2923.0. "Internet locations" by GIDDAY::KNIGHTP (There's room for you inside) Thu Apr 28 1994 03:40

I have just discovered the wonderfull world of internet, ftp'ing
    stuff. Boy is this great.

So how do I find out where all the good stuff is, is there a
common directory for public domain stuff somewhere on the internet.
How do you guys come up with your locations?

For guitar/music related stuff see ftp.nevada.edu. See also topic 2143
(esp. 2143.10) in this conference for some listings. There's also the
newsgroups themselves, which often list pointers to new ftp sites
   (alt.guitar, alt.guitar.bass, rec.music.*, etc).

I am very computer/network illiterate,so could someone perhaps
post a beginners guide to accessing and using internet?

I am leaving DEC at the end of next week, and would like to be able
to do this stuff before I move on.I`ve been told that I should be
able to do this when I move as they are on a vax network, which I do
know to be the case as vaxmail can be sent between sites.

Price Club has a book called something like "The Idiot's Guide to the
Internet" for $8.95, and there are zillions of other books out there,
too. Since you're just starting out, why not join Compuserve, America
On-Line, or one of the other commercial systems. They can all do
E-mail to/from the Internet, and some of them can do file transfers.

Before you go, collect the E-mail (VAXmail) addresses of the people
within DEC that you'll want to reach.

    Good luck, Tom!

See also the notes conference SOFBAS::INTERNET_TOOLS. A little digging
there will teach you about getting around on the Internet. It's a lot
easier if you've got an ULTRIX or OSF/1 node, but if not it can be done
from a VMS system (with UCX installed).

I will try and get hold of the book mentioned previously and check
out the Internet notes conference as well.

I`ve got one more working week to go,but I`ll keep up to date with
    Guitar notes until the end.
