2940.0. "Help with configuration (JMP1 and GP8) ..." by INMCC::MUELLER () Thu Jun 09 1994 11:49

Hi all,

I'm proud owner of a Marshall JMP-1, an Alesis Quadraverb GT and a Roland GP-8.
This configuration sounds good, but since I'm not used to configure effects I
have some problems getting something usefull out of it.

I know, that the GP-8 has some undocumented ways to be connected to the Marshall
but I really don't know how to do it. I want to get the most out of it and would
like to ask you for your experiences and configurations if you have something
similar (I have seen the GP/JMP1 Combination with many bands so I think it is
not that excotic).

Main Problems:

	- The Filter of the GP-8. Is it a usefull feature and how can it be
	  of use ?
	- Your experiences of combining the OD1/OD2 of the JMP1 with the
	  OD/Distortion/Compressor of the GP ?
	- General Setup of the configuration (JMP1 as Effect of the GP8 ?
	  GP8 as Effect of the JMP1 ? Other possibilities (the undocumented)?).

Marshall Documentation is very poor, GP8 Documentation is (since it is used)
not complete. Please help me in getting a feeling for my stuff.

Thanks

ChriS

    Chris, given that all the outputs and inputs on the GP-8 are
    documented, it's hard to imagine anyway to connect it that I could
    be reasonably described as "undocumented" unless you are talking about
    modifications.

    About the only thing I can think of is that you might want to connect
    one thru the effects loop of the other. That changes where the gain
    stages occur and can have pretty significant differences in the sound.

2940.2Post it tomorrow ...INMCC::MUELLERThu Jun 09 1994 13:379
I'll post the plan tomorrow. I've got it from a friend of mine who has it
from a friend's friend and so on. The setting doesn't make any reason to me,
but it works (with a REUSSENZEHN Pre-Amp - REUSSENZEHN is a local dealer, primary
a Marshall-Tuner). With the JMP1 I have more possibilities and another sound
behaviour than with the REUSSENZEHN. To setup a proper configuration I need to
know what is going on there.

Here's the plan of the Configuration. Initially it was covered from the GP8 -
REUSSENZEHN Configuration but works with the GP8 - JMP1 configuration too. To use
this configuration I need to know what's going on there to adjust the settings
of the GP8 Parameters in the right way.

QV = QuadraVerb GT

Guitar --> GP8 Input
GP8 Right Output --> JMP1 Effect Return Right
GP8 Left Output --> JMP1 Effect Return Left
GP8 Effect Send --> JMP1 Input
GP8 Effect Return --> QV Output (Mono)
JMP1 Effect Send --> QV Input (Mono)
JMP1 Master Output --> Amp

Does this make any sense for you ???

    I drew a little graph of that.

    Here's the linear signal path:

    	Guitar
    	GP-8 pre-efx-send
    	JMP-1 pre-efx preamp
    	QV
    	GP-8 post-efx send
    	JMP-1 post-efx
    	Amp

    The idea behind it seems to be to be able to have the JMP's first
    pre-amp stages in the GP-8's effects loop without having subsequent
    stages there.

    It's a very odd way of doing things (more typical to put the GP-8
    and QV in the JMPs effects loop) but if you like it, more power to
    you.

2940.5But how will the signal be changed ???INMCC::MUELLERFri Jun 10 1994 12:2415
I'm not sure if I understand this path. Is there any way to find out how the
original guitar signal will be modified with this configuration? I don't know
how to setup and combine GP8/JMP1 settings (like Overdrive/compressor). It
sounds to me, that I have two signals merged together:

Guitar  --> GP8 -----> GP8 settings -------------
	     |                                  |
	     | (original Guitar-signal)         |
	     Y                                  |
	    JMP1 ----> JMP1 settings ---> QV --------> Amp

Am I right with that picture?

    Chris,

    I think you've mostly lost me.  I don't understand what you're asking
    nor do I understand the diagram.

    However, I get the impression that you think that you actually
    have signals running in parallel which are merged. That is not the case.

    The signal path is entirely in series exactly as I gave it. Perhaps it
    would help for you to think of each of your boxes as being TWO boxes,
    one being "what happens before the effects send" and one being "what
    happens after the effects send".

    Thus your signal path is:

    	Guitar
    	GP-8 "before"
    	JMP-1 "before"
    	QV "before"
    	QV "after"
    	GP-8 "after"
    	JMP-1 "after
    	Amp

    Don't know if this helps.

2940.7Think it's too much for meINMCC::MUELLERMon Jun 13 1994 08:3611
Hm, I sure don't wanna bore you, but I think there are problems with my english
and my general understanding. Since last year I played a Kitty Hawk and all I
needed to do was plugging my guitar into the baby. So I didn't care much about
effects.

Will the signal of the Guitar be modified by each step or are there any steps,
where the signal is just passed from one effect to the other? Are there any notes
entries that could help me understand what's going one there?

    Whether the guitar signal is modified depends on the patch settings
    of the units.
