    Metallica also has a video out called "Cliff 'em All"
    It is named for their ex-bass player who was killed in traffic
    accident in Europe. (The band's bus tipped over, he fell out a
    window, and was crushed by the bus.)
    
    The video is about 90 minutes long, and costs $19.95.
    
    Some of the clips are not very high-quality, as they used bootleg
    tapes from fans. But the feel is there, and some of the clips are
    high-quality. Definitely worth the bucks.

    Well, I just purchased Master of Puppets, and I like it a lot.
    The album isn't all speed as was Kill em All, but it's still hot
    and heavy, and Orion is an awesome instrumental.

    Dave Mustain of Megadeth was Metallica's original Lead guitarist.
    
    He was bumped from the band just before they recorded Kill em All!
   
    Lars and James thought his soloing was "mindless doodling". They
    got Kirk Hammett from a band called Exodus via metallica's sound
    man who used to be Exodus' manager.

    
    
    	Talking of Dave Mustaine, check out Mechanix on Megadeth's first
    album, killing is ny business..., and The Four Horsemen on Metallica's
    first album Kill 'em all.  They are exactly the same song with just
    different lyrics. Mustaine did write The Four Horseman when he was
    with Metallica but isn't it odd that he should re-write it for
    Megaduff??

    added lyrics and the creeping death ep songs. their new album is
    supposed to be out this month (i think). i heard the title but dont
    rember what it is.  with their new bassist jason it should kick
    ass.  there are some changes in there style,  they said now instead
    of repeating a riff 12 times it'll be only 7 or 8 times. nothing
    to really worry about.  their home vid tape is definitely worth
    the $$$$.  i hope this has some new stuff for ya all and not some

     Last night on Mtv they asked Lars what the new album would be
    called and he said "...and Justice for All". They also said Metallica
    is done recording and are mixing it now during there free time from
    the Monsters tour so it should be out around August.

from Europe they will start an American tour with Queensryche.  But don't get
too stoked about that yet, cause we all know what happened with the rumor of

    	Well, I figured I'd wait and see if Bill Upham would enter
    his review, but he hasn't so I'm gonna....
    
    I've been listening to B.U.'s brand new copy of Garage Days
    Re_revisited recorded July of last year. 
    This album is the balls. 
    It's 5 cover tunes of some of Metallica's fave bands/tunes.
    It's a little bit rough, supposedly they recorded it in 6 days,
    borrowing studio time from Ted Nugent after they'd been practicing
    them in the garage since they got off the Masters tour.
    	The songs they cover are incredible :
    Helpless 	by Diamondhead
    The Small Hours	by Holocaust
    The Wait		by Killing Joke
    Crash Course in Brain Surgery	by Budgie
    and Last Caress/Green Hell 	by the Misfits
    
    The mix is great, Jason, Kirk and Lars get to show off a little,
    and James' voice sounds incredible.
    
    This band gets better and better. I can't wait for their next 
    non-bullsh** kick a** album.

    BTW, I can't believe they did re-rev. in six days. It sounds great!
    Newsted sounds good in re-rev, but Cliff was the best. Listen to
    Anesthesia/Pulling Teeth and you'll know why. In some heavy metal
    mag, I read that the music in To Live Is To Die (I believe the name
    was), a song on And Justice for All was written by Cliff before
    his death. It'll probably be the best song on the tape.

    Anybody heard the new Metallica album? Not sure how long it's been
    on the shelf, stumbled on it last nite. It's called '...AND JUSTICE
    FOR ALL' It's okay, I'm still listening to the first side. Haven't
    really had a chance to hear the whole thing, but it sounds good.

    	Yeah, I agree. I've given it 3 listens now, and that's also
    what I think.
    	The musicianship is awesome.
    	The lyrics are excellent (especially in "One", and Cliff Burton's
    lyrics in "To Live is to Die")
    	It's got a great feeling to it, very heavy sounding, but
    on the average it's slower and somewhat lumbering.
    	It seems like each song has high points, and subdued parts.
    
    	I do like it, but it's different than the "speedy" previous
    albums, and frankly, I'd like a little more speed in there.

    Metallica are touring the UK this month with the Quire Boys as the
    support band although I believe there is talk of there being another
    support band - anybody know for sure?
    
    I seen the Cliff em all video last week for the first time and didn't
    like it at all. The quality of the sound and the home Vid's
    were terrible. Now before people start jumping down my throat
    for saying this, I know the video was a tribute to Cliff but for
    a band that normally presents good quality material it was a bit
    of a let down.
    
    Has anybody got any bootleg metallica albums? 
    One of my buddies has the Four Horsemen Album + a few more.

    
    *finally* got "...and justice for all" over the weekend, and its
    pretty good.  Seems slower than Master of Puppets, but still cool.

    I'm not jumping down your throat, but Metallica DOESN'T DO videos,
    and didn't make the Cliff 'em All vid. They were bootleg films
    for the most part shot from video-cams in the audience put together
    by Metallica as a tribute to Cliff. That's also why it only
    costs $19.98. I doubt they would ever go the slick production 50
    dollar money-raking video route, and I doubt you'll ever see
    Metallica making a video again.

           On "Garage Days" there are one or two Misfits covers.  The two

    I picked up "...and justice for all" last week and have had plenty
    of time to give it a good listen.  
    
    I like the album, although most of the songs are not as strong as the
    ones on Master of Puppets.  MoP was an exceptional album, most of the
    songs were very powerful, both musically and lyrically.  On AJFA, the
    songs are lyrically powerful, but not as gripping musically (for me).
    It's a little more like the way I perceive Ride the Lightning. 
    
    My favorite song on AJFA is the title track, great song.

     I got my copy of AJFA the same time as motorbreath, just never
    got around to replying. It is a GREAT album. I have listened to
    it everyday to and from work since I bought it. It is very intense.
    
     Kirk does one of those dive-bombs on Shortest Straw.

      This last weekend I picked up Queensryche "Operation Mindcrime"
    from all the advice of Queensryche fans in the conference. I like
    it alot thought it was really well done both musically and in the
    concept. My question to all you Metallica fans out there, what is
    your advice to a first time buyer of Metallica material and why??

Yeah, I would also say Master of Puppets as the best place to start.
This ha a nioce balance between the speed metal and the more melodic
stuff. Also, this album is very well produced, and has a killer 
sound, especially on CD.

    	Well, each Metallica album is different.
    (I'm ignoring eps on purpose here)
    
    The first album is raw chainsaw music in the vein of Motorhead 
    IMO, (I'm talking about Kill em All here). This album turned me
    on to Metallica.
    
    The second album Ride the Lightning, is probably the favorite of
    a majority of Metallica fans. Creeping Death is on the album, as
    is Fade to Black, and For Whom the Bell Tolls. This album is 
    produced much better, and is musically superior to Kill em All.
    
    The third album, Master of Puppets is instrumentally superior to
    Ride the Lightning, but the compositions are maybe a little weaker.
    I love the album anyway, as it's got some great songs, including
    my favorite instrumental piece of all time, Orion.
    
    You have probably already read what I think of ...And Justice for
    All. 
    	I'd buy Ride the Lightning, or Master of Puppets first, if I
    were you, although, you can't go wrong with any of their albums,
    as they are all fantastic (yes, I am a big Metallica fan!)
    
    I think you'd appreciate AJFA more if you had those two albums first.

    Surprised to hear you say that, MB, I thought that compositionally
    Master of Puppets was stronger.  As Cat mentioned it is also very well
    produced. 
    
    I would recommend Master of Puppets first, then Ride the Lightning.
    When I first got into Metallica (fairly recently, as a result of this
    conference) I couldn't decide between the two, so I bought them both at
    the same time.  I liked RtL better at first, but the more I listened to
    MoP, the more it grew on me.  I now consider it my favorite Metallica
    album.  I thought the lyrics on MoP were very strong, especially on the
    songs Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), and Disposable
    Heros. 
                     
    AJfA is a good heavy album, I rank it right up there with RtL. The
    title track is my favorite.

    Well, in my humble opinion, Master Of Puppets is the album to buy
    to get turned on to Metallica.  Personally, the one tune that Metallica
    does that I really like is Sanitarium...and it's on Master Of Puppets.
     
    Since I'm not a big metallica fan, I can't much more, without asking
    to be napalmed !

                I vote  for  RtL.   Sanitarium is great (on MoP),
                but FWtBTolls is even better! 
                
                They've gone thrashier  these days, away from the
                speed  metal (although, there  are  a  couple  of
                great SM tunes on AJfA).
                
                

    I think the Bass drum sound is great.  They don't sound electronic,
    so I don't think It's unnatural.  I'm not sure how they came out
    with that sound, all I know is that thing have been falling off
    of shelves at my house. (my speakers have a nice big subwoofer on
    the back!)   
    
    So does anyone know of any U.S. dates yet??  I'm dying to see them

    What I see as percular (sp) is this:  That bass drum sound stuck
    out when I saw them on the monsters tour in Maine.  Maybe it's the
    type of drum or Microphone or something simple like that.  No other
    band that I saw that day had a bass drum that sounded quite like
    larz's.

                on one "import"  CD yesterday.  I'd never seen it
                before.  Of course  I  had  to  grab  it.    Just
                thought  I'd  mention  it for  you  Metallica  CD

    		**** METALLICA AND DANZIG ****
    		HAMMERSMITH ODEON 10TH OCTOBER
    
    
    	This was probably one of the best concerts this century.
    
    DANZIG - Glen Danzig, former singer with the MISFITS, now with his
    own band.  And what a surprise this lot were!  Only one recognisable
    Misfits song, Queen Wasp, all the rest was new material and it was
    great.  Definite doom/death thrash, well wicked.  Only two complaints
    1) the set was only 35 minutes long.
    2) he needs a better guitarist.
    
    
    			***** METALLICA *****
    
    	The new stage show is fantastic, the best I've ever seen at
    Hammersmith, these guys actually made an effort.  It's basically
    the Justice For All album cover, statue of lady justice in bondage
    and broken pillars around the place.  The lights were quite unusual
    to, red/green/white floodlights into the crowd, and at one point
    (the end of And Justice For All) one set of lights was swung down
    while the statue was being blown to bits with some nifty pyros (the
    lights falling damned near s**t me up, thought they would fall on
    Lars).
    	The songs included, in no particular order: Blackened, Master
    of Puppets, Dammage Inc., Battery, Whiplash, Seek and Destroy, a
    very moving rendition of One, Creeping Death, For whom the Bell
    Tolls, Sanitarium, The Four Horsemen, Fade to Black, And Justice
    for All, Harvester of Sorrow.
    	Two encores later and a twenty minute jam of favourite covers
    including a brilliant copy of PROWLER (Iron Maiden), Am I Evil?,
    Last Caress, Helpless.
    	A couple of notable points were the two solos, Jasun Newkid's
    bass solo was very good, but not a patch on Cliff RIP.  Krk Hamster's
    solo was excellent, during which I recognised a very famous solo
    but for the life of me I can't name.
    	Lars drumming is improving tremendously, he only lost time once
    during Damage Inc.  And Jaymz is just Jaymz as always, dig the new
    beard.
    	Great value for money gig, Metallicatz on for two hours.  This
    is a must for any self respecting metal fan, go see them soon or
    miss the experience of a lifetime.

    Just a word of warning to you metallica Cd colloctors.  Metallica
    prides itself on the quality of the sound on It's albums.  This
    Disc is a major exception to the rule.  Over all, the sound is pretty
    Cr*ppy, especially the live cuts.
    
    This is not to say, "Don't buy this disc", by all means get it,
    the songs are great, but don't expect the same incredible sound
    quality offered on the other Metallica discs.

    Haven't read this file for a while, but I had to put in my two cents.
    Reading the review of the H.O. show gave me goosebumps. I can't
    wait till they come around. IMO, Metallica is the most awesome band
    to come around in years.  Their albums seem to get better and better
    everytime, and the production is phenomenal.
    
    AJFA has been in my tape deck since I bought it, and I don't see
    it coming out any time in the near future.  I don't think James
    gets nearly enough credit. On the album he is credited with playing
    all the rhythm, harmony and acoustic guitars. The guy is unreal.
    Kirk is definitely showing the Joe S. influence, which to me is
    great.  His solos have become more melodic but remain very intense,
    and his use of weird scales and tricks always seem to fit in very
    nicely with James' ever changing tempos and progressions.
    Good article on Kirk in the latest Guitar World. He said that doing
    the solos was a nightmare because of all the changes, but I think
    he has done a fantastic job.
    
