3142.0. "question - Guild D4-12 dreadnaught.." by USCTR1::donip10.ogo.dec.com::pelkey (life aint for the squeamish) Sun Dec 03 1995 10:25

I've been in the process of searching out a 12 string
Acoustic,,

right now, I think I've got it close to a choice..

I'm probably going with Guild (Dreadnaught) although
I'm also looking at others

I know about the D25-12,. but I found a D4-12 by Guild too.
Is this new ? A replacement maybe for the d25-12 ???
Anyone know the scoop on the D4-12 ?

As far as electronics, what can I expect as standard ??
(None ???) I thought the D25s come with a Fishman..
that'd be cool, that's what's in my Yari dreadnaught..

All I know right now is the basic cost,,, (list 1015, retail
about $700.) it's about the same as the D25...

That's about all I know.. I've played several D25-12's and we
all know that they're excellent... But I'm curious about the
D4-12....

anyone have a suggestion for any good stores..
I live in Leominster Ma. Wouldn't mind a drive
to go someplace good...

I'm considering the Guitar Center... (Boston.)

The D4-12 is from their "Satin Series". All the instruments in this
series have satin finishes (yecccccchhhh!). I'm not sure about
the Fishman pickup. I think the D4 series may have them. D25-12's
do not come with pickups, but they are easy enough to add.

I own a D25-12. Mine has a natural finish. These are also available
with a sunburst finish as well. They are great instruments, if you
don't mind BIG necks. I bought mine through the Want-ads in *MINT*
condition for $375. This is probably better than average for a used
D25-12. Nonetheless, I would look for a used one. You should be able
to find a clean one in the $500 range.

Ahh! I see,,, I don't like the Satin Finish either,,

must be a puritan thing...

And yea, I'll start checking the Want Adds,, I should
be able to find something interesting..

I'll probably stay with the d25-12 if I stay with
Guild.....

thanks...

hey, I was lookin at a Victor Litz the D4-12 description read
Solid Spruce top, and High Gloss finish....

629 with case!!

Sounds like i'm back on the Guild path,,

I'm just wondering how the neck is.. if the neck is
too big I'll have to look for another one...

I just saw a D4-12NT at lunchtime. It had the satin finish.
It's possible that Guild may have done away with the satin
finish and are now making the D4-series instruments with
high-gloss finishes?!?!

Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmm!

I believe (other than the models designed as strictly
acoustic/electric), all acoustic Guilds with a pickup have a model
number ending in "E." For example a D25E would have a pickup--
    a D25 would not. Likewise, a cutaway is signified with a "C."
    So I would expect neither a D25 nor a D4 to have a pickup.

I believe the "E" models include a Fishman transducer and pre-amp.

I'm far from an expert on Guild, though.

If I were going for a Guild 12, I'd want the jumbo maple one
    (J40-12?).

3142.7shot the wad on a legend..USCTR1::pelkey.ogo.dec.com::pelkeyprofessional hombreThu Dec 14 1995 13:1217
Well, I wound up ordering an ovation legend 12 string from
a music store in town, (Luckily i knew the guy managing the
store, got it new 40% off..

It showed up on Monday,,

it was a little more money than i planned on spending, but it's
wonderful... the neck is perfect,, and it sounds
great both as an acoustic, and defintely when you plug it in...
luv it...

(PS: I checked out the Guild D4s and I didn't like em... Satin
finish/Tone.... made em look real low end.. The guitars played o.k.
but I was also a little disappointed in the tone too...)
