1257.0. "DGL support in Xwindows?" by SWAM1::POIANI_MI () Thu Mar 06 1997 22:13

I have a customer with SGI boxes that wants to display the SGI screens
    on an AlphaNT box.

They installed Exceed from Hummingbird Communications, and they are
claiming to need support for DGL in their X windows display. They claim
that Exceed only supports, XGL which means OpenGL on X to me. Is this
DGL some proprietary 3d Language for X from SGI? Do we support it in
our UNIX? How about Xcursion or anyother Xpackages?

    All help greatly appreciated.

If I recall correctly, DGL is what SGI implemented for remote display
of IRIS GL programs. IRIS GL is now obsolete and has been superceded by OpenGL.
I doubt if any X11 server supports DGL except SGI and even they support it
reluctantly.

Remote display of OpenGL programs in the X11 environment uses "GLX". I don't
know if Exceed supports GLX.

I'd suggest asking the customer if they are using IRIS GL, and if so, would
they consider migrating their applications to OpenGL.

    Exceed does support GLX/open3d.

1257.3You might want to put a note in NOTED::EXCURSION (hit KP7)BGSDEV::CROCKERBen Crocker, GKS proj. leader, 381-1909Fri Mar 07 1997 15:4713
You might want to put a note in the eXcursion conference (add it to
your notebook by hitting KP7).

There have been a few notes and replies in that conference regarding
OpenGL support. One thread is 2662.*, from October 1995. At that time,
the eXcursion group was "investigating adding OpenGL support." Another
thread is 3073.* - base note July 1996, reply February 1997 asking for
further information, no reply from the eXcursion developers/product manager.

As OpenGL developers, *we* would love to see eXcursion support GLX,
but customer demand will be the determining factor.

eXceed from Hummingbird does support GLX, but only in it's most recent
    release (5.1.3?).

Don't count on it working perfectly from the SGI, as it's likely that
the combination hasn't been extensively tested, and there is plenty of
history to suggest that there will be problems.
