to
compensate for it. Production compensates for poor songwriting, right?

    Record Review

    ADRENALIZE - Def Leppard * * * *

Generally speaking, it's time to worry when the term *long-awaited*
gets appended to an album. *Long-awaited* doesn't just mean that he
band in question took its sweet time delivering the disc; usually, it's
industry code for "bloated and overblown."

Except, that is, when the long-awaited release in question is the work
of Def Leppard. This, remember, is the only major rock act that works
more slowly than Bruce Springsteen. In fairness, the band's tardiness
isn't entirely the product of foot dragging, as the death of guitarist
Steve Clark undoubtedly slowed this album (and doubled fellow guitarist
Phil Collen's workload) even more than the loss of drummer Rick Allen's
arm complicated the completion of *Hysteria*.

Yet regardless of the time spent in the studio, Def Leppard's albums
never seem especially labored or overwrought. If anything, the
opposite is true - the band's music seems so effortlessly accessible
that most listeners probably don't even notice the incredible amount of
craft that goes into each release.

Nor is *Adrenalize*, with its insistence on intensely tuneful,
unrepentantly frivolous material, likely to change that. There's no
overriding concept to the album, no sense of the group's confronting
its demons or wrestling with the problems of the world; instead, what
we get is a seemingly unending string of energetic, hook-heavy,
gosh-we-luv-'em songs about girls. A perfect Def Leppard album, in
    other worlds.

That's not meant sarcastically, either. Because truth be told, it's
far easier to prop up several couplets of self-revelation with a few
heavy-metal riffs that it is to turn an idea as commonplace as romantic
desire into asong as memorable as "Have You Ever Needed Someone So
Bad". But that's what Def Leppard does best, and *Adrenalize* is the
band's most consistent effort to date. Take "Have You Ever Needed
Someone So Bad" as an example. Although the title p/retty much sums up
the idea behind the tune, the band is wise enough to recognize that
when it comes to love songs, *what* gets said matters for less than
*hwo* it gets said. Thus, the heart of the song is its melodic
development, the way Joe Elliott's vocal builds from the breathy,
low-key opening verse to the soaring, full-throated harmonies of the
chorus. It's so perfectly paced that you hardly need to hear the
lyrics to understand what the song is saying; the sound says it all.

That's typical of Def Leppard, though. From the first, this was a band
that gloried in the power of heavy metal's musical gestures - the
towering majesty of power riff, the momentary freedom of guitar break,
the exhilaration of a singer's scream - and as the group has grown, its
ability to manipulate that vocabulary has expanded to the point that
its songs have become mini-masterpieces of aural impact.

Just listen to all the sonic detail crammed into the album-opening
"Let's Get Rocked." Although rhythmically the song is an obvious
descendant of "Pour Some Sugar on Me", playing off a throbbing Rick
Savage bass line, stylistically it's miles beyond the last album, full
of puns ("Let's get the rock out of here"), special effects (when
Elliott complains about his girlfriend's fondness for classical music,
the band mockingly answers with a snippet of Beethoven's Fifth) and all
sorts of stagy good humor. Yet the Leps work these gimmicks in so
gracefully that they never interrupt the music's flow, acting not as
unnecessary contrivances but simply as another level of hook.

And there are hooks of every sort on *Adrenalize*, from broad strokes
like the gloriously harmonized chorus of "Heaven Is" to ear-catching
details like the little yodel Elliott slips into "Personal Property".
(Adrenalize* is so relentlessly catchy that it almost seems as if the
band is about to abondon its heavy-metal roots for the greaner fields
of hard pop. That's not to say the album is any softer than its
predecessors - certainly the crunchy guitars of "Tear it Down" or "Make
Love Like a Man" are proof to the contrary - just that it's not as
    noisily aggressive.

Consider that a sign of maturity. After all, what made *Hysteria* and
*Pyromania* worth returning to wasn't their fist-pumping energy but the
unabashed tunefulness the band tied to that sheer force. *Adrenalize*
simply makes that connection more explicit, proving in the process that
Def Leppard is one of the catchiest bands in rock. And if that doesn't
make *Adrenalize* worth waiting for, I don't know what would.

