3091.0. "Strat 62 and 66 Pickups...How can you tell?" by PCBUOA::ANDERSON_R () Fri Jun 02 1995 12:08

I have a chance to buy two complete set's of strat pickups from the
"60's". How can you date them? I want to be sure what I'm buying is the
genuine article. Also, are reverse wound middle pickups intuitively
obvious from the neck and bridge pickups? The sets are from 1962 and
    1966.

    Thank you,
    Rich

'62s should have black bobbins, polepieces staggered in height and
with a slight bevel around the top edge, no other obvious markings,
dates, etc. And of course, they should look 'old' :-) Actually,
although there are ways to false-age things like pickups, once you've
seen a few old ones you really can usually tell what's legit and what
isn't just by how old they look.

'66s should have grey bobbins, and very possibly a date penciled on
the bottom (not sure how consistent they were about this). Both sets
of pickups should have one creme and one black colored lead wire,
covered in a waxy cloth insulation.

That said, with so many commercial and custom winders around for so
long now, there are no guarantees and you still may get fooled. If it
were me, two of the most important things I would be looking at are
the price and the trustworthiness of the source. A set of Fralins
or the better Duncans will cost you up to $180 or so; if you're under
this, there's little risk. If we're talking serious money, then the
deciding factor would be how much I trust the person selling them.

Thanks for the information Ric. I'll find out this coming Sunday what
they look like. Asking price is $25 per pickup. Sounds a bit funny,
but you never know. Armed with the information you've given me it'll be
    very interesting.