    Referring back to the discussion of which Metallica to buy, I think
    the best thing to do is buy them in the order in which they were
    made.  It's incredible how this group has matured, both in playing
    and production, and buying the albums in order and listening to
    each for a while before moving on is a great way of appreciating
    what they have accomplished.
    
    Well, I could go on forever praising this group, but enough said.

    I was looking at my CD insert last night of AJFA, and I read that
    there was some guy who engineered the drums on a couple of tracks.
    I think it was Shortest Straw and Harvester Of Sorrow.  I don't
    know what he did, but I would bet that he is the reason the bass
    drum sound stands out as something a little different on a couple
    of songs.

    I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned that Metallica has now made a
    VIDEO.  I saw part of an interview with them on MTV this weekend and
    they were talking about it.  They also had some good live footage as
    interview background, "Shortest Straw" etc.  The videos for the song
    "One"...

    Since there are so many illegal concert tapes of theirs out, they
    are allowing people in a special section at some of the shows to
    tape it.  Approx 200-300 people per show.

    	   Can anyone confirm this? Someone told me that the intro to

    about none other than Metallica.  It is an EXCELLENT article, and
    I highly recommend it to all metal(lica) fans everywhere.  I'm not

    The original is the same and it's kind of freaky. I thought it was
    maybe a flanger or something but no doubt I'm wrong.
    
    Has anyone heard the original by Killing Joke ? IMO it is much
    better than the Metallica version - it's really heavy and

    Nope, he's right, it's true. I didn't know what to think when I
    read it. They will be hacking off some of "One" to make it
    radio-able, and video-able. 
    Lars' explanation was that if they took a minute and a half out
    of the song to be able to expose another 300,000 kids to their
    music, that it was a good idea.
    It was also pointed out that they released an edited version of
    "For Whom the Bell Tolls" in 1984.
    
    I'd be happy just to put on MTV, or the radio, and hear a Metallica
    song myself.

    A few point to ponder about Metallica of late:
    
    1)  I heard that they vowed NEVER to do video's but now that AJFA
    	is skyrocketing, "One" will be on the Headgiver's ball this
    	weekend.
    
    2)	They never wanted to be a "radio band" because the music mattered
    	more than the bucks, but now that AJFA is kicking butt, a stream-
    	lined version of "One" is now on the FM airwaves, even down
    	here in the redneck belt.
    
    I can see both sides of the oncoming argument:YES, they should get
    the music to as many listeners as possible at any means, and, NO,
    they're already doing very well with the latest effort, why alter
    it just to please a few skeptics.
    
    So what do you folks think ???? Hmmmmmm ??
    
    
    Personally, I'm all for it !!  The Heavy Metal crowd is finally
    being noticed in a positive manner, Metallica has the ball, wanna
    see some points on the board !

    I saw the video last night on "the ball" and it was VERY classy!
    If Heavy Metal is ever to be recognized by the rest of the music
    world as a true art form then this is the way it will have to be
    presented.  I give it 17 stars ...

    Yeah, I saw it too.  I thought it was well done, exactly like I'd
    expect, but...(you knew it was coming)...I thought that they downplayed
    the music.  I could see why they might have thought they needed
    to do that with a depressing song like One, since if someone heard
    it that did't follow the story or know where it came from, it would
    probably turn them off.
    
    Like everyone seems to say, hey guys, milk it for what it's worth
    as long as the music is still good.  Then when the trendy pop crowd
    turns their backs on you, we'll still be around cheering ya on!

    The video was very well done.  It contains mostly footage from the
    movie "Johnnys Got His Gun" which is essentually where the story
    for the song came from.  There is a little footage of the band,
    but not much (all in B&W).

       The tempo of the tune is great. I haven't heard a tune like that
    in ages.... The video shows a guy who lost his arms and legs in
    Vietnam laying in a hospital bed talking to himself....
    
          For some reason i find this tune to be the balls........

    I know exactly what MB is saying!  That was my reaction too.  I
    think the video was well done, but I don't like having the music
    underplayed by dialog from the movie which formed most of the video

    Have you seen the video we're talking about?  If not, the music
    is mixed into the background and dialog from the movie "Johnny got
    his Gun", which forms the backdrop for the video, is in the foreground
    (eg a lot louder than the Metallica song, in some places so much
    so that you can't hear the song at all).

    I think this is probably one of the best videos I've ever seen,
    not just because I'm a Metallica fanatic...
    
    I think that the footage shown of the movie as a backdrop to
    the song really drives home the idea of the song.
    
    	I didn't mind the fact that so much of the movie was shown
    as opposed to Metallica's playing. I took in the whole thing
    as a single piece of work, not just something to watch while
    I listened to the song.
    
    Now, if I could see one less Def Leppard video and one more Metallica
    video a day on MTV, I'd be happy.

    Actually, the song "One" has been one of my least favorites on ...And
    Justice for All for that very reason, because it depresses me so. I
    really like Metallica and the album in general, but "One" is just too
    depressing for me.  The video does nothing but augment that depressing
    feeling.  Personally, I never liked movies/books like Johnny Got His
    Gun because of that. 
    
    I guess I'm just superficial or something, because I prefer comedys and
    action films to stuff like that.  Platoon, Deliverence, Full Metal
    Jacket, the Deerhunter, that sort of thing are very low on my list of
    favorite things to watch.  I read books and watch movies to escape from
    reality, not to be smashed in the face with it! 
    
    I like a lot of energy, and despite their trend toward depressing
    lyrics, this is what makes me a big Metallica fan.

                          METALLICA MOVES TO CENTER STAGE

                LAKELAND, Fla -  Just  as Metallica helped change
                the face of the Grammys - it was one of five acts
                nominated for the first-ever hardrock/heavy metal
                award  last month, and it played  its  grim  song
                "One"  during the broadcast - it has  irrevocally
                changed the face of heavy metal.
                
                Only  three years ago, Metallica was a critically
                acclaimed,  but commercially insignificant  band.
                The San Francisco based quartet  was  the leading
                light of the so-called "thrash" or  "speed" metal
                bands,    but        in     a    highly-stylized,
                paint-by-the-numbers  mainstream field  ruled  by
                the likes of Ozzy  Osbourne and Poison [editorial
                comment:  this is absurd], Metallica was just the
                rude  relative,  slightly  unkempt  and a  trifle
                dangerous.
                
                Metallica  didn't  pander  to  preconceptions and
                didn't write  overtly catchy melodies.  It played
                ferocious,    somewhat  intricate,    hard-edged,
                complex heavy metal.   Its music took a number of
                sharp  zigs and zags.   Its  lyrics  addressed  a
                world    in   turmoil  and  Nuclear  devestation,
                personal  isolation,  drug  addiction,  misplaced
                justice, bogus faith  healers, capital punishment
                and gut-level, day-to-day frustration all figured
                in.
                
                Why?
                
                "The world is a dark  place," explained guitarist
                Kirk Hammett backstage during a stop  on  a  week
                long tour through Florida.  "It isn't  a  picnic,
                and  a lot of people don't like to  see  that  in
                their music.  They like to see it as  a wonderful
                place.  Come on, wake up and smell the coffee."
                
                Said bassist Jason Newsted: [turning the page]
                
                [uh,  oh.    I wasn't expecting the article to be
                quite this  long.  This thing takes up a third of
                a page at  least  .  .  .  well, I'll keep typing
                for now, but I  don't  think I'm going to  finish
                it . . . ]
                
                "We're  serious.    Thats what  really  different
                about this kind of music."
                
                Metallica,  which  has  sold  out  its  Worcester
                Centrum  date  March  16, is the scruffy  success
                story that did things its own way.   It  has sold
                more than2 million copies of its latest album, ".
                .  .  And Justice For All." A spokesman  for  its
                label, Elektra,  says  sales of 5 million are not
                out of the  question.    Metallica  is, arguably,
                positioned as 1989's [Scums  and  Poseurs, oops I
                mean]  Guns  N'  Roses,  the    most   improbable
                mainstream  breakthrough  since  the Beastie Boys
                did  it  in 1986.  Metallica has  a  #1  longform
                video ("Cliff 'Em All"), which has sold more than
                150K  copies,  a top 10 album AJFA and of  course
                the Grammy nomination and featured performance.
                
                Metallica has  made  its  climb,  by  and  large,
                without the support of traditional album oriented
                rock radio stations, which  are fearful the bands
                harsh  music will repel more  listeners  than  it
                will attract.  "One," however, may  be  the radio
                breakthrough.  "We've done 2M copies w/o  radio",
                says LU, "and I think if radio wants  to  jump on
                the  board,  they  are absolutely welcome to come
                along for the ride .  .  .  I dont have a problem
                sleeping because we  know  it  was  on our terms.
                Were incapable of doing something were not into."
                
                However the notion that  Metallica  was  up for a
                grammy - and was invited  to  play  on  the  show
                beaming  into  14.4M  US  homes -  still  boggles
                minds, especially the band.
                
                "I  think it's pretty bizarre," says LU,  "Pretty
                left fiend."
                
                "Amazing" says KH
                
                "Never in a million years", says JN.
                
                "I've  never been into that award kind of  stuff"
                says JH.  "Ive seen it a couple of  times  on  TV
                and    thought  it  was  a  bunch  of  hooey  and
                brown-nosing.  THey were pretty boring."

                      Boston Globe Metallica Article - Part 2
                
                Metallicas  Grammy    night  rendition  of  "One"
                started  with a  series  of  explosions,  as  the
                low-lit  stage filled with  flames  and  chemical
                smoke.  It began as  a  slow  mood piece and then
                speed-shifted into a blitzkrieg of molton metal -
                drums  like  machine  guns, guitars like air-raid
                sirens.    The  song is based on Dalton  Trumbo's
                "Johnny  Got  His  Gun,"  and  sung from the same
                point    of    view   -  inside  the  mind  of  a
                deaf-dumb-and-blind    limbless    war    victim.
                Hetfield tore into  the  final stanza:  "Landmine
                has taken my sight,  takene  my  speech, taken my
                hearing, taken my arms, taken  my  legs, taken my
                soul, left me with life in hell."
                
                If its musical outlook seems grotesque and grim -
                "We've written about death and dying in  alot  of
                different  ways,"  says  Ulrich;   "We don't sing
                about flowers and happy things very much," admits
                Newsted [I can  see them now, Searchin', Seek and
                Sniff the Daisys .    .   .] - dig deeper and you
                will find Metallica isn't endorsing  violence  or
                destruction;  it is simply pointing  it  out  and
                marrying it to bone-crunching metal.  "There's  a
                lot  of  negative,"  says Hetfield.  "I'm writing
                about life as I see it.  I look at the news every
                chance I get.  I used to hate reading:  now I get
                into it."
                
                Spend and time offstage with the band, and you'll
                spot its humor.  :We're basically pretty cheerful
                people," says Hammett.  "We all have a good sense
                of humor, and we don't walk around  with  a  dark
                cloud raining on us all the time."
                
                Of note:  It's a bit past 2  in the morning, and,
                in the Metallica tour van - yes, the white  three
                seater with "Satan  rides with us" immactualately
                inscribed on the sliding  door  panel  [love that
                one.  I can see  all  the people with the "God is
                my copilot" stickers kamakazeeing (sp?) the  van]
                - the band members raise a toast,  following  yet
                another sold out concert.  They've spirited a few
                Sapporo  drafts  away from their dressing room at
                Lakeland Civic  Center,  and Ulrich hoists one to
                "the bass player."
                
                The mood, for just a moment, is solemn.  THe bass
                player in question is dead.
                
                Cliff  Burton  -  one    of    the  band's  chief
                songwriters,  the  one  with  the    most  formal
                training, the one who brought elaborate arranging
                skills to the group - died after  the  band's van
                crashed  in Europe more than two years ago.    It
                would have been Burton's birthday.
                
                Newstead,  Burton's replacement,  tosses  half  a
                quizzical,  but  knowing look,  and  asks,  "What
                ABOUT the bass player?" All  laugh,  aware of the
                irony.  Burtin is missed, but  Metallica rides on
                - at ease with both the sensibility  and  the new
                guy, which, as Newstead says, he "will be  called
                until 2010."
                
                Hetfield  says  some  folks  figured  that,  when
                Burtoin died, Metallica  might  pack it in, or at
                least temper its obsession  with violent imagery.
                In  fact,  Metallicas  first  US   concert  after
                Burton's death was played on a  Providence  stage
                made up to look like a cemetary:  six large white
                crosses on stage and row upon row of  crosses  on
                the  backing scrim [what the hell is a scrim???].
                Of  Burton's    death   and  its  affect  on  his
                songwriting,  Hetfield  says  simply  that  death
                "means so much more to me now."
                
