63.0. "Fender Lovers and Haters" by HAZEL::STARR (You grow up and you calm down) Tue May 24 1988 13:45

OK, so here's my Fender love/hate topic...

Why are you guys so down on Fender? I agree there are some
problems, especiallly with the newer models, but in a Strat
I just dump in a Seymour Duncan humbucker to get rid of that
noise/hum. Other than that I'm all set. (Although I'll admit
the tremolo sucks, I don't use it, so I don't care.)

Or is it that the Strat is more of a bluesey instrument rather
than HM? Obviously, guitars like the Charvel/Jackson, etc. are
made for HM, but they seem to me to lack a distinctive tone.
I love a Les Paul for crunh rhythm, and a Strat for leads.

    Can I have some comments?

    Alan S.

(Maybe this belongs in the GUITAR notes, but let's keep it
here for now, with the people who like *real* music :^) ).

Well, I used to have a strat. By the time I got the C&W twang out
of it, I'd spent enough to buy a Charvel/Jackson... So I did.

They twang too much. I never liked Clapton or Hendrix that much
anyhow... Not that they aren't good at what they do (they are),
they jist don't float my boat.

Well, Yngwie J.Malmsteen use's Strats, Clapton use's Strats, John
Norumn use's Strats so they've got good references!!!

Me?? I don't use 'em coz as I'm a trainee at DEC I can't afford
one, but I've played on one and they've got a real nice feel but
as my use of them is limited I can't really comment on the tremolo
    system or the pickups.

What do they sell for in the States??

63.4Some serious questionsHAZEL::STARRYou grow up and you calm downTue May 24 1988 14:3315
    wjb,

How much did your friend end up putting into his Strats? I
wuldn't mind making my Start easier to play, but I get the
felling it would cost a fortune, which I can't afford.

But the big question is, how did it sound after all the
modifications? Did it still sound like a Start should? It
seems to me that if you play with a guitar too much, you can
lose the reason you bought it for in the first place (the
    sound).

I'll stick with my Memphis Explorer, thank you.

I paid $300 for the guitar, case, amp, strap, cord.

Then I got 2 pedals (Heavy_Metal and American Metal) for
        another $170.

        I added a Fender Showman 100 Watt for $200.

And I have a total of $670 invested, which is 1/2 of one
of your guitars. (But then again, I don't play in a band,
so I don't need anything fancy).

63.6Just MY opinionCSC32::G_HOUSEGreg House - CSC/CSTue May 24 1988 15:1013
I have a Strat that plays really nice, but I'm sure that the guy who
had it before me had mucho fret work done on it. It's got a set of
EMGs in it that give it a really burning screaming sound, really hot.
Unfortunately, it doesn't have a trem, it was a hardtail. Good for
rhythm work 'cause it stays in tune forever. Don't think I could
stand a stock one. The pickups, blegh. The trem, ack!

Can you say, "Whaddaya mean the Gs outta tune *^&%%%# AGAIN!!!?!??!"

    ...I thought ya could.

63.7how about a Kent ?NINJA::COOPERTue May 24 1988 16:217
Not many people can play a C/J well enough to do it justice. I
know I can't ! In fact, if this were the pivotal point of guitars,
I'd still have my Kent L-P copy !

That's reassuring, I was thinking of going back to my old Ibanez
LP copy, the one that looks like someone tried the old Pete Townsend
trick. All the binding is busted off the bottom & one layer of
the veneer (and finish) is missing.

But, really JC, you shouldn't be so modest. I heard you're some
sort of fretboard burner! Me, I'm just a hack (for now).

    wjb,

I remember reading in the GUITAR file (BHM - Before HM file) about
the new Fender amps. Weren't they really expensive, like over $1000?
At that price, why settle for a Boogie substitute when you could
    just buy one?

My first amp was a Fender Princeton, you're talking ancient. It
was a great little tube amp. I've tried my buddy's vintage all
original strat and did'nt like it. It may be that I'm used to my
Kramer but I just could'nt get the sound I wanted from the stupid
thing. I'm no Macalpine so I'm definitely no authority.

Gee officer I did'nt realize it was that loud!

Well, gang, I gotta tell ya I've got a Strat ('79 - Vintage!)
and yer dead on about that C/W twang. Unless you're into da
blooze (as I am) then you might not like 'em. BUT - we are
talking stock here. I believe that the tone and sustain of
an instrument are derived from its construction, i.e. type
of wood, method of neck attachment, and pickup type and
position. Several things can change the sound considerably,
such as new pickups, effects, amps, picks, or even playing
closer to the neck than the bridge (or the opposite). Some
feel that the single-coil pickups on Fenders are good with
effects and/or overdriven amps, because they have a bite that
is difficult to accomplish with Gibson-style humbuckers. Also,
they do not max out in the midrange, as humbuckers sometime
will. However, they feedback like a b*tch. I'm not talking
Ted Nugent controlled feedback here, I mean a high-pitched
microphonic squeal that no one - not even headbangers - can
stand. This could be fixed by different pickups - but my amp
(Fender Vibro Champ) doesn't get to loud too often with this
axe. Wait 'til I find a 8-inch Celestion speaker...

         Re: .9 -

Check out the Charvel Model 1 and Model 2. I just put a Model
1 on layaway (layaway is a thing that music stores have for
low-rent types such as myself). The Model 1 has a maple neck
         and fingerboard, 1 humbucker or 3 single-coils, Fender-type
vibrato, and any color you want just so's it's red or black.
The Model 2 has, I think, a Jackson tremolo and a rosewood
fingerboard for more bucks. My Model 1 was $200 w/out case
on sale. If you can't afford that, tell KO you need a raise.

We now have Scary buying a Strat and putting the Kramer into storage.

What's next? Will Coop finally realize that there is life after Charvel? 8^)

Will wonders never cease?????

Actually, I'm quite happy now... We played four sets at our outdoor gig
this past weekend... Two with my new hot-pink Ibanez (Thanks Buck!), and two
sets with my Charvel.

The Charvel/Ibanez lineup does everything I need for guitar sounds to cover
anything from Van Morrisons "Brown Eyed Girl" to the JC Original "Take A Chance"
to Metallica's Eye Of The Beholder.

The Ibanez is a great axe...A little dirty for real clean (but loud) work,
and slightly limited in tonal variations...But the Charvel picks up all the
slack wwith it's active electronix and super clean pickups.

If I were to get a Gibson it'd be an Explorer with stripes...
