3082.0. "Cooder & Lindley tour" by ESBS01::HARVEY () Wed May 17 1995 08:11

I hear that Ry Cooder and David Lindley the two finest slide guitar players on
the planet are about to embark on a tour of Europe.

  Does anyone have dates????
Has anyone in the US seen the show?????

Also I learn on the net that Cooder has a CD out on David Byrnes label where he
plays with some guy from Okinawa. I would appreciate reference number and the
name of the label.

That's funny, I thought I read that the greatest slide guitar player
on the planet was touring, but I didn't see Sonny Landreth's name
    mentioned ;_)

BTW, I've seen the disk you are referring to, but I haven't bought
it yet. Next time I'm in the records stores, I'll note the name
and post it. It may be a while. I've been trying to stay away from
    these places lately. Too tempting!

3082.3Kings of Slide and some ramblings (i'm waiting for the mail man )ESBS01::HARVEYFri May 19 1995 06:3119
While Sonny is certainly up there, I did once witness the sad spectacle of him
ripping off Cooder's solo on John Hiatt's Lipstick Sunset from the Bring the
Family LP. He didn't quite make it!!! I'd have more respect if he'd played his
own thing. Speaking of which that very same solo, which truly is sublime,
consists of the tune to "Danny Boy", beloved croon of drunken, aged Irishmen.

Anyway I now know the name of David Byrnes record label and the okinawan
guitarist so i should be able to track down this interesting sounding CD.
( LUAKA BOP & Shoukichi Kina ).

Interestingly, David Lindley has a theory that cultures whose main staple food
is rice and fish produce similar music. Apparently the rythmns of Okinawa and
Jamaica are not entirely dissimilar, good-time laid-back groove.

Also while I'm on the subject check out the demon guitarist from hell,
a guy from Madagascar called D'Gary, CD available on the Shanachie label.
Recorded by David Lindley and Henry Kaiser, this guy didn't even own his own
guitar till they gave him one. He uses the weirdest open tunings and must have
at least four hands. Brilliant.

    Re. European dates

RC and DL are playing in the Netherlands on June 19 and 20.
I don't know of any other dates.
I have seen them a few years ago in Amsterdam and it was one of
    the best concerts I've attended.
Unfortunately (;-)) I'm on holiday in Great Britain in June.
Maybe I someone knows about dates in that country?