I respect the band a lot but that doesn't mean they can't be more
creative in there music. I don't think the ability of the drummer has
anything to do with it. He is a great drummer (with one arm). As far as
electronic drums. They have drum machine sounds that sound like the
real thing. Also, the drummer has never been a flashy type drummer. He
has always been a groove drummer. They could still get away from the
bubble gum music if they wanted to. Mutt Lange is leading them to
bubble gum stardom just like he is with Bryan Adams. Who knows what
might happen in the near future though. There new guitarist has a
mighty reputation as far as that old raw sound...YEAH!!

As much as some people want it to happen....It won't.
Viv C. isn't going to change the band what so ever. I have a feeling
that if he does he'll get the big axe.
Mutt lange is a VERY big part of this band and from what I've seen he
    calls the shots.
I also saw an interview with Joe E. and Viv C. on Mtv and Viv said it
was a 'natural' progression to be playing this kind of music and he
didn't want to play anymore (Placing the thumb to the two bent middle
fingers and acting like Ronnie James Dio) "Heavy Metal".

I like the album except for "Let's get Rocked" and the album is
doing good in Billboard too. 8)

I don't want this to be taken the wrong way. I have Hysteria and like it a
lot.

I think that DL is kind of low on the talent side. The segments I've heard
them do live are usually kind of, hmmm, lacking. I read in Rolling Stone
where they've admitted the same sort of thing.

They were auditioning Viv Campbell and had trouble finding a song they all
knew because they don't improvise too well (if at all!).

I think they've found their niche. A studio band that manages somehow to
get a take right and a producer who knows how to package them.

I agree Friz, other than LGR, the rest of the album is good enough to do well
and they'll sell zillions of em.

Anybody catch last nights concert in their hometown of Sheffield.

It was awesome as usual for them.

Didn't think much of the support though.

The concert was filmed for TV and recorded for Radio 1 (to be aired soon).
Also they have a new album out in October (surprised most people there) which
will contain some new stuff and some old stuff from the past albums.

Anyone else there?

Heard a blurb on the radio yesterday with Vivian Campbell.
Said that most of the stuff on "Adrenalize" is music that's
been written over the past 8-10 years. Some B side music
    	from European releases and such....

Da lepps have a new album released this week called RETRO-ACTIVE.
It contains material either released as B-sides to Hysteria singles,
unreleased material and a couple of cover songs. The material is IMO
excellent, I can't stop playing it.

The track listing is as follows :-

    		Desert Song
    		Fractured Love
    		Action
    		Two Steps Behind (Acoustic version)
    		She's Too Tough
Miss You In A Heartbeat (Acoustic version)
    		Only After Dark
    		Ride Into The Sun
    		From The Inside
    		Ring Of Fire
    		I Wanna Be Your Hero
    		Two Steps Behind (Electric version)
Miss You In A Heartbeat (Electric version)

My favs are "Desert Song", "She's Too Tough" and "I Wanna Be Your Hero"
although they are all well produced. Pity the original version of
"Tear It Down" wasn't included as I much preferred it to the
    	Adrenalise version.

Not that I think the lepps have a great drummer or anything, but
someone here said "Why? Cuz he can keep a beat?"

Without rat-holing I should say that MOST drummers I know can't keep
a beat... Clients come into my studio and spend the majority of their
dough waiting for the drummer to learn to settle into a consistent
    beat.

Wanna freak out a drummer? Make him play to a click; most can't unless
    they practice with a metronome.

My point is, a solid drummer with good metre is worth ten drummers with
    flash...

If you want something that makes the music live and breathe
and stirs up all the emotions in your gut and makes you want
to dance around naked then get a good drummer.

Being able to play along with a metronome or click track for any
longer than 30 seconds is a pointless exercise in my opinion.
Click tracks are easier to play along with since they're usually
fed into your head through headphones so you can crank it up to
hear the click over the drums. But playing drums along with a
metronome is pretty hard to do and stay in sync for longer than
a minute. Drummers do not have a 60 Hz oscillator built inside them.
They're not going to be perfect. So long as they can keep control of
the tempo and not let the bassist or guitarists speed it up or slow it
down then that's all they have to worry about as for tempo.
When we recorded we laid down the drum tracks first. We then built
a click track from the drum track rather than the other way around.

