2993.0. "Scale software" by MPGS::MARKEY (One Shot Stopping with .45 ACP) Tue Oct 25 1994 15:41

Mods: if this is redundant, please feel free to combine with an
appropriate topic... I couldn't find any.

Since purchasing a six string bass, I've been doing a lot of scale
exercises getting used to playing 2 octaves for all modes, without
going up the neck... plus, I may start playing with some alternative
tunings... which of course change the scale fingerings. And... I
play stick as well, and would like to be able to experiment more
with scales on that instrument, which has 10 strings and is tuned
    rather strangely...

So, being a propeller-head by day, of course the first solution
that springs to mind is SOFTWARE!!!

I'm thinking of writing a program that you can handle up to 12
strings... where you provide the octave and note value of the
open string. The program then prints a fingering chart for all
of the modes... it automatically figures out the best fingering
given the tuning in use. The modes could, of course, be translated
    to any key...

I thought this would be a cool piece of software... but I'm
not inclined to reinvent the wheel... so if such a piece of
software exists, please point me at it. Otherwise, I'm ready
    to HACK !!!

(P.S. I'd probably do a Windows version first, since that is
    my primary development platform.)

The only things I've seen are terminal-based and they usually only show
the full run of the scale up the neck.

    BTW... this is the output of a program that I wrote last night;
this program will be the starting point for the software I
    described in .0.

Roman numerals correspond to mode based on a D Major scale.
Stars (asteric) indicate notes that are in the scale. Numbers
indicate finger, with 1 == index finger and 4 == pinky.
Tuning is BEADGC (standard six string bass tuning). Finally,
the number below the dashed line (----) indicates the fret
    number; 0 == open string.

Addendum to what Mikey said, the ones I've seen in here also didn't
    appear to support alternate tunings.

I'll worry about those when I get standard tuning down.

One thing about the output from my program that I posted earlier...

the lowest string (pitch) is at the bottom, the highest string
at the top... so, in the output I posted, the B string is on
the bottom (near the dashed line), and the C string is on the
    top.

In case this was not obvious...

hey man, when I wrote software to do this, nobody used any
of these namby-pamby alternate tunings except acoustic geeks :-)

I just pulled a demo version of a guitar scale program (Guitar Magic) down from
America On-Line a couple of days ago. The demo version only has the
Major and Lydian scales for just two keys, but it does show you both
standard notation and a neck diagram for the scales (and maybe
different chord voicings too?). I lets you set a beginning and end
point on the neck diagram and then shows you all of the scale notes
    between those points.

The file to look for is GUITAR.ZIP - registration for the full version
    is only $15...

Seems to me like I wrote something like this years and years ago, but I
have no idea what happened to it. I'm sure it was pretty primative...
