3251.0. "Ed Gerhard" by ASABET::bflat4.ogo.dec.com::pelkey () Thu Jan 30 1997 10:47

Has anyone heard Ed Gerhard ?

I picked up a few Guitar Samplers from Windham Hill a few months back,
and Ed Gerhard was one of the artists featured on one of these
samplers. The tune is named 'The Handing Down' and it uses non
stanard tuning.

		E- A - D - E - A - E

Really a gorgeous tune, one of the better ones on that CD,,

Not sure what this tunning is called, (I've used open D before,
heard alot about DADGAD, and some other popluar tunings, but
this one I've never used before)

Anyway, I picked up the tab to the tune, and along with the
CD have been inching my way, measure by meausre through it.

The most notable thing about it is the way Ed throws
harmonics in various places. He's got a few CDs released,
and I found his web site yesterday, and emailed him. Have
yet to hear back, but I poked through the conf. didn't find
a note on him thought I'd start one.

Ed Gerhard's becoming one of my favorites. He pops up pretty regularly
in both Acoustic Guitar (AG) and Fingerstyle Guitar (FG).

"The Handing Down" was featured in recent issue of FG. The recording
on the FG CD (each FG issue includes a companion CD) is the version off
of Ed's Luna CD (his latest), and is slower than the Windham Hill
    sampler version.

As far as the tuning, Mr. Gerhard uses alot of different tunings.
In the article in FG, he says he developed this particular tuning
specifically for the song, in order to facilitate the use of harmonics.

Actually, Ed Gerhard's use of non-standard tunings is the one thing I
*don't* like about him-- but just because it limits the number of his
arrangements that I'll try to tackle. I'm not an alternate tuning guy,
and seldom (if ever) venture beyond dropped-D.

He has a CD/book combination (notation and tab) available and 3 or 4
CDs. Breedlove sponsors a Web page for him. You can get ordering
info there (http://www=teleport.com/~richm/egint.htm), as well as
tour info, tunings for all of his recordings, etc.

His two main guitars are a Somogyi dreadnaught and a Breadlove C2.
I think he could probably coax great tone out of about anything,
    though.

A few months ago AG printed his arrangement of "The Water is Wide"--
    very nice (and relatively easy).

Been to the web site, and all,, and I've actually gotten
about 3/4's of the way through 'The Handing Down' using
the CD and the Tab to find my way, and I happen to sort
of like the alternate tuning stuff, it's one of the reasons
I've started working on this song.

{I can see the need for another good dreadnaught coming!
 One to keep standard, one to use for alternate tunings .}

I'm gonna look up his latest release and pick it up,
also would like to hear the version on Luna, see if
it's any different than the W.H. one.

Anyhow, I sent him some Email, and I'm curious if
he'll respond...