                Of  course,  Metallica  has   detractors.    Some
                critics  say  "AJFA" doesn't measure  up  to  two
                earlier  efforts,  "RTL and MOP" and  allege  the
                band  has  sold  out.    Or  they    claim   that
                ex-Metallica  guitarist  (now    Megadeth)   Dave
                Mustaine wrote the band's  best material.  Ulrich
                maintains    Mustaine's    influence   is  highly
                overrated, that he only wrote six  songs that the
                group recorded.  "Dave was pretty ignorant  about
                a  lot  of things, but he was a  quick  learner,"
                says Ulrich.  "Dave is a very bitter person.   He
                had a chip on his shoulder for a very long time."
                Hetfield  says  if anyone  charges  the  bandwith
                "selling out," well, "I don't  think  they have a
                concept of what selling out means.    Selling out
                means you're up there with these other  bands who
                have sold out.  We've done it our  way  form  day
                one."

      I went to see Metallica at the Nassau Coliseum N.Y on
    Wed.8th.I've been to over hundred concert since i came to
    this country and i've seen Metallica 4 times before(2 times
    with Cliff Burton).I couldn't believe they were f:-king better
    than i've ever seen before.I mean they were kicking f;-)ing
    a** .80 dollars for a d*mn ticket,that wasn't bad at all.
    James' voice was more powerfull.Jason was great but still
    couldn't compare with Cliff.You guys who are planning to see
    them at the Centrum in Worcester,make sure don't miss them.
    (IMO) If Cliff still alive that would be a perfect concert.

    The Herald on Monday ran a real good review of Metallica
    saying "Metallica has "made it" stating they have no costumes
    or gimmicks, just heavy metal prowess that's finally gaining
    them long-awaited appreciation."  If you want a copy of the

    	I agree with pete.  Lars couldnt reproduce that killer Double
    Bass sound used in one and in a few other tunes..but who knows..maybe
    it was an off night.
    
    	Jason is a decent bassist..but his solo was unimpressive..Burton
    ruled(s) at that..
    
    	As far as the show went..the pyros were great... I thought the
    Centrum outlaw'd them..but I guess the times are a changin'..eh?
    
    	I loved it when the statue collapsed...."Watch out for that
    head!!!"
    
    	The sound was the best they've ever had...they got someone who
    does it right...FINALLY!!!
    
    	All in all..a great show..too bad I missed 3/4 of Queensryche...

    Great show.  I was kinda disappointed that they went the "5-minute
    bass solo" and "5-minute guitar solo" route that EVERY metal band
    has to do.  Besides that, I really liked it.
    
    A note about the pyrotechnics:  we had side stage seats and after
    Queensryche finished, some guy (who seemed to be the head of the
    crew) was showing the fire chief (and two other guys who looked
    like policemen) around the stage.  The chief was testing the materials
    that the statue was made out of, examining the flash pots, etc.
    He had an official looking document in his hand.  What I think was
    going on was the crew was trying to get a waiver of some kind from
    the fire chief to allow the pyrotechnics to happen.

    Is it possible that the band Metallica and the word mainstream are
    written and spoken about in conjunction with each other?  Has the
    fact that a band that defies musical definition has had an album
    go platinum, left critics absolutely unprepared to understand such
    a strange phenomenon?
    
    In front of a sold out Centrum, Metallica blasted through two of
    the best hard rock concert hours this city has ever seen.  The quartet
    with an appetite for the darker side simply kept up an unbelievable
    pace for an arena act.  Their high level of energy combined with
    serious and intense material made for an unforgettable musical 
    experience.
    
    It is true that Metallica blew away the headliners during last summer's
    Monsters of Rock Tour, and yes, they were the talk of the Grammy's,
    but Metallica, whose attitudes reflect a subculture of American
    youth obsessed with death, despair, depression, and profound nihilism
    will never be a mainstream act, period.
    
    Yet from the onset, Metallica's fanatical following were in for
    the time of their lives. Surely, the uninitiated might find it
    difficult to accept that this type of concert can be considered
    fun, especially in light of the negative nature of the material,
    but it was the essence of the show.  The music, which serves as
    a form of release for all of the negative, was quality entertainment.
    
    The show opened with "Blackened", a pulsing song displaying real
    anger, and swept away the audience.  Discordent and thrashing,
    guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield, guitarist Kirk Hammett, drummer
    Lars Ulrich, and bassist Jason Newsted blazed into "For Whom the
    Bell Tolls," a haunting chilling number.
    
    Hammett's screeching solos were in full evidence during "Sanatarium",
    a bone jarring tune with a surprisingly melodic feel.  The pained
    "Harvester of Sorrow" ground with power as the Centrum rocked.
    
    The sonic punishment continued with "Eye of the Beholder", energetic
    and brash, highlighted by dueling guitar work of Hetfiled and Hammett.
    The song, which espouses the freedom of individual expression was
    a high moment in the show.
    
    Newsted's Bass solo that followed was not excessive, but relatively
    uninspired, as was the following mellow little piece.  Not to worry.
    "Masters of Puppetts," an anti-cocaine number, quickly revived the
    frenetic place.  The tune sizzled for eight plus minuets and featured
    the excellent work of Ulrich and Newsted, whose amazing capacity
    for rearranging pace in various ways, carried the song.
    
    "One", the song which Metallica played on the Grammy television
    show was yet another display for Hammetts's splendid guitar and
    Hetfields powerful vocals.  "Seek and Destroy" blazed, pausing only
    so that Hetfield could share a beer with the audience.
    
    "...And Justice For All" was another highlight, fulfilled by excellent
    and creative stage effects.  The backdrop, depicting a statue of
    a blindfolded Lady Justice, self destructed and crumbled during
    the extremely manic portion of the song. Simply awesome.
    
    "Creeping Death" was raging as was "Fade to Black". "Battery" brought
    the set to a resounding conclusion.
                                                 
    

    
        Well, I borrowed the "Master of Puppets" CD (thanks BK) and
        started to listen to it in the car today.
    
        I think I like RTL alot better, but I'll give it a chance.

    Metallica was the ballz last night in Providence!  My ears are still
    ringing, what a great show!  I saw them at the Centrum two weeks
    ago, the stage show was a little different in Providence, (more
    blasts and fireworks!) but basically, the whole show was the same,
    and the crowd wasn't as wild as at the Centrum.  Queensryche as
    usual did everything to a tee, and sounded just as good live as
    they do recorded and mixed.  If you haven't seen this show yet and
    have a chance to, do so!  It's one of the best I've seen so far!

    I, like CJ, went to both shows and I agree about the crowd.  Rhode
    Island must be "calmer gentler" state. (Thanks George B.).  As usual,
    they were awesome!  
    
    Some differences between the Centrum and Civic Center shows:
    They covered Budgie's "Breadfan" for the last tune.
    They left out the short little metal version of "La Bamba" but played
    the intro to "The Prince", another Budgie cover.
    
    My brother and I hung out afterward to meet the boyz.  They were all
    really cool.  Made sure everyone who wanted any, got pictures and
    autographs.  Nice lid, Jason.  Agagaga!!  The Civic Center security
    guards think they're God.  Sorry guys, note *quite*.
    
    To those whom I was supposed to meet up with last night... sorry if I
    caused y'all any inconvenience.  I talked to Mike and Shawn this

    Just thought that I'd mention that Metallica is the featured artists
    in this months issue of Guitar Player Magazine.  There are extensive
    interviews with James and Kirk, and a smaller but still interesting
    interview with Jason.
    
    For you guitar players (and wannabees, like me) there are also some
    transcriptions of portions of several different songs.
    
    BTW:  In the cover photo of James and Kirk, James is holding a guitar
    that says "Kill Bon Jovi" on the headstock.  I got a laugh outta
    that!

    something  Saturday  after  things calmed down. . .)  I also got
    a  chance  to  listen  to  the whole thing from beginning to end,
    and  yep. . .it  got  me going !  Much better IMHO than RTL.  My
    mother even liked it. . .and she's 65.  She said, `What was that
    gawd  awful racket I heard coming from your place ?'  `METALLICA
    mom. . .nothing to worry about.' :^)  She thought my furnace had
    problems again. . . :^)

    Last night on WAAF I heard (I forget who was DJ) say that there
    is a possibility of Metallica and the Cult getting together for
    their next tour?  The DJ said that Metallica and the Cult met at
    the Grammys and they got along really well, and talk of a tour
    has been brought out in the open.  This is too good to be true!!!

    I don't think it'll come to Great Woods.  I believe the town counsil
    has final say on concerts, and come to think of it, they would have
    a hell of a time getting a permit in that communist town of Foxboro.
    
    And I completely agree.
    I've seen the Cult 3 times (once on the Love tour, AWESOME) and
    I've seen Metallica 3 times (again, AWESOME)
    
    Would be a great show!  Let's hope they decide to come east again...

    live, and the two of them would blow the world away.. I love both

    As far as great woods goes, they rejected a request by Judas Priest,
    (I think that was who) to play there.  The Aerosmith shows also
    had to go through a bit of deliberation to get approved.

    Mansfield residents (great woods) have been complaining of the noise
    concerts generate.  Try going in the parking lot when a concert
    is going on.  You can't hear a damn thing.
    
    Sullivan Staduim has been rejecting requests for concerts for years
    because the town votes no.  Who the hell is the town to say.  I
    want to know how a concert could ever get as roudy as the patriots
    games that are held there.
    
    The thing that P!sses me off the most is the residents who complain
    that moved in knowing that the stadium was there.  Tough!

         Cthulhu is an Elder God (created by H. P. Lovecraft) which
         appears often as a humanoid figure, wearing a black cape, but

If'n I hear it correct...

The intro and solo are different.  The intro uses ascending
arpeggios, ending with those harmonics and then into the
mosh...

The solo, however, consists of descending arpeggios, and ends
on a back-and-forth thing where he hammers the 3 notes on one
string, then goes down a string and back and forth, then does
it again another string down, back-n-forth.  I'm not 
qualifying these statements by saying I've worked the song out,
but I'm playing it in my head now.  It's really loud, too....

It's not exactly the same as VH's [Eruption, et. al] method of
tapping furiously with the right and pulling off insanely with
left, not is it like Mr. Rhoad's four-note [S.Solution] things.

...but that's not important right now; I just thought I'd vent
my loquacity (girls, avert your eyes, please).

    I've seen a few live bootlegs of Metallica at record conventions
    held in Boston every few months.  Some of the recordings are on 
    tape and some are on vinyl.  What ones are you looking for?

    It's starts by tapping and pulling the D (3rd fret) to an open B
    and F (6th fret) ala EVH.

    I guess Metallica has another video cassette available.  Yesterday's 
    Calendar magazine listed Metallica's "Two of One" cassette as #6 in 
    the Boston area.  Anybody know more about it?  Which versions of "One",

    Good guess... Two of One has a brief introduction by Large Oilrig,
    in which he explains the background to the song. Then there's the
    full version, complete with excerpts from the Dalton Trumbo film,
    followed by the cut down "jamming" version with just the shots of
    the band playing in a warehouse.
    
    The video has been out in the UK for a couple of months, so I would
    guess it has been available in the states for longer than that.
    Definitely worth buying.

    While you're looking...you can pick it up occasionally at Strawberries
    (in the New England area) or Newbury Comics (also in N.E.).  There were
    some cool bootlegs at Headlines in North Conway, NH (no, really, I was
    there for the records.)  Also look in Nashua, they get some really cool
    rare vintage LPs and CDs.  A little pricey, but definetly worth it.
    
    BTW, they made the video out of fans home footage because they wanted
    that raw feel, and if you ask me, it is really raw! :-)  It's pretty
    cool.
    
    I saw them in Manchester and in Worcester.  They were *SO* f**king
    loud!  Both times I left with my ears ringing for two days!  The thing
    about Manchester is that it was outside- and I left with my ears
    ringing!  I was at least 200 yards from the stage and I had to scream
    at my friends to talk to them.  Hello Manchester!  No sleep for you!
    
    The Cult was definetley a bitchin opener for Metallica.  They were
    better at the Centrum.  They were wicked into it and you could tell. 
    I was afraid they were going to be laid back...that didn't happen.

    where he explains what the One video is about.  Then they show the

           The Manchester Union Leader is very conservative and also famous 
       for publishing letters from readers.  I think they publish letters 
       without reading them.  Take, for example, this from August 12.
       
