3139.0. "GP Readers Poll Results" by GANTRY::ALLBERY (Jim) Mon Nov 27 1995 11:49

Well, I received the January issue of Guitar Player in the mail the
other day. Once again, the readers of GP have astounded me with
thoughtful, well-researched selections ;^). Some of the *highlights*:

o Eric Clapton taking both the best blues and best overall
titles (I actually like EC, but would never have considered
him for either). EC even took 3rd in the best acoustic
    	  fingerstyle (!) category.

o Jimmy Page as best rock guitarist (what did Jimmy Page do
in the last year? Wasn't the "Unleaded" thing more than
    	  a year ago?).

o Tony Rice for best acoustic pick style was an excellent choice:
too bad he shared the title with Neil Young (nothing against
Neil, but the two aren't exactly in the same league).

o No winner in Flamenco, since none of the primary vote recipients
actually *play* Flamenco. (But I'm glad they didn't give it to
    	  Charo this time.)

At least Liona Boyd didn't take best classical this year: last
year's win put her in the hall of fame and rendered her ineligible
for future wins. The title went to Eliot Fisk (not my pick, but
    an OK choice).

Of course the readers poll is nothing but a popularity contest (as
    GP freely admits).

I found the return to blues/rock theme interesting, if nothing else.

I find it interesting that the readers of Bass Player always seem to
    pick based on technical considerations:

    1991 - Geddy Lee
    1992 - Les Claypool
    1993 - Vic Wooton
    1994 - Michael Manring

.. whereas, GP readers view it as a popularity contest. Didn't Willie
Nelson get picked for best something one year? I love Willie ... been
a fan since my Texas days ... but I'd never pick him as the best
guitar player in any catagory (except maybe "rattiest guitar on
    stage").

Interesting story re the first BP readers poll. They only got about
100 or so votes, no clear winner, so basically everyone who got a vote
was declared a winner (all names were printed). Brian Rost and I had
joked at the time about sending in a vote for each other; if we had,
    we would've "won"!

And so many people had a beef with the Guitar Handbook's list of innovators.

The fact that Tony Rice is known to the voters, I'd imagine, would eliminate
Eric Clapton for anything he's done on accoustic. That he shared the title
for best accoustic style with Neil Young indicates that the whole poll is
really just for grins.
