1581.0. "New lift for Wildcat" by SOLVIT::SOARNG::TIMMONS () Thu Apr 17 1997 13:35

Just read in the newspaper the other day. New for the '97/98 season at
Wildcat (New Hampshire) will be the longest-fastest lift in New
Hampshire/Maine. They are installing a detachable quad parallel to the
decreped Gondola. It will be 6700' long and will take 6 1/2 minutes,
bottom to top. The old (I do mean O-L-D!!) gondola takes 13 min.
I assume the old lift will be dismantled (sure looks like it should
be). I just hope they put the bottom terminus a little ways down the
hill below the gondola terminal to eliminate that first hike in the
morning and the one after lunch for these tired old legs! (Second
thought, maybe was good exercise before skiing.....Naw!)

Don't knock it at least three generations have used those
"little clousterphobia intensification units". My parents
were amoung some of the early investors in Wildcat. This
year my children probably rode the same unit my parents
	- then myself rode in, WOW......Scary. I think it would
be kind of neat to have one of those hanging in the back
	yard..

By the winter of 1957, 3 trails and 2 lifts were
developed, including America's first detachable Gondola.
Recreational skiing in New England would now have a new
standard by which to be judged.
