Really depends on WHAT you're trying to do: record your band, write and
record tunes on your own, create high quality audio for release versus
just demos, etc. Also depends on the kind of music and
    instrumentation.

    But...

Multi-track recorder - Essential because you can't play everything
    	at once

Drum machine - Essential if you don't have a drummer

Keyboard - essential if you want to put down any instruments you
    	can't play

MIDI sequencer - if you don't play keys, is a good way to help you
create keyboard parts. If you do play keys, is a great way
to do the entire production yourself. If you also buy a
synchronizer (allows sequencer to sync to tape) you can also
save tape tracks by avoiding having to put the keyboards down
    	on tape.

Just a plain old tape recorder works real nice for me.