       RESEARCH FINDS "EVIDENCE" OF SATANISM
       
       To the Editors: Mayor Emile Beaulieu is right about potential
       Satanic messages in the music and lyrics of the heavy metal band
       Metallica.  Since the night of the concert, I have conducted
       exhaustive research and found no less than three substantiations
       of the mayor's allegations on the bands four albums.
       
       When the song "Fade to Black" from the "Ride to Lightning" album
       is spun backwards at high speed while the listener stands on his
       head meditating, the message "Santa is coming to town" can be
       heard between the second and third verses.  This is an obvious
       reference to Satan in that the band misspelled the crucial word,
       placing the ever important letter "n" in the middle instead of at
       the end.  Both are men dressed in red, so we can understand
       Metallica's confusion.
       
       Even more ominous is the cassette version of the recent "one"
       single.  When played on s Sony Walkman with the headphones placed
       over the eyes instead of the ears, visions of an Iowa chicken farm
       conjure into view.  Broken eggs are scattered about the hay floor
       as the chickens cackle away.  Obviously a metaphysical display of
       the pagan cult "chicken dance" ritual, popular with hedonists of
       Medieval times.
       
       The final Satanic instance I discovered was from the compact disc
       of their "Master of Puppets" album.  When the disc is placed in a
       microwave oven set on high power for ten minutes, sparks dance
       from the metal as the disc begins to melt.  Evidently, the
       microwave radiation purges the discs of other-worldly influences,
       this making them safe for the teenage listener.  Unfortunately,
       the process also renders them unplayable and is a potential
       health and safety hazard for the concerned parent attempting to
       purge the child's compact disc collection.
       
       It seems the mayor is not so ignorant after all.

    KILL 'EM ALL by Metallica was picked as no. 30-something, because
    it set the tone/introduced that genre of speed metal to the U.S.

    Kill 'Em All Rocks!  No one gives that album enough credit.  That is
    the most raw, kick-in-the-whatever hell bent nylon something or other
    album!  Mustaine was not on the album.
    
    He has some tunes on RTL that he wrote, and was trying to get control
    of.  That is still my favorite album, although Pastor of Muppets is
    really close.
    
    The best tune by them is Battery.  There is no single song ever in the
    history of the world that kicks more a$$ than that song.  Every time I
    hear those chords at the end and in the middle (you know what I mean) I
    just have to flip out because it rules.

    can find the original anywhere, and it is on Elektra now, (with Am I Evil 
    and Blitzkreig.  Those songs were originally the B-side of Creeping Death)

    	L: One night in Worcester, MA, the intro to "One" was about
    	   15 minutes long because Kirk couldn't get his rig to work
    	   and James kept playing the opening four notes over and over
    	   until it just became like a comedy.  It was really silly,
    	   but not too much other stuff happened in the chaotic
           negative department.  We had an incredible crew that most
           of that together.
    
    	M:  With the tough, the video out this year, and your 
    	    appearance on the Grammie's, do you notice people 
    	    recognizing you more?
    	L:  One of the things I'm most happy about with Metallica's
    	    success is that's it's been a very gradual thing.  So
    	    yeah, a few years ago a few people noticed us, then a 
    	    couple years ago, more people noticed us and now even more
    	    people notice do, but it's not like all of a sudden I can't
    	    walk down the street because I'm being chased by 30 guys
    	    with pens in their hands.  I think it's very healthy for
    	    your attitude when things happen slowly and steadily, instead
    	    of overnight.  You don't lose contact with the street.
    	    You don't lose contact with yourself.
    
    	M:  Plans for 1990 besides doing your house?
    	L:  ....if you want a rough outline the way I see it:  we'll
    	    probably start writing some songs in January, February,
    	    maybe go in the studio by the summer, hopefully have a
    	    record ready by Christmas, then we'll start all over in
    	    1991, go tour and do another 8 thousand shows and play
    	    in 500 cities people never heard of.  The bottom line
    	    is that this is Metallica and anything can change, we
    	    do things spontaneous and spur of the moment.

    I bought RIDE THE LIGHTNING over a year ago, but never really listened
    to it until yesterday, so this reply may have already been done.
    
    Has anyone ever thought that FADE TO BLACK sounds very much like

    I had just finished listening to VOLUME 4 and then put on Ride the
    Lightening on tape and it started with Fade To Black!  I think that
    it is the really distorted Riffing that makes me think that... only
    Tony Iomi never could or will play that fast!!!!

    Funny, I seem to have gotten turned on to Metallica in a different
    order than anybody else...
    
    AJFA was my first and is my fave... followed closely by:
    
    MOP
    KEA (Kill'em all)
    RTL
    The gazillian EP's they have (at least the ones I've heard) are
    mediocre at best...sorry....
    
    But I love the LP's !  Never a day goes by where I don't listen
    to/play  LOTS of Metallica.  Ask the guys in the band... ;^)

    I'm suprised. Nobody mentioned Metallica's Grammy Award for best metal
    performance for "One". I guess the voters decided that they were wrong
    about last year. I didn't watch the whole show but I did watch most of
    it and there was no mention of metal except the winners from earlier in
    the evening where they just listed the winners.

    	People were discussing it in other notes (Grammies/Mutterings).
    
    	They may have skipped over metal this year and let rap get noticed
    since it was the other way around last year.  Both were new categories 
    as of last year but metal had the spotlight.
    
    	Glad to see they didn't show up for the award... kind of a boycott
    maybe?  They probably had something better to do.... like clean their
    sneakers.
    
    	BTW, I think James' new 'do is cool.  He's into hardcore/punk....
    so a mohawk fits him fine.  It's still long in the back so he's got the
    best of both worlds.  Scott Ian is sporting the same lid.

    Z-Rock plays the sh*t out of "Master of Puppets", I've heard that song
    at lunch everyday this week. Actually if a radio station was gonna play
    the sh*t outta something I'm glad it's Metallica and not some LGTB(tm)
    song.

    all.Must say I was very pleased.By the way,I just started enjoying
    these guys,listened to four tapes the other day at my part time
    job.Kill'em'All,RTL,MOP.AJFA.Gotta go with MoP,this tape is the
    ballz(like you people didn't know this).And since I could only aford
    one tape this weekend I had to buy it,the rest of my cash go's
    to my anti-metal wife,we'll anti-Metallica,this makes me play it

    	Metallica has recorded a cover version of Queen's "Stone Cold
    Crazy" which will be released on an Elektra compilation album.  On
    the same project, Motley Crue will be playing a Tommy Bolin track.
    The album features bands on the label covering songs from the old
    label (Electra/Asylum).

     Are these guys'  music what's termed Thrash Metal?

    Personally, I don't think that Metallica are "Thrash Metal",  I think
    that bands like Slayer, Overkill, Helloween, etc, are "thrash",
    Metallica is "HEAVY Metal"..  IMO.

    I don't think Helloween are classed as thrash! Some of their older
    stuff is heavier, but the new stuff is sort of commercial.
                                                     
    This whole thing of who's thrash and who isn't is very subjective,
    nowadays, people are saying that Metallica aren't really thrash,
    a year or two ago they were considered to be the king of thrash.
    I'm not putting Metallica down (I love the band) but it seems that
    popularity and acceptance come hand in hand. They haven't got any
    softer, just more mature and better as musicians, and people who
    listen to their music (like you and I) have become some familiar 
    with the Metallica trademarks (that percussive muting of the low E 
    or A strings, the double bass fills, the bass lines following the 
    distorted power chords) that people just *know* the stuff and don't
    see it as particualy outrageous anymore (although its still damn
    good)..

                Slayer.   As far as speed, metallica doesn't even
                come close.   If  sure  there may be faster bands
                than slayer, but certainly  not  as tight or with
                albums that are as well  produced.    Speaking of
                which, aeren't they about due for an album???
                
                

    Speed metal bands are just that...rapid-fire tempos at the drop of a
    hat.  Metallica is NO speed metal band...their music grooves too
    much to be classified as speed metal!  There are many bands out there
    that have 2 minute songs that are like 132nd note riffs...now that is
    speed metal...

    I knew already Metallica's albums excepted "Ride the lightning".
    Wow! What a discovery listening to it. It is clearly their best
    together with "Master of puppets". I even have a little preference for
    "Ride..". It is really (IMHO) one of the best heavy metal albums ever
    and I put it on my very short list of new CDs to buy.

    The date is 29th of MAY and i've just seen Metallica at Wembly Arena
    , also i've just read an interview with Kirk Hammett. He himself said
    he laughed when he heard the rumour that he had left. So can everyone please
    change the subject of kirk leaving the band. By the way does anyone
    have any info on metallica's equipment they use as i am very

Kirk uses a Yamaha SPX90II and Mesa Boogie MkII amps...Or so I read in some 
back issue last night...  also, he uses Fernandez copies and a Jackson.

    And Kirk also uses ESP guitars and a Gibson Flying V and the ADA 
    MP1, and Hetfield uses ESP Explorer copies, Gibson Explorers and 
    Steinberger basses (yup, he plays bass when he and Kirk jams).

I`ve just been thinking about the NO LIFE `TIL LEATHER demo tape.If
    i remember correctly,it had a song called THE PRINCE-am i right
    in thinking this? if so,is it an instrumental?

    In reply to "CAPT COOK", I also saw Metallica on the Friday at the 
    Marquee. To tell the truth I thought it was OK but nothin' special. 
    They were on for I guess about thirty minutes and played solid, but 
    gave very little to the crowd who in return gave very little back
    (I guess you must have been the exception Capt.). Don't get me wrong, 
    it was Ok but nothin' more. I suppose it was one venue they'd never
    done so they decided to pull this stunt for the crack of it. In my mind
    they still havn't done the Marquee, which can, because of its size give
    a great atmosphere to a gig. I guess it was just over half full and the
    bars seemed busier than the front stage! For Metallica that's sad. Sorry 
    to be a downer 'cos I know things like 'Metallica playing the marquee - 
    unbilled' are what legends are made of (especially if you were there), 
    but it really was nothin' to write home about.

    Getting back to my original point,i think if you were a true METALLICA
    fan (such as myself-7 yrs down the line),then this would be a truly
    memorable gig,(and it is-for me).
    
    I may be wrong,but i would guess that Beserkhead and his band of
    merry metal men aren`t true METALLICA fans,but went to the gig in
    search of,(in his words) Babes,Beer,fast packed out concerts.
    
    That is not what this particular gig was all about(Not that there
    is anything wrong with the above!). It was a night of great music,
    and for me,that was enough.
    
    Maybe next time,Beserkhead,may i suggest a Glam Rock band would
    be more in your taste?!

    I wasn't at the gig but i've followed Metallica over the years. They're
    one of the great heavy bands to come out of the eighties and I have no
    intention of fogetting them and moving into "Glam Rock"! I think what 
    "Beserkhead" had to say was fair enough as far as it went. They
    obviously didn't get much of an audience reaction and for Metallica
    that's unusual. Captain's right about such a performance being
    memorable if for only because it was unusual. As for it being one of
    their greatest performances I would reserve judgement and say we can
    all exaggerate!

    Metallica play with a LOT of feeling ... true, it may be a bit "dark"
    sometimes ... but their music is very inspired even if the reasons are
    a bit negative.  And, if memory serves me correctly, they have never
    used the word "baby" in any of their songs.  A lot of bands base their
    entire career on that word ... I gotta give 'em a double thumbs up for
    that ...

	As far as "keeping a steady beat", Metallica DOESN'T keep a
	steady beat through their songs.  If you'd actually listen to
	some of their stuff, you'd realize that their arrangements are
	VERY complex ... changing the timing in the songs constantly.
	They're actually more of a "progressive thrash" band rather
	than a straight-forward thrash band.

	I'm not even going to bother asking you how many Metallica
	songs you've heard, because it's probably less than 2.

    separate issues.

    I suggest all of the Bon Jovi bashers or any other bashers check out
    note 99.72. I have... if you don't like Bon Jovi or Jon Bon Jovi don't
    use the Bon Jovi note.... Doing this will insure that no one is upset
    in the future...
    
