641.11need best route driving directionsAPLVEW::DEBRIAElanguage by declarationMon Feb 24 1997 18:0714

    What is the best route to take from Harvard/Lowell (MA) to Lake Placid?

    The shortest distance looks to be going to Burlington, VT but then Lake
    Champlain doesn't seem to have any bridges at that point. Are there
    winter ferries at Burlington? Or am I forced to go the long way to
    Albany (Rt2?) and then take i-87 up to Lake Placid? Any idea on the
    driving time to expect?

    Also, there used to be a free route planning service offered on the
    www, but I can't seem to find it. Any address pointers?

    -Erik

641.12Rt 2 is pretty but slowCPEEDY::BAZTom BazarnickMon Feb 24 1997 22:067
    Rt 2 is quite slow from the Connecticut River area all the way to
    the Adirondak Northway (I-87). From the Lowell area it's much faster
    to take 495 to the Mass Pike to the New York State Thruway to the
    Northway, about 2:45 hrs total. Then it's about 2:30 more to Lake
    Placid. I don't speed, so you could probably do a little better.

641.13lake placid directions from bostonAPLVEW::DEBRIAElanguage by declarationTue Feb 25 1997 14:0819

    Thanks for the tip. I would have thought taking I495 thirty minutes
    south to the Pike which also continues southerly would not have been
    the best choice (looking at the map), but if Rt2 is a pain to drive,
    it sounds worth the diversion for unbroken easy highway driving...

    I also found a Lake Placid website that offered directions from Boston
    in case it helps anyone else:

    From Boston, Springfield, Hartford Take Massachusetts Turnpike
    (I-90) to
    Albany. Pick up I-787 north to Cohoes. Connect with Route 7 west
    to I-87
    north. Follow I-87 (Northway) to Exit 30, Pick up Rt. 9 north and
    follow it
    for two miles to Rt. 73. Continue on 73 for 28 miles to Lake
    Placid area.
    From NYC: 5 hrs, Albany: 2 1/2 hrs. Drive time from Boston: 5 hours.
