1227.0. "DECW$PVRM_0 pages like crazy; poor ZLXp-L2 performance" by LNZALI::BACHNER (Mouse not found. Click OK to continue) Mon Jan 27 1997 09:30

This problem was originally posted in the DECWINDOWS notesfile, where someone
suggested that it might be an Open3D problem.

A customer is observing poor performance and even DECW$SERVER_0 crashes on an
AlphaStation 600 5-266 with an ZLXp-L2 graphics card.

His Basestar application opens 6 or 7 windows using the DisplayPostScript server
extension. While the windows are created, the DECW$PVRM_0 process starts to page
like crazy, eating up the whole pagefile quota which it shares with its parent
DECW$SERVER_0, eventually crashing the server.

Even before the critical number of windows is reached, display performance
(building up the PostScript image) is very poor.

Open3D has been at V3.3, upgrading to V3.5 did not help. Motif is V1.2-4

The customer did/does not see the problem when

- using Motif 1.2-3 or

- replacing the L2 graphics card with an E1

In both cases, there is no excessive paging and performance is ok.

Any idea what they can do to get it working ?

Thanks for all and any hints,
Hans.

Open3d v3.5 was only qualed with Motif 1.2-3 (as it says
in the release notes, I believe). Why can't the customer
    use the earlier version?

1227.2the installation guide says "1.2-3 or higher"LNZALI::BACHNERMouse not found. Click OK to continueTue Jan 28 1997 08:5013
Hmmm... the release notes, the SPD and the cover letter say that Motif 1.2-3 is
required. However, the installation guide says

" o DECwindows[TM] Motif[R] Version 1.2-3 or higher for
             OpenVMS Alpha" ^^^^^^^^^

I'll ask whether they have a special requirement for 1.2-4 (maybe the CDE
desktop ? or all the bug fixes...)

Do you plan to issue an ECO for Open3d V3.5 to support Motif 1.2-4 ?

Thanks for your help,
Hans.

The SPD is the goerning document; Release Notes will
tell you if something is broken. Installation Guide
    is generally correct, but ...

No, there are no plans to do 1.2-4 for Open3D v3.5.

Yes, we would be interested in why they need 1.2-4.

1227.4when will 1.2-4 be supported ?LNZALI::BACHNERMouse not found. Click OK to continueTue Feb 04 1997 06:4026
This is an installation consisting of a bunch of workstations, most of them used
for Unigraphics - therefore the ZLXp-L cards. Only a few workstations are used
for the application mentioned in .1. (BTW, the Unigraphics workstations suffer
from occasional hangs - could this also be a result of the unsupported
configuration ?)

Apparently, the users are already used to the CDE environment and they don't
want to

- switch back to 1.2-3 for all users
- nor have two different software configurations for the two applications.

So one important question for them is: when can they get a version of Open3D
which supports Motif 1.2-4 ? Are there already plans in place or at least any
guestimates I can give the customer ?

Needless to say, they are less than satisfied with incorrect software
requirements listed in the installation guide...

To make things more complicated, this particular installation is not the
customers own installation, but he has delivered it to one of his customers.

Please help me to help them.

Thanks in advance,
Hans.

Let's back up a short step and see what else is going on.

Because you mention Open3D v3.5, I have assumed that this
is an OpenVMS system; is that correct? You're using CDE
and Motif 1.2-4 on some version of VMS: what version?

Do you get the same paging behavior on -L1 and -L2 cards?

The next supported version of Open3D for VMS is Open3D v4.1,
for OpenVMS Alpha v7.1. Is there some way you can try that
    combination and see what happens?

Does this happen *without* the heavy use of Display PostScript?

When there is a crash, what does the error log say? Even when
there isn't, what does it say?

How much main memory is on these systems? Swap? What at the
    system tuning parameters?

Unigraphics runs a lot better with overlays supported (as they
are in UNIX). Have you tried the same environment on a UNIX
system, or is that not possible? Turned off backingstore and
saveunders on the VMS system? What version of Unigraphics is
being used? What are the users doing when the hangs are
    reported?

What happens when you try the Motif window manager, instead of
CDE? That's the same version of Motif, just without the Common
Desktop Enviro front-end. Is it CDE that they like, and that
just happens to require Motif 1.2-4?

Maybe there is something else going on that one of the answers
    will make more obvious.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll pass them on to the customer and ask him for
the requested details if the problem persists.

Btw,

> Turned off backingstore and saveunders on the VMS system?

I know about the DECW$SERVER_DISABLE_BACKING_STORE logical - will this also
disable saveunders ?

Thanks,
Hans.
