2974.0. "Billy Gibbons / ZZTOP" by ARDEV::GOODWIN () Thu Sep 08 1994 14:08

Another player who has stood the test of time and merits his
	own topic.

ZZTOP's sound is a tad over processed for my ear, though there
is no denying that they are a talented group of musicians.

Gibbon's guitar style is forceful and creative. Some of his
licks vaguely remind me of Beck... common influence obviously
being a love of big block hot rods.

There's a book out about ZZ Top. Dunno if it's new. Has lots of pictures
of early Gibbons. It's funny to see him so dorky looking.

I agree, though. Tracks like their cover of "I Thank You" and "Drivin'
While Blind" and "I'm nation wide" (whatever it's called) are classics.

    Not to mention T-O-N-E.

There can only be one true god of tone and it is Billy.

Of course, I've read thru some of the incredible lengths he goes to
    get it in the studio.

I have too, Like those pyramid stacks of Super Reverbs, tweeds,
Marshalls, etc. all blasting away at some mics in the middle.
And running through Rockmans into the board.

But on Antenna he just used a Custom Shop Tele through a Custom Shop
Dual Professional. And I think it's his best sound since the early days.
I saw them on Letterman and he was using the Tele through a Vibra King
(or Tone Master, I forget which) and the tone was all there.

So I think he's come full circle. Less is more.

Yeah, and still manages to make everything he plays through sound like
a Rockman. Blek. He had a much more interesting tone on the old ZZ
albums IMHO. The Eliminator/whatever sound is 100% generic in my book.

I love ZZTOP but prefer their older material. The hi-tech studio
production kinda leaves me cold.If it came to a toss up between "Tush"
and "Pincushion" I know what I'd pick!

Give me older 'top any time. "Whisky Mama," "Cheap Sun Glasses" great
stuff. Hide the Rockman and let the tone out!

Anyone have a clue what BG uses for a rig on "I'm bad, I'm Nationwide"?
I was driving home last nite and heard it on the radio. I've been an
*old* ZZ fan since I can remember but never really tried to analize his
    tone. What do you think?