    Also to those who still feel offended by my oppinion.. 
    You deserved what you got if you were bashing Bon Jovi or any other
    band..  "If you can't take the heat get out of the frying pan"
    I never asked for any trouble when I first started using notes..

    lyrics? A lot of Metallica's music tells a story... religious
    stories, human stories, stories about injustice, stories about
    drug abuse, stories about war, etc. etc. etc. Whether negative
    or not, it's definitely not senseless, and their lyrics are always
    intelligent.

    senseless, no.
    	And, you seem to think you're such a rebel for saying "Metallica

    You're not the first person in here that dislikes Metallica. Of course
    some noters make their "ONE hit wonder" remarks coming out of the
    closet when they don't feel they're alone, but other people have
    expressed dislike for Metallica, and a lot of the bands in here,
    Bon Jovi included.
    	Also, their music is technically challenging to musicians, compared
    with the Bruce Springsteen western-rock-twang  style that Bon Jovi
    uses often. It's NOT repetitive, like the way "Blaze of Glory"
    sounds so much like "Dead or Alive."
    	And, let's bury once and for all this concept of yours that only
    'good' music gets popular radio airplay. For someone so all-knowing
    about the music business (as seen in the 'they target their music to
    people that are 16 and over with driving licenses so they can get to
    the show' reply) HA HA HA (Editor's note) ...

    does this mean that Paula Abdul is more talented than Bon Jovi because

     Well since there is so much talk here about Metallica, I thought that
    I would add my opinion. First off I have seen Metallica three time so
    far. I think they give a great show. In all honestness though I would
    have to say that their albums are not at the top of my most wanted
    list. I think the lead singers voice is too raspy or something, anyhow
    I think his singing ability is lacking. As far as the music goes I like
    their sound, but I couldn't listen to more than an hour of it because
    IMO I think it sounds very monotomous(sp?). I not saying that they are
    bad and I would definitly see a live show of their again because to me
    it sounds better than their albums. It's just that to me the music is
    not deversified enough to keep me going wow! Most of the songs on their
    albums sound the same to me. Keep in mind that I said most. Anyhow all
    you Metallic heads are free to flame away. After all I'm just your
    average don't give a sh!t, subliminal listening fool of a noter.:>)

    All kidding/trouble making aside, Metallica does earn my respect
    as far as pioneering a new sound BUT I agree that their music does
    sound a lot alike from one song to another, IMO.
    
    The bottom line is:  To each their own taste, BUT here's my 
    OPINION.
    
    I guess James' singing is part of their (tm) but it does leave 
    something to be desired.  
    
    Lars: constant double bass during hard driving part does get tiring 
    after a while.  I do like drum parts in "One" before the change.
    I can be a big fan of double bass; "Highway Nights" by Great White
    has awesome feel to it.  Scott Rockenfeld does some of most amazing/
    tasteful drumming.  Neal Peart; enough said. 
    
    As far as Kirk's playing goes, I'm more interested by the rhythm 
    guitar; but not really the distorted parts.  Again, the beginning
    rhythm on "One" turns my crank. 
    
    RE: "Baby"  OK, I guess Led Zepplin's songs would be pretty much 
    void of vocals if you threw all those out.

    	These people seem to know ONE Metallica song.
    Care to guess which?
    This leads me to believe that they don't have a solid base to
    stand on and criticize Metallica's music, or to say that it's
    monotonous. No reference as to "this song sounds like that song"
    etc.
    	Basically, what I'm saying is, if it ain't played on KISS 108
    or one of the National so-called hard-rock syndicated shows, they

     Another fellow and myself were discussing my earlier reply about
    metallic. I never said I didn't like Metallica I told him that if you
    are at someone house or something and Metallica is playing sort of as
    background music that is when the sound of the music sounds the same.
    He said he agreed, Metallica is the kind of music that needs to be
    cranked and listened to when you want to do some serious head banging.
    Scary you should know me better than to think that I may have been

      I just read the last flurry of notes (I think about 45 of them).
    There's some serious temperment goin' on in here! I hope you all
    don't mind if I express MY opinion on these guys - you probably
    won't like it. It kinda goes like this - I've listened to these
    guys (ummm, six of their albums maybe- don't ask me the names of
    their albums 'cause I really couldn;t tell you), and no matter what,
    I just cannot stand their "music"(???). Same with the "words"(???)
    to their songs. Is this English. I have to laugh everytime I read
    them - and I have to read them just to understand what it is their
    "singing"(???). They just make absoluteley NO SENSE (the words that
    is - ahhh, the music doesn't make any sense to me either [and no,
    it's not that it's TOO complicated for me to understand - I majored
    in music]) to me. Now, I tell you everytime I read the lyrics simply
    because my nephew is into these guys big-time so everytime he's
    over (which is alot) he's got them playing on his Walkman. I,
    naturally or foolishly let him play them on my very loud stereo,
    thus I'm subjected to their music. I try to keep an open mind and
    give these guys a chance (there is one song I do like by them -
    it's the first song on who-knows-what album) and I really wish they
    would sound a little more like that one song (it's not the song
    ONE, I think that one is - well - awful is a kind word). Further,
    IMO, the "singer" is terrible. I could go on, but I gotta go.

    I have checked out Kill 'Em All and Garage Days.  A couple friends of 
    mine were/are Metallica freaks and they let me borrow the tapes.
    Obviously, I was not impressed.  
    
    You can't say that I've not heard enough of their material to be 
    giving valid criticisms.  Believe me, I've heard them all.
    
    One interesting phenomenon;  when provoked, you Metallica fans came 
    back with almost exact same replies/accusations that those JBJ fans

Metallica to Record with Bob Rock
 
Metallica's Lars Ulrich announced in late Sept.
that the band has decided to make a change of
producers, after having worked with Flemming Rasmussen
on each of the band's albums since "Ride The Lightening".
Metallica will record their next album with Bob Rock,
reknowned for his work with Motley Crue, The Cult,
and Bon Jovi.
 
Metallica's new material, most of which is complete
and ready to be tracked, is "a little more to the point"
than some of the band's more recent work, according to
Ulrich. "It's still got the heaviest f*cking riffs,
but's it's just not so busy. We did [...AJFA] and it
sold 4 million copies around the world and it was really
successful...and it would have been very easy to make a
..."Justice2", but there wouldn't be a challenge in that
because we've already done that."
 
The band will enter a Los Angeles studio with Rock on
October 6th. According to Ulrich, an open-ended amount
of time has been booked at the studio, and it is up
in the air as to when the album will be completed, let
alone released.

    ....For Metallica - whose 2:12 version of "Stone Cold Crazy" is about a
    quarter of their usual song length - it was far easier to record a
    track than to choose it.  "We rehearsed for ten minutes and recorded in
    five minutes," says Ulrich.  "We didn't really *do* anything to it, we
    just played it."  Although the sing is extremely rough in its original
    version, Ulrich isn't quite ready to cite Queen as speed-metal
    pioneers.  "Queen were not a particular influence on Metallica
    whatsoever.  But I don't think there are very many people in the
    heavy-rock circle today that really realize how heavy and cool some of

    A LABEL CELEBRATES ITS HERITAGE - Forty years of Elektra music, from
    Josh White and Tom Paxton to Metallica and the Cure
    
    
    The members of Metallica were in the midst of an American tour last
    summer when they learned that Elektra Entertainment, their label, was
    planning an unusual fortieth-anniversary project.  Bob Krasnow,
    chairman of Elektra, had conceived of a "living memorial" to the
    label's history - an album on which current Elektra artists would
    interpret songs from the company's past.
    
    By the time Metallica began to choose a song to cover, however, the
    plans for *Rubaiyat:  Elektra's 40th Anniversary* were well under way. 
    The thrash-metal kings wanted to do a Queen song, but They Might Be
    Giants had dibs on "We are the Champions."  The group thought about
    recording a track by the little-known hard-rock band Riot but rejected
    the choice as too predictable.  Metallica then considered Tom Waits but
    couldn't find the right song.  The group asked for the Doors or the
    Stooges, but both had long been claimed.  Running out of options, the
    band even discussed a power-rock version of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car."
    
    "We were left with either covering a John Zorn song, or the latest from
    40,000 Maniacs, or whatever the hell they're called," says Metallica
    drummer Lars Ulrich.  "So we did something we don't often do.  We said,
    'Look, we want to f*cking cover Queen, or we're not gonna be on this
    thing.'"  No problem.  They Might Be Giants had switched to a Phil Ochs
    song, which allowed Metallica to record "Stone Cold Crazy," from

    original, but I'm sure it sounds nothing like it!  If Rob Rock had

    Why the hell would they want Bob Rock? I'm sure the guy is talented,
    but producers fuse their style into the band's music that they're
    managing. WOuldn't they want someone they admire? Have they lost
    their taste for the grungier side of heavy metal, or are they

    and sh*t like that?!
    
    I will be quite upset. I liked AJFA, but it may just  have paved

After trying since few months to like "And justice for all", finally I deleted
it from my collection. I think the replacement will be probably Anthrax's 
"Among the living". I keep with my best CDs "Ride.." and "Master..". I wait for
the new CD but if it's a continuation to AJFA (as Lars Ulrich told in Metal 
Hammer) I doubt that I'll like it.

    I don't think Metallica will go pop (maybe rap :-)). But what I wish is
    that they stop from self contemplation and release something to match
    their best creations (RtL and MoP). Lars Ulrich has declared in Metal
    Hammer that most of the thrash bands are Slayer clones and I think this
    proves he has lost contact with the musical reality. Annihilator and
    Forbidden (to name only two) are as creative and powerful as Metallica
    in its best days (RtL/MoP time). Wake-up Metallica.

    I think Annihilator will overtake Metallica on all fronts.
    I think that while they HAVE the musical ability to play
    "up to snuff" with the likes of Annihilator, I don't think 
    they will.  Annihilator is more technical, tighter, and ballzier

    Oh come on, I like Annihilator too (they are hardly out of my player)
    but they are not yet up to the quality of Ride the Lightning!  IMO the
    best Metallica album.
    
    Metallica still have a lot of power and can thrash (pun intended) the
    @rse off of most sound alike bands that are around today!

    RtL is huge but Annihilator's "Alice in hell", "Never..." and
    Forbidden's "Twisted into form" all match RtL in creativity, skills and
    punch (IMHO). Wargasm's "Why play around" is also very close.
    Slayer and Anthrax have both released top class albums last two years
    (Slayer - SoH,SitA). And they don't need to be compared to Metallica.
    The worst thing is that bands like Testament and Flotsam and Jetsam
    followed the line opened by the diluted AJFA (I don't like F&J's last
    album at all). While the guitars are as strong as ever in Metallica the
    rhytm unit has lost of its speed and tightness (maybe it was a
    commercial decision after all).
    I don't like to compare bands but sometimes this is useful (for the
    less known bands).

    like the music a lot I don't think it is like RTL at all. Its like

Metallica is currently recording the successor to 1988's...And Justice For All

of three-time producer Flemming Rasmussen with noted commercialhard rock
studio wizard Bob Rock, coupled with a change in recording approach and
a shift in styleistic direction, are all affecting Mealllica's basic structure.
We spoke with guitarist Kirk Hammett shortly after Metallica began recording
at One on One Studios in LA, hoping to shed some light on the progressof
album %5.
GW. What led to your decision to replace Flemming Rasmussen with Bob Rock?
KH. Flemming was always more of an engineer than a producer.  He helped us get
sounds we were satisfied with, and through time we established a rapport,
which made working on records with him very easy.  But after doing three
albums with him, we figured it was time for a change.  I had always wondered
what it was like, working with big producers, and finally we decided to give
it a shot. I kind of liked how the Blue Murder and the Cult albums sounded
and I especially liked the vocal sound on Motley Crue's last album-real
sharp, crystal clear. So we decided to give Bob Rock a call.
Another reason we decided to work with  a big-time producer as opposed to
an engineer is, being Meallica, we naturally have to do someting
different.  It helps make us the band we are.  We always have to experiment
a little bit, and working with a producer is different enought for us to want
to try it out.
 
GW.  But why run the risk of affecting a successful sound, just for the sake
of change?
KH.  It's really important to us to have every album be different.  We're
at a point in our career where we are established, both musically and from
an audience point of view.  It's just very important that we have something
different to offer the public.  I've watched bands that lose their ability
to change,  and the get really stagnant.  For the love of *our* band,
I don't ever want us to come to that situation.  It's bad for us, bad for
the fans.
 
GW.  Metallica has always retained its undergound trash metal roots.  Did it
concern you that Bob Rock is primarily a commercial hard rock producer?
KH.  People have come up to us and said, "So, is your next album gonna
sound like Slippery When Wet?" We're not going to change our approach
just because Bob Rock is on board.  I mean, *c'mon.  What Bob did with
those other bands was to make them realize their potential; he brought
out the best in them.  It just so happended that those bands turned out
to be real commercial. The main thing is that Bob is good at squeezing
a good performance out of us.
 
GW.  How do you want the production of the new album to differ form that
of it's predecessor?
KH.  We're sill going to have that edge, we're still going to have that
aggression and that guitar sound. But we want a livelier sound.  We're
approaching it with more of a live attitude.  All four of us are playing
in the stuido, and that's radically different for us.  Previously, it was just
put together, piece by biece, in the studio.
 