Some drummers are just so boring they may as well left the click
track on the music instead of the drums. There has to be some
feeling there too rather than just time keeping IMO.

Shane, who is very hungry right now...I think I'll head to Taco Hell ;)

64.472A topic near and dear to my heartDREGS::BLICKSTEINThe moment is a masterpieceWed May 01 1996 16:4960
> Being able to play along with a metronome or click track for any
> longer than 30 seconds is a pointless exercise in my opinion.

    Spoken like a true drummer.

I understand your point about drummers not being oscillators. Real
music does slow down and speed up and that contributes to the
musicality. Static tempos actually are boring and the mark of
    amateurish production.

If you were to look at (for example) some of the stuff I've submitted
to the various GUITAR and COMMUSIC tapes (collections of recordings
from DEC employees) you'd find that most of my stuff has tempo
variation even though it was ALL recorded to a click track. I actually
took the time to create a "tempo track" where (just like a real drummer
does) the tempo varies between the verse, the chorus, break, etc.

And I can definitely hear the difference when I flatten out that tempo
track. Parts that I sped up seem to "pull", parts that I slowed down
    seem to "push".

The reason you don't see any value to playing to a click track is that
your band doesn't do anything with MIDI.

One reason to "be ABLE to play to a click track" is to be able to
use the editing functions of sequencers.

We recorded our Metropolis demo in "free time". That is, we did use
a sequencer but the beat of the music isn't sync'ed to the beat of
    the sequencer.

I would NOT do it that way again.

    1) It means that I can't quantize parts
    2) It means that I can't notate parts automatically
    3) It means that I can't perform operations on sections denoted by
bars (like say "tranpose bars 5 thru 7")
    4) Because the MIDI data doesn't correspond to things like "quarter
notes" the various ways to display track data end up putting
stuff on the screen that's difficult to relate to what you think
    	of in your head.

Wanna know how I would do things ideally? I'd have the drummer record
a track but NOT to a click track and use a device that's available to
turn what he plays into a tempo track.

Then, I'd either keep what he played or (more likely) have him
re-record it to a click track that's based on the tempo of his original
    track.

    > But playing drums along with a metronome is pretty hard to do and stay
    > in sync for longer than a minute.

My experience is that some drummers have no problem with this, others
simply can't do it. It's almost like there's no middle ground.

I do know that conventional wisdom among drum instructors is that its
very valuable to practice BOTH with a metronome and (at other times)
    without one.

    Am I understanding this correctly?

Are you saying that you can play something totally out of tempo and
Cakewalk has the ability to figure what YOUR tempo was, and throw
out the original tempo so that the notes you played land on the beat?

Cause... my understanding of so-called "groove" functions was that
they were kinda like quantize except that instead of quantizing to
the beat, you could quantize one instrument to another.

For example, you can quantize the bass guitar track so that it always
locked into the bass drum for a really tight rhythm section.

Which of those two is it?

If it's that it can derive a tempo track from an arbitrary performance
    my next question is:

    		Where can I get a copy!!!! ;-)

    the later... Here's the scoop:

jc plugs his guitar in and just plays something and records direct to
disk via your favorite WAVE editor. The tempo meanders.

Next, you open up CakePro and suck up the wave file, and prepare to
add a snare - but you screw it up. So, you tell CakePro to quantize
the midi snare to the WAVE you recorded earlier, and "presto", you
get a snare thats quantized to your meandering mess... (hence, my
    original"groove"...

don't and some I've never heard of and thanks to a few people in here,
I have been introduced to some new bands in which I enjoy listening to.
Dream Theater being one of them. (or do they suck in you opinon too?)

So ok, tell us what you think of bands, whether you like 'em or not,
but why go on and say that whoever likes them is stupid??

I don`t remember calling anyone anything.

64.515THEMAX::VASQUEZFri May 24 1996 02:125
The only reason someone would think that Dream Theater sucks would
be that they are jealous of there playing ability.

Technical playing don`t always make a band good. Although DT ain`t the
worst band I ever heard, I don`t get into theur music. I guess I just
said that they suck to be a smart a$$.

That is true, but even if you don't like their style of music you
can still agree that they can play really well.

The main point of this arguement is that we all agree:: Def
Leppard sucks. Anyone who likes Def Leppard also sucks.
