51.0. "Ego - significant or not?" by TIGER::SLABOUNTY (A Momentary Lapse of Reason) Thu May 19 1988 19:35

In the VH note, it is remarked (several times) that DLR's
ego gets in the way of his talent, and that he is some-
        what less-loved because of it.

Why is this? How often do you see someone in concert or
in a video compared to the amount of time you spend just
listening to the music on the radio or from your music
        collection?

Do you notice some kind of sign that there is a prevalence
of ego that gets in the way of a band's sound?

A good example ... DLR (surprise!!). Why would someone
with an ego of his caliber join up with the likes of an
EVH if he himself wanted the attention? EVH DEFINITELY
        steals the show from Dave.

And then Dave goes out on his own and hires a band ...
Steve Vai, who's one of the (if not THE) best guitarist
in Heavy_Metal right now? And Billy Sheehan, rated one
of the best bassists in the business (source unknown, but
I believe it was a readers' poll from a music magazine)?

For the amount of time you actually watch DLR perform
(and show off his tremendous muscles, etc.), his ego
should play little or no part in whether you like him or
not. Whether he likes himself too much for you to be
able to stand or not, he still has talent (and continues
to prove it everytime he appears on an album).

So I leave the explanations to the HM community.

                                                       GTI

For along time I thought DLR was the best. He has an outstanding
HM voice, he can move on stage, put action into HM, hey, he's got
alot of energy. The guy is a character. As far as ego, if you combine
it with confidence, as DLR shows, you can go to the top.

Of course, there is a body of thought that says when
you're really good it's not called ego... it's called
confidence. Could it be that what appears to us as ego
is really nothing more than DLR saying "Hey, I already
made it to the top... what do I care what you think of
    	me now?"

Billy S. played on the album, but is no touring on the new album.

You also forgot to mention the drummer for his band, Bisset.
I think he is one of the most up and coming, if not there, new
H.M. drummers. His brother is playing base on the tour. I forgot
his first name though..... A little bit of info,

51.5Ego vs. ConfidenceRAVEN1::JERRYWHITEFri May 20 1988 00:5916
There's a fine line between confidence and ego. Ediie VH is
confident. So are Vai and Lynch. They let the pure talent talk.
To me, it's the one's that have to jump up and down to get noticed
that have the egos ( with prblems to match). I guess Roth's cocky
attitude is what get's him noticed but it's like listening to the
phone ring, and ring, and ring. After you've listened to all the
noise and you finally give him a chance - sorry, nobody home. Ego
is a big part of HM but I think it started out as being confident
in what you were doing because in the early days with all the negative
publicity you HAD to be confident to be taken seriously. To me,
people with the big egos are just lying to their self in hopes that
they and those around them will believe 'em. Sorry Dave, I ain't
    buyin' it !!

What about Malmsteen, he's GOTTA have one og the biggest ego's in
HM. The guy is _VERY_ good at what he does, but soon he won't be
able to get his head on stage....

    Just an opinion

I agree about Yngwie. He's one of my favorites but I think his
massive ego is preventing him from putting out a real killer album
His first 3 records (Beyond The Sun, Marching Out, and Trilogy)
were all produced by the man himself. His latest was co-produced
and is quickly becoming my favorite, not including his work with
    Alcatrazz.

Q. How many lead singers does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A. One - they just stand there and the world revolves around them.

    Q. How many guitarists does it take to change a light bulb ?
    A. 11... One to change the bulb, and ten to sit around saying,
       "I can do it better..."