GW.  I take it the new material is different?
KH.  It's very different. For one thing, these songs are not going to be
long and boring.[laughs] We've pretty much played out that long, epic
song- we've done that to the hilt.  This time we're doing songs that
get the point across a lot quicker.  The new material is simpler, but it;s
not like it's going to be three chords.  The riffs themselves have a degree
of technicality to them. but we don't have 50 techical riffs this time-
maybe one or two.  As a result, the songs are shorter also, and there will
be more of them.  The new album will absolutely cover the same amount
of time as the earlier ones.  We're not going to cheese out and make a short
album just because the songs are shorter.

    I heard on Z_ROCK last night that the album is almost done.
    
       The drum and bass tracks are done.
    
           " Right now they are working on vocals,solos and some production

              The name of the album is going to be titled "METALLICA".

    Actually it is isn't it? My friend believes he's using the acoustic
    drums, but it's just to trigger the sample. It sounds *too* clean.
    I also noticed in concert (hey Jesse, did I ever tell ya about the
    time I was almost on the floor for Metallica?) that when they did
    the song "one" that they kicked in either a tape or the trigger/sample
    crap for the double bass in the instrumental part. I couldn't believe

    Fron an engineers standpoint...you can take a real drum and have it
    sound OK, or sound good, or great if it's a good piece of equipment and
    is tuned properly.  BUT, what is that real drum won't give you  the
    sound you're looking for?  What if you want to make some dude who has a
    $50.00 drum set sound good, cuz your name is on the  project?  I have
    NO trouble with taking the input signal off the drum tracks and having
    them trigger digital samples from another source.  The dude is STILL
    playing the drums, but the sounds are coming from somewhere else.
    
    Do you like Tommy Lee?!?  ALL his acoustic drums do NOTHING!!!  They
    are ALL outfitted with triggers, which feed into a digital sample
    source, which feed into noise gates, which feed into a couple of 
    Lexicon 224-X digital reverb units.  Tommy Lee gets a great drum sound,
    AND he can spin his drum upside down and every which way.  In rock and
    roll, sometimes you gotta make compromises!
    

     I was speaking from a musicians veiwpoint not an engineer.
           I was also looking from a live point of veiw not in the studio.
    Just about everybody does it......I just don't like it!

    I'm right behind you Frizdude, and so is my drum teacher. When you 
    learn drums you make a choice, compromise and use electronics, or 
    don't and play TRUE acoustic drums, not triggered samples. Even if 
    I ever make it big I will never use it. If the drummer in question 
    knows his drums, he can get the tone he wants. I can't tell you how
    many good drummers I've seen that don't even know the simplest things
    like how to set up your kit, how to tune heads, and how to get the 
    most out of seat/hihat and cymbal position.

    would want me to play electronic drums for the music that I do.

    someone plays a sample of a piano or a real piano, the sound is similar

    	Yes, but getting into details, a drummer will only sound as good
    	as the set he's playing on. Sure Louie Bellson could play it real
    	well, but he couldn't be the best he could be on the $10 special.

    	and I'd probably do it. I'm always open to making them sound
    	as good as possible, but the first line of offense shouldn't
    	be falling to sampling. It's solves A problem, but not the REAL

    	to hear me say that. My style of playing doesn't allow them, so
    	I don't use 'em although I respect their applicability in other
    	forms of music.

    I this the statements "my style of playing doesn't allow them" is
    a very limiting statement.  I mean, a HM guitarist could say "I
    can only use Jackson guitars for that ultra heavy thrash sound", 
    but in actuality, Jazz guitars can be used for rock.  See Nuge,
    Izzy from GnR, Jan Akkerman, Rik Emmett and others for examples.
    
    To me, instruments and approaches in HM and music in general are
    not that black and white.

    
     My .02$ for all you other drummers who won't play anything but your
    acoustic sets....wake up your missing out on alot of fun. I have played
    acoustic sets for as many years as some of your ages. Why should all
    the new electronic stuff belong to guitarists and keyboard players?
    I love the stuff. I also appreciate a real drummer and one that posses
    technical expertise. But I think the whole thing is great and can
    really open up alot of new doors for drummers.

    	and I don't like them, although I can slay on 'em! They inhale!
    	If I was playing disco music, sure. Metal? no way. Never. It
    	sounds like crud. Also my style of playing is better suited

    Makes sense to me!  I saw both AJFA and Girls, Girls, Girls tours, and
    if Lars and Tommy Lee Used samples, I sure couldn't tell!  It's when
    electronic drums are used and they have that 'electronic' sound, that I
    don't like.  I wanna hear a real drums punch!  Or a good fascimile.
    Drum machines shouldn't be used as "cheating tools" to play something
    automatically to make it easier on yourself either.  Computers have
    only a limited use in music I think.  Mainly for digital effects.

    I'm new on here by the way, but Metallica are definately the best.

    Any ideas on the sound of the new Album (Too lazy to scan back) -

    From what I've heard they want to roughen the sound a bit again. So at
    least back to the Puppets style I should think.
    
      Apparently they thought that the sound in Justice was a little
    over-produced (which I tend to agree with) especially in the drum
    sound. They also thought that the drums were far too prominent in the
    music and want to mix them out a little bit more.
    
    	Anyway, if they do go back to the Puppets style I shall be well
    pleased 'cause it's my favourite of the four main releases.
    
      Anyone heard the Garage days revisited EP. I've got the Re-revisited
    EP, but the first one seems very rare because I cannot find it in any
    of the official release listings.

I've heard yesterday very little of a new Metallica single (to be released) on
MTV. From what I've heard it was a bit like AJFA but it was too little to have
a real ideea. If the new one is like AJFA I'll avoid it (I got rid of my AJFA).

    I don't see why everyone hates AJFA simply because it doesn't sound
    exactly like metallica's other tapes! I have been listening to
    metallica for about 5 years, and I liked all of their tapes that I
    have (garage days re-revisited, MOP, Kill'em All, RTL), and I also
    like And Justice For All. Heavy metal isn't the only type of music
    I listen to, so I was able to accept AJFA as a good piece of music,
    even though it didn't sound exactly like their other tapes. It seems
    narrow minded to me to say a tape sucks because it was a little
    different than the norm for a group.

    I agree with you Jeff, I think AJFA was a great tape.  Personally I
    liked Puppets a little better, but that doesn't mean AJFA sucked or
    anything.  It wasn't *that* different for them, it was immediately
    obvious that it was the same band that did RTL or MOP to me.

I think AJFA is best enjoyed by fans. I tried to listen it quite much (I 
bought the CD at that time) but I cannot tell why I never succeeded to like it.
I would not say that it's a bad album but I just don't find it as impressive
as RtL and MoP (I have to say that I don't enjoy very much "Kill 'em all" 
either). I'm not a Metallica fan to which I prefer Slayer, Annihilator, 
Forbidden, Wargasm and Coroner.

    I think AJFA is excellant,the first time I heard it I thought it was
    crap but now it seems to have grown on me,the only song thats a bit

    You know that song on AJFA (the name escapes me) with all of the harps,
    etc; it starts off sounding like a classical song and then progresses
    into heavy metal... anyways, I sampled the part of that song where you
    can here in the background "When a man lies, he murders a part of the
    world.. etc" and recorded it as my answering machine message. You
    should have seen the messages people left. "you should turn the music
    down; I can barely hear the sound of your voice over that loud music".
    (as if my voice actually sounds like that!)

    I am sampling AJFA yet again.  Prompted most of all by seeing the full
    length video for ONE on HBBall!  I think that it is better this time
    around and maybe a wee bit underrated!  Buck is right tho, the songs
    are a mite slower than they need to be!  However, I can't help thinking
    that the main reason that AJFA has been slammed is the fact tha RtL and
    MoP are so brilliant!  Standing by itself AJFA is a pretty good album!
    
    By the way, does anyone know if the video for ONE is taken from a film
    or was it made for the song?  Seems a bit involved for the latter!

    Quick cuts are great, but THAT was ridiculous. Next time it comes

    new releases.  Metallica's "Metallica" was scheduled for an August 13th
    release date.  That may have changed though.
    
    	I thought "Enter Sandman" was ok (I love AJFA!).  I didn't like the
    spoken "now I lay me down to sleep part"... kinda slowed up the whole

    I disagree with your statement that it's bad to not like music once
    it gets popular. There are a lot of songs that I used to love but can't
    listen to anymore because the radio and MTV picked them up and 
    overplayed them, transporting the music I like into the bubble-gum
    chewing big hair mall-rat teeniebopper crowd. G & R, for instance:
    I used to love Appetite for Destruction until it made it to the
    bubblegum sector; then Sweet Child Of Mine never sounded quite as
    good when you had to hear it on the radio all the time. I didn't
    like "One" either for the time it was being overplayed; once it
    left the teenie crowd, I began to like it again. 
     
    There is nothing wrong with not liking music once it becomes
    widespread and overplayed!

    Call of Klutu ROOLZ!

    I told this story about a zillion years ago in here and I'll tell it
    one more time.
    
    Let's say you know of this cool place to party. The place roolz and you
    and your buds love it. Gradually you begin to tell more and more people
    about it, and more and more people show up. You still have a good time
    but now that more people know about it and also have a good time. You
    can feel bitter cuz now more people like your party spot, or you can
    have a good time and party with everyone. Plus all this time you are
    out scouting new party spots anyway. Perhaps one of your new spots will
    become THE party spot, mebbe it won't measure up to the party crowd.
    Just because your party spot has more people who like to go there don't
    mean you can't still enjoy it.

    Yeah, I think that *was* how we met, Mike!  
    
    I was also a late fan.  I never thought I liked the real heavy stuff, I
    even said that in my original intro note in this notesfile, but people
    were talking them up so much in here I had to check it out.  Alan Starr
    taped a couple of songs from Master of Puppets onto the end of
    something else he was sending me and I was hooked.  
    
    I remember listening to that tape and thinking that the music was like
    *total* intensity!  I'd never heard such intense music.  Problem was
    that Welcome Home (Sanitarium) was CUT OFF at the end on the tape Alan
    sent me and it drove me nuts wondering how the song ended.  I bought
    the Master of Puppets tape the next day!  
    
    I have all their albums (with the exception of an ep or two) and like
    them a lot.  I don't listen much anymore because I kind of burned
    myself out on them back then.  I liked AJFA a lot, though MoP is still
    my favorite.

    out and buys it straight away, and then the sales drop off quite quick

    However, it's a hell of alot simpler than most of their other stuff, I

Metallica put on a before-the-tour show this past Friday (Aug 2) in a local
theatre -- The Pheonix, in Petaluma CA.  Here's a review:
 
Oh, and nobody is going to believe me when I tell you what happened during
Breadfan.  Fine - I have 700+ witnesses.  And I don't really CARE if you
believe me, because *I* saw it happen!   (More in a sec)
 
The Venue
---------
The Pheonix is a movie theatre -- and a small one, at that.  If all the chairs
were there, there probably would be 20 rows of 20 chairs on the bottom level,
and 15 rows of 20 chairs in the balcony level.  They removed all but 10 rows 
of chairs in the bottom, and left the balcony intact.  
 
There were around 700 people there, I would estimate (probably high).. 300
in the balcony, and around 400 on the floor.  (The balcony was the best place
to be, unless you wanted to mosh -- a clear view of the stage, and only about
40-50 feet away)
 
Security was pretty tight -- they let people mosh, of course, but were always
at hand.  I didn't see ANY fights.
 
The Opening Act
---------------
"Black Crowes" - a very forgettable local band.  Their lead guitarist, though,
played the cleanest, smoothest, fastest arpeggio sweeps I've EVER seen,
professional or otherwise.
 
They were woefully ignored, though.
 
Metallica
---------
After a LONG (45-60) minute intermission, featuring music from Alice in Chains
over the PA :-), Metallica took the stage.

	This one was incredible.  One off the new album.  Awesome.  And
	to all the people saying that Metallica has wimped out -- wait until
	you see them do this song LIVE. They played this one with as much
	energy as I've seen them do ANY song.
 
Creeping Death - 
	ZZZZZzzzz.  Pretty vanilla.  They didn't seem to be in sync for
	this one.  (Especially the die-die-die sequence)
 
Harvester of Sorrow - 
	Best I've seen them do this one.  They played it much slower than
	the album.. and it turned out much heavier.  Awesome.
 
Fade to Black -
	Great.  As this song always is.
 
