2986.0. "how'd day do dat?" by STRATA::AUSTIN () Mon Oct 03 1994 10:28

    I can't find an appropriate topic to put this in so...

    I'm curious to know what kind of guitar/amp/setup is used for these two
    songs which I've been really getting into lately;

    The lead guitar(Toy Caldwell?) on "Can't You See" by Marshall Tucker.
    Sounds like a Tele/Twin maybe? I've heard this song hundreds of times
    but never really 'listened' to the lead until recently; I think it's
    incredible.

    Also, the incredible tone on the intro to "Interstate Love Song" by
    Stone Temple Pilots.

    Thanks,
    Alan

    Toy Caldwell played an ES335 variant almost exclusively.
    When I saw him play last he had a Boogie amp (combo).
    He's got a smokin' sound! Also, fwiw - he doesn't use a pick.

Caldwell, tele/twin...

Hmmm,,, every time I've seen him, it's been with a Les Paul....

And if ya ask me, the sound, as I recall, is very Paul sounding,
not much tele-bite there at all.... plus, he doesn't use a pick,
it's all done with his thumb.. even cooler huh ???

stp....  couldn't tell ya...

    I never realized he used his thumb, but it makes sense now;
    no doubt it helps him get that "velvet hammer" tone!

    I like the way his amp sounds in the recording, like they musta miked
    it with him in small room? Nice ambience.

    I've see tucker several times and Caldwell "always" played
    a less-paul...

    Another old-time Tucker fan checking in here. Last I saw them (which
    was at least 10 years ago!) he was using a paul and a boogie.

    Ok - How does Pat Metheny get his sound (I've heard lexicon PCM-60)
    any specifics? Also, does anyone have any samples of the "synth horn"
    sound he uses? (I know it's a synclavier --- has anyone sampled it
    to a different format?)

    PCM-60 ... doubt it. If my memory is serving me, the PCM-60 is
    a cheesy "preset" type reverb unit. Not many fx to be had out
    of that puppy.

    Yeah, it's a preset only dedicated reverb unit, but I wouldn't call it
    cheezy. I have one and it consistantly sounds great!

    If you mean a programmable multieffects unit, the Lex PCM-70 might fit
    the bill, but I can't imagine anyone using one live, that's a studio
    beastie. Maybe a Lex Prime Time...
