1269.0. "whither libos.so?" by WRKSYS::CHALTAS (Fetchez la vache!) Fri Mar 28 1997 11:28

    I had Open3D V4.1 installed on a UNIX workstation with a ZLXp-E2
    card. I deleted it, then installed Open3D V4.3. Now the
    X server won't start, because it can't find libos.so.

    Sure enough, O3DDWSBASE410 includes /usr/shlib/X11/libos.so, and
    Open3D V4.3 does not. It looks as though DIGITAL UNIX had a version
    of libos.so at one time as well in OSVX11405

    (I've been looking through .inv files).

    I'm guessing that Open3D V4.1 shipped a replacement version,
    and then erroneously deleted it when I removed Open3D V4.1 --
    so where should I get a working version of libos.so?

The one shipped on the Open3D kit is the same (just recompiled) of the one
shipped in Digital UNIX V4.0A. You can get a kit from either place.

If you have access to another system on the net, just copy the file over.
If you don't have access, let me know and I'll see what I can do to help.

BTW, there is a new patch kit coming out for libos.so which fixes a power
management bug.

    Thanks -- I'll just crib one from another system.

1269.3Where to get libos.soWRKSYS::COULTERIf this typewriter can't do it, ...Fri Mar 28 1997 13:2115
    Well, the BEST place is the brand-new libos.so that
    the UNIX folks have put together for us all. Fixes
    three bugs, including the famous "49.7-day" hang.

    You can get their patch kit from:

    	gqa22:/usr/users/open3d_kits/coulter

    as
    		libos.tar.Z

    Contains two (2) complete updates, one for UNIX 4.0a
    and one for UNIX 4.0b; and readme files, too. Nice
    job of packaging.

    what's the famous "49.7-day hang"? I've never heard of it.
    Maybe it's not so famous! :-)
    Also, what are the other two bugs it fixes?

One bug it fixes is a bug in Power Management code. This bug caused the screen
to "flicker" (fast on and off) in certain situations when the system went
into time management mode.

The 49.7 day problem was a problem that was causing Cateyes system to crash
every 49.7 days.