Sad but True -
	Another off the new album.  A 1/2-paced GRIND.  Hard to describe,
	but akin to Orion (the Instrumental off Puppets) played at 1/2 speed,
	and with lyrics.  :-)
 
Master of Puppets
	They were into this one.  Perfect execution, especially in the
	E-F-B E-F-C E-F-C# E-F-C E-F-B-B stuff.. (Sorry.. Guitarists will
	know what I'm talking about)
 
Seek and Destroy
	Jason sang this one.  Sounded good, too.
 
For Whom the Bell Tolls
	Heavier & slower than the album. Awesome.  Jason really shined 
	on this one.
 
One
	What can I say, they blew this one.  Kirk's solo in the beginning
	of the song was confused, and James broke a string during the
	fast E-E-E-E-E-E stuff. (or at least went out of tune -- he changed
	guitars immediately afterward).  Kindof a bummer, I like this song. :-)
	Jason & Lars held up the rest pretty well, tho.
 
Whiplash
	A welcome surprise.  Awesome speed in this one -- in a few of their
	songs they had slowed down to a heavy grind, but not here.. Fast and
	furious.  Jason & James shared the singing.  I'm pretty sure I heard
	"Dickrash" at least once.. :-)
 
At this point, they left the stage.. The lights edged up, but the audience
knew that an encore was on the way, so they stuck around.  Only took around
30 seconds.. :-)
 
Last Caress
	Guest singer:  the guitarist from Faith No More (don't remember
	the name.. He was also in Bill & Ted's Bogus Movie)  Pretty short--
	they didn't do Green Hell.  :-)
 
Am I Evil?
	WONDERFUL.  James missed his que by a mile (after kirk's D-G, A-D,
	E-A harmonic bit)  but the rest was driving. 
 
Battery
	Another surprise.  Fast and furious.
 
And they left the stage again.  They came out a few moments later, with
towels and water bottles, waving at the audience.  Lars threw a few
drumsticks to the front rows, and kirk threw water on everyone.  Then
Jason seemed to get an idea -- the four of them huddled for a minute
or so, then Lars stepped up to the mike and said, "We don't know what the
fuck to play!"  James stepped up too, and said, "What do you wannahear?!"
(I yelled "Sanitarium").  The people in front must have said "Breadfan",
'cause James said "Shit, I don't remember the words to that one.  Anyone
know BREADFAN?"
 
Of course, the whole audience went "yeah!! Me! Me!"  James POINTED towards
the middle of the place and said, "You know the words?  Bullshit!... All right,
get up here!"
 
Security finally got the guy up to the stage (amid James' "C'mon, man!")
and...
 
Breadfan
	Guest singer:  Random dude from the audience.  He knew the words,
	too.  He was TOTALLY stoked -- danced around a bit, waved his arms,
	then sang.  James almost keeled over laughing.  BEST playing of
	Breadfan that I've ever heard -- they skipped the slow interlude,
	and played it HARD and FAST. The random-unknown-guy did a stage
	dive at the end.  
 
	James' comment:  "Don't give up your day job"
	Kirk's:  (to James) "Hey, you're out of a fuckin' job!"
 
And that was it.  They handed their guitars to some grunts, poured some
more water on the audience, and waved goodbye...  
 
The lights came up.

I've been to many many concerts & shows -- this one was the best, by leaps
and bounds.  [Don't take my little criticisms above too harshly -- they
put on an awesome show].  
 
It seemed to me that they REALLY enjoyed doing a small venue, to only a 
club-full of people.  Lord knows I'll be at EVERY show they put on around
here when they come back for the tour....  (3 months, James said)

    What's wrong with this picture?
    
    Either he's got the band name wrong or he's out of his mind, 'cause the
    Black Crowes aren't a "local band" to the San Francisco area (isn't
    that where Petaluma is?) and I've never heard either of their guitar
    players do a fast arpeggio sweep.  I don't honestly think either of
    them can, and even if they could it wouldn't fit with the kind of much
    they play very well anyway.
    
    In any case, I can't imagine the Black Crowes opening for Metallica
    anyway, what an awful mismatch if it were true!

    	I finally heard "Enter Sandman".  Not bad, but it's not all that
    	good when compared to their older stuff.  That horrible flange
    	effect is gone from the drums, but with that went their timing
    	changes and overall "punch".  It was a straight-ahead metal song
    	with alot of the Metallica "trademarks" missing.
    
    	I'll probably get the album anyways and hope for the best.

    Okay..  now here is what I can remember I will try to quote directly if

    By the by, Metallica is MTV's "Day in Rock" interview of the week.  The
    "Day in Rock" is on weekdays at 8:00 p.m.
    
    First off, Lars did most if not all of the talking..  They said they
    did the shows in California because they were "really out of shape"
    performing wise, and they had to get back into it again.  Mentioned
    they like to play in small theaters when possible.
    
    Said they usually do not like to release videos or singles either, but
    decided that "Enter Sandman" is an excellent song to do that with
    because it portrays "what they are into right now, which is a simpler
    and less complex style of music.  They think "Enter Sandman" is good
    for people to see what the album is like and the musical style they are
    into right now.
    
    They did the "Enter Sandman" video like they did because they beleive
    the song can have different interpretations.  They do not beleive a
    video should have everything written out and obvious.  They "hope it
    (the video) will make people have to think" and get their own ideas
    from it.
    
    The other night they had a listening party and gave away 19,000 tickets
    I think it was at Boston Garden?  or somewhere in Boston, just to
    listen to the new release.  Why they picked Boston only I have no idea. 
    MTV made some mention of it probably being the biggest listening party
    ever, etc.

They didn't. The listening party was held in NY, at Madison Square Garden.
The band didn't play, they weren't even there - they just played the album
through a huge PA system. All 19,00 tickets were given away via retail

    I saw "Enter Sandman" last night on MTV, my first Metallica vid.
    I was very impressed with the way they did the video and I really liked
    the music.  Now, if they changed their style like everyone here says
    they did, what the hell did they sound like before???  I don't really
    like speed bands or thrash bands for that matter.  I like the real
    heavy, heavy metal bands.  I think Alice In Chains has that heavy
    sound.  Anyway, I like the new Metallica song and if the rest of the
    album is the same, I'm buying it!!!

	Some people expect every album to sound nearly the same which can
	certainly get tiresome for a band to put up with such expectations.
	It could also be considered any easy way to continue pumping out
	albums but I give 'em credit for broadening.  I haven't heard it
    	all but this seems to be their direction.

	They seem to be coming across musically rather than being specialists 
	in their field.  As the simple title of the album suggests.  You
    	decide either because you like the music or you don't, not just 
    	because you always buy Metallica's or band X's material or for that
	matter the people who I won't buy their stuff may now listen.
	
	One nice thing about not having eMpTV is that I actually enjoy
	seeing it on occasion and remain just far enough behind the times, 
	you know, like drafting in auto racing.  
    
    	As for the video maybe you're supposed to watch it in a very bright
    	room or something, not in the dark. Some parts seemed to work but
    	for the most part....anyhow it's the music not the video that makes
    	us move around - or it should be.

	Anyhow if I can get to it I'll enter in some extracts from last weeks 
	NME (New Musical Express) article.  That is if there's any interest!

    plenty heavy enough to carry the Metallica name, just not as syncopated
    as previous stuff - which I like.  If this is a reflection of how the

    Enter Sandman really blew my mind the first time I saw/heard it!  It is
    hardly typical Metallica (suppose there are reverberations of ONE
    there, but otherwise).  If the rest of the album is as good as this
    track, then I guess it will rank alongside Ride the Lightning!  I will 
    definitely be buying this with my CD token, which I got several months

    I've been a metallica fan for around 4 years now. I finally saw Enter
    Sandman last night, and there was nothing in that video that I didn't
    like! It's definitely got that metallica sound (even though it seems
    like it is mixed differently), and the video is very creative.

    	I picked up the album last night, and listened to it once ...
    	every song all the way through, except for the 2 "ballads" that
    	I skipped 1/2 each.
    
    	First impression was YAWN.  Too "straight forward" to be Metal-
    	lica.  But as I listened, it wasn't too bad, but it was still
    	missing the typical Metallica ingredients like timing changes
    	[there were some there, but not enough], and lacked something
    	[which I'll call "kick" for lack of a better word].
    
    	"Enter Sandman" is the best, followed by "Holier Than Thou"
    	[which is probably the closest to "typical" Metallica that's
    	on this album] and "Sad But True".  Most of the album is too
    	slow, IMO, but still not bad.

    	As much as I dislike agreeing with GTI I must!  I'm usually not too
    	much for ballads but I liked  'em and as for the other tracks there
    	were definite points were things seem to be in low gear (not that
    	that's always bad - not nearly in the form of someone like Codeine
    	who I like but live - yaaaawnnn) but other times approaching high
    	gear (another but) it seemed to be a bit fragmented.  The one
    	song that I can't recall really 'kicked it both in vocals and
    	music...
    
    	With all the previous talk about the release I didn't realize it
    	was 62 minutes (plus, what a few seconds?) of music (-don't you
    	hate those shrink wrap stickers?).  
    
    	Overall I did enjoy it and what even helped more was the reasonable
    	$7.99 double LP and $10.99 CD price at Newbury Comics and Tower,
    	respectively.  {side-track - other than possibly local music and
    	maybe some blues it does look like Tower will reach their goal of
    	being vinyl-free by year end.  At least in Boston.  The import
    	record section is gone, the 'metal' is but a few bins, clearance
    	is rather big and not much of any interesting stuff there, blues
    	and local still okay, but local 7" as usual is still a mess.

    I agree that "Enter Sandman" and Holier than thou" But "My friend
    of Misery" Seems to grab me by the poo poo.
    
    It by far compares to RTL or MOP which were raw and hard. Looks to me
    Metallica have not sold out to more airplay but have moved forward
    with their music. Hetfield sounds pretty good in that ballad. I 
    was suprised.

    There is an interview with Kirk and James in the new issue of Guitar
    Player magazine.  They're the featured cover artists.
    
    I read it last night and it talks a lot about how the new album was
    recorded, their techniques and such.  No click tracks were used this
    time, as they had been on previous albums.  They made a special effort
    to give as much of a live feel to this record and begain using reverb
    again (they apparently hadn't since RTL).  Kirk has a new guitar rig
    that he said gives a much meatier sound.
    
    Also from some of the photos it appears that James is starting to lose
    his hair.  Won't be long before he's looking like Coop...  ;^)

     I bought it Mon. and have been listening to it for 2 days now. This
    is my favorite of theirs by far. I like RTL and MOP, but the production
    on this one has gone one step further than AJFA. I think it really
    sounds great. I think it has the heavyist sound than any of their other
    releases. It is different but has the unmistakable Metallica sound.
    The guitar work on "Nothing Else Matters" reminds me of "Orion" on
    MOP. Granted the tempo's are not as fast and furious as previous
    Metallica, but what an awesome sound! What can I say? I love it!

    it was okay also.

    I also bought it monday, and I love it. I am a die hard fan of
    Metallica and I would have paid for an lbum full of ballads. I don't
    think this is as good as RTL, but I think it compares with MOP and KEA.
    But I'd like to ask if anyone can tell me if it's Jason Newstes who
    sings the refrain on "The Unforgiven" it doesn't sound like Hetfield.

    now they just took a step back!  This album sounds too much like AJFA
    to me.  And it's not as intricate.  The songs are more simpler... less
    changes.  Which I guess is another way of saying the songs sound more

    like this album better than AJFA.  Not as much as RTL, MOP, & KEA
    though.  The word "die" is used less on this album for whatever thats
    worth.
    
    I think Kirk used the wha-wha on way too many songs.  His leads sound
    better without it I think.  Almost sounds like he's hiding behind it
    IMO.
     
    And finally, I don't recall there being any instrumental on this
    album... at least one doesn't stick out in my mind.  What happened to
    the great works like Call of Ktulu, Orion, Anasthesia, and To Live Is To
    Die (which was almost an instrumental) ?

    What's everybody's problem about this ?  I've scanned through it, and
    now I'm taping it to put in the truckster, and so far, I *love* it !
    The crunch is there - the power is definitely there - the ballads are
    there.  True, there's none of the mega_syncopation that came to be a
    Metallica trademark, but that's old hat now.  This CD is just plain
    straight ahead HEAVY !  Some parts remind me of early Sabbath, *the*
    heaviest band known to mankind, past or present.

    I've listened to this tape since I bought it Monday, and I must say
    it definitely measures up to metallica! I'm sick of all of the losers
    who say this tape stinks. Just because metallica doesn't clone their
    last album every time they want to produce a new one; just because
    their sound grows with time doesn't mean they are screwing their fans.
    This one, in my opinion, is right up there with MOP and AJFA!
    
    IMHO the best songs are Enter Sandman, Sad But True, and the 2 ballads,
    The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters.
    
    BTW- Does anyone know if metallica will be touring in the states and
    when? When they do, are they going to be in the same lineup as they are
    currently doing in europe (metallica,ac/dc,q-ryche,motley crue,black
    crows)? That would be incredible!

    The thing you`ve got to remember about any Metallica product,is that
    it grows with repeated listenings.
    
    Even the "Garage Days Revisted" E.P. i thought was pretty crap on the
    1st listening. Now i think "Helpless" is one of the best songs they`ve
    done. Same with Master Of Puppets. It took AGES for me to get into
    that,but when i did i loved it.

    I too am glad Metallica  will never do a Metal/poser(rap) team up. I
    know they won't ever do it because I saw them on MTV. (Hah) 
    I love Anthrax, don't get me wrong, but with the way they talk and the
    way their e.p. went, I wouldn't doubt if the band broke up and Charlie,
    Scott, and Frank formed a rap group. Anyway, even though this album is
    not as fast and may have a coupla ballads, I think everyone is missing
    thwe true point here... this is METALLICA. The Music is still good,the
    lyrics are still great, and their image is great too, as long as they
    don't sing about love, sex, and flowers, they're still # 1 in my book.
    And as long as the riffs aren't cute and popsie I'll continue to buy
    and love and relish every metallica album.

    I think it's just more of the direction their musical likes took them.
    It's still WAY to heavy for most radio stations - the intended audience
    was still their current fans, I think .. but hey, what do I know, right?

    I've heard it at 6am and in the late hours of night (Enter Sandman)
    
    It's just a matter of time until they play "Nothing Else Matters"
    all day long like "more than Words" Got a while back. I've even heard
    "Sad But True" on the radidio last week.
    
    FWIW Rolling Stone Gave the album 4 stars. They would have given it 5
    except for the one some "Don't tread on me" which is the only song
    I leave out of my programming sequence.

    "Nothing Else Matters" gets as much airplay here as "Enter Sandman".
    
    It's funny to hear you guys complain about bands selling out.  The
    Christian camp does the same with Stryper and others (i.e., Amy Grant).
    To me, they're just expanding their musical horizons more than just 
    paying the bills.

    I agree with .1008. Just because they have a ballad on their album, it
    doesn't make it sceam SELL-OUT. What about Fade To Black, when Ride the
    Lightning came out all my friends were saying things like. what a wuss
    song, and the same happened when One came out.I personally think the
    Fade To Black is one of their top 5 songs ever, if not # 1.

    It's true that Nothing Else Matters is a ballad and not a Power Ballad
    (By the way I have a tape that consists of just Power Ballads, if
    anyone's interested just say so.) but if you read the lyrics it sounds
    like this is some kind of tribute to fans that have never given up on
    Metallica, and will stay with them no matter what kind of songs they
    write. so that leaves out all you guys that don't like "Tread".

    bad thing ("there goes the neighborhood"), because POP is just a
    shortened version of POPULAR, so if Metallica is popular why shouldn't
    they be on the POP chart. Besides they entered NUMBER 1 as of today on 
    the ALBUM chart not the pop chart. Well anyway Enter Sandman is NUMBER 42 
    on the POP chart. Hey even if the album is a little, dare I say, softer
    than the previous, it will no doubt open new eyes to the previous 4.

    The first thing you notice about Metallica's new album is that is 
    *sounds* great.  The band's previous disc, ...*And Justice For 
    All*, seemed a model of hard-rock clarity and punch when it was 
    released in 1988.  Played back-to-back with *Metallica*, *Justice* 
    sounds almost thin; the new record's sonic textures and audio 
    depth of field are a revelation.
    
    But *Metallica* isn't simply a superspiffy engineering job.  Its 
    detail and dynamics are essentially *musical* in concept, part and 
    parcel of the arrangements, song structures and impact of 
    individual tracks.  The first few bars of the opening cut, "Enter 
    Sandman," tell the tale.  The song beings with the fade-in of a 
    chugging guitar riff.  As the riff rises to full volume,  ushering 
    in the rhythm section, and entirely different guitar texture, 
    sounding like a phased, finger-picked, electric twelve-string, 
    comes in under and *behind* the primary riff.  All this subtlety 
    draws the listener in, focusing attention.  When drummer Lars 
    Ulrich enters, the whack of his first snaredrum accent seems to 
    jump right out of the record and into the middle of the room.  By 
    the time you're half a minute into *Metallica*, musicianship, 
    arrangements and engineering are working hand in  hand to define 
    the parameters of a sonic space that the entire disc will claim as 
    its field of interaction.
    
    In stylistic terms, *Metallica* is about diversity.  *Justice*, 
    and to a lesser extent in 1986 breakthrough album *Master of 
    Puppets*, connected one song to another with related themes and 
    riff structures; these were unified works, almost thrash-metal 
    concept albums.  Each of the twelve songs on *Metallica* stands on 
    its own.  The multipart musical structures that paced the much 
    longer compositions on *Justice* haven't been abandoned, but the 
    forms have been telescoped into songs in the four- to six-minute 
    range.  Whenever a passing musical moment reaches out and grabs 
    you, it's a pretty safe bet that you won't be hearing it again 
    until the next time you play the album.
    
    When a band slaps an eponymous title on its fifth album, some sort 
    of redefinition is implied.  And in fact, *Metallica* is a long, 
    long way from the charged momentum and skullf(ck imagery of the 
    early material created with original lead guitarist Dave Mustaine 
    (now the general of Megadeth) and the late bassist and band spark 
    plug Cliff Burton.  Several of the songs on *Metallica* are 
    downright gentle.  "Enter Sandman," possibly the first metal 
    lullaby, does advise the child it addresses:  "Hush little baby, 
    don't say a word/And never mind that noise you heard/It's just the 
    beasts under your bed/In your closet, in your head."  But the 
    song's delicately layered guitar textures and the unmistakable 
    empathy in James Hetfield's vocals signify an abiding affection.  
    "Nothing Else Matters" doesn't even pretend to tough it out.  It 
    is hardly an MTV lite-metal ballad, but he soaring vocal harmonies 
    on the chorus, the delicate acoustic- and electric-guitar 
    interplay between Hetfield and Kirk Hammett and the way Ulrich 
    deftly blends his orchestra chimes and cymbals into the guitar 
    harmonies make it a ballad all the same.  Hetfield's lyrics offer 
    a key to the more personal, directly emotional drift of the album 
    when he sings: "Never opened myself this way/Life is ours, we live 
    it our way/All these words I don't just say/And nothing else 
    matters."
    
    Several songs on *Metallica* seem destined to become hard-rock 
    classics.  "Wherever I May Roam" blossoms from a sitarlike opening 
    into a stomping but lyrical power-chord rocker, with Jason 
    Newsted's chordal bass voiced with the guitars to provide that 
    unmistakable Metallica crunch.  When Hetfield sings, "My body lie, 
    but still I roam," he echoes, perhaps unconsciously, one of the 
    bluesman Robert Johnson's most indelible images.  Structurally 
    diverse but containing a transcendently melancholy and melodic 
    chorus, the song sounds like an anthem in the making, but an 
    anthem kept to a human scale.  "The Unforgiven," "My Friend of 
    Misery" and "Sad but True" seem likely to have a comparable 
    staying power.  And Metallica doesn't neglect the head bangers, 
    the group's original constituency.  "Through the Never," "Of Wolf 
    and Man" and "The Struggle Within" are hard-edge and hard driving, 
    and even the prettiest songs forgo any hint of radio-ready 
    sweetening.
    
    Metallica is no longer the cutting edge of metal, as it was in the 
    beginning, but the band is expanding its musical and expressive 
    range on its own terms.  This can only be a positive step for a 
    group that is effectively bridging the gap between commercial 
    metal and the much harder thrash of Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth.
    
    *Metallica*'s only sour note is "Don't Tread on Me," which seems 
    unequivocally jingoistic.  After the impassioned protest against 
    war and social injustice on ...*And Justice for All*, "Tread" 
    comes as a shock.  Message to the members of Metallica:  Check out 
    the lavishly funded Hill and Knowlton public-relations campaign 
    that sold the gulf war to America's couch potatoes.  Do a little 
    research on the game of musical chairs that finds Republican 
    bigwigs shuffling back and forth between top-level cabinet posts 
    and key boardroom positions with certain oil-rich multinationals.  
    Go fight in a war yourselves.  *Then* wave the flag and jump on 
    the yellow-ribbon bandwagon, if you still want to.  "Don't Tread 
    on Me" rings hollow in its music as well as its lyrics, the only 
    outright bummer on an otherwise exemplary album of mature but 
    still kickass rock & roll.

Yesterday I was gone to buy Crimson Glory's last but finally I bought 
"Metallica". A fine album. It's not fast but it has good songs with catchy
riffs. I like it much more than AJFA and I think it's a good move for Metallica.
There is some seventies influence (Black Sabbath, wah-wah guitar solos etc) and
they do it well.

    I listened again over the weekend "Metallica" and I definetly consider
    it close to MoP in musical quality (although very different). RtL is
    still my favourite but MoP and M are not far away. I think AJFA
    represented the transition from MoP to M and while slowing down it was
    hesitating in building new kind of melodies needed by the slower stuff.
    M does it very well and I think it will be a great success for
    Metallica. The 2 (power) ballads are very strong numbers (vocals
    included). I'm happy Metallica isn't afraid to progress.

    	I'm still not sure what your point is.  I admitted that I like
    	to watch the video.  I also said that I didn't like to listen
    	to the song unless it was accompanied by the video.  Ergo, I
    	don't like the song.
    
    	I would not buy the single, I would not buy the album.  I just
    	like to look at the backing vocalist.

    Sandman video once and that was IT!

    	I happened to see "Enter Sandman" on the HBB last week, I think.
    	The funny thing is, I only saw about 15 minutes of the HBB and
    	caught it anyways.

    I was watching MTV the other day (ok it was yesterday) and there was an
    interview with Lars (I'm still waiting for them to be on ROCKLINE) and
    he said that in the past METALLICA had made a mistake in not doing
    videos, because now they realize it's OK as long as YOU control the
    video, and don't let it get out of hand. On another note, they will be
    performing ENTER SANDMAN tonight.... I was hoping for something like
    Holier than thou, or Through the never. oh well. I also heard through

    ballad category, and whoever thinks FADE TO BLACK s*cks then they

    struggle within" as an excellant song.......not single material but

    it said that a new METALLICA home video will be out around the 25th of
    December. For all you people who are out of it today, that's christmas,
    and if your still out of it, it's the day a big fat guy with a white

    Jason is no way better than Cliff.Cliff was totally excellant bass 
    player.The bass solo on Kill 'em all is totally awesome while Jasons

                FWIW-I saw Cliff when Metallica opened for OZZY.
     He had *NO* stage presence.....and those bellbottoms didn't do
    much in the way of appearance either....8')!

    He was an individual with an individual style,just  'cause some people
    wear spandex doesn't mean everyone should.He was also very talented
    bass player and as for his stage presence,he has a sack load more than

No chance.  Sorry, I've seen Cliff 'Em All, and I think Scary is a
better bassist than Cliff...

Jason is better, IMHO.

Of course Geddy Lee and Billy Sheehan rip 'em both apart.  :)

    
    Yeah, I think Cliff was the best in the Business, right after Steve
    Harris, but the emphasis is on WAS. If he had lived I'm sure he would
    have gotten much better (though it would take him years to be like
    HArris). But the same can be said for Newsted. When AJFA came out I
    hated J. But on this album I have to say, He has shown a MAJOR
    improvement. And as for his stage presence, I think has quite a bit of
    stage presence, Did anyone catch them on MTV last night????
    
    For now Jasopn Newkid, gets my vote, He's contributed a lot to this
    band, so just get off his back...

    I personally think that Jason is a more skillful player then Cliff was,
    but that Cliff played more creative parts.  Jasons bass parts are
    pretty primative IMHO.
    
    I like the tone that Jason uses better then Cliff's old tone, though. 
    Cliff seemed like a creative guy who could play fine, but didn't know
    much about his equipmnet or something.  
    
    Jason seems to have a wicked attitude problem.  I've read a couple of
    interviews with him and IMHO his attitude sucked.  Cliff seemed to have
    a good attitude.
    
    
    HOWEVER, I hate that bass solo Cliff did...
