2850.0. "Guitar Picker Alert--Junior Brown" by SAHQ::ROSENKRANZ (Go ask Alice....) Mon Nov 08 1993 14:03

I heard a pretty wild version of "Sugar foot rag" this weekend.
Generally this is pretty standard stuff for guitar pickers
(I think its a Hank Garland tune) and not much to get excited
about. But this version had some pretty wild pickin, and this
guy kept throwing in Hendrix licks here and there. It was
pretty impressive and fun to listen to.

It turns out it was done by Junior Brown. There was an article
about him in the latest GP. I'd never heard of him. He plays
a combined tele/lap steel guitar. This guy seems to have some
talent and certainly a sense of humor. Might be worth a listen.

Anyone else know anything about this guy???

You just missed him if you live near Boston, he played over at Johnny
    D's a few weekends ago.

He's from Texas (Austin?), plays mostly the old honky-tonk style (Hank
Williams, Ernie Tubb) but unlike most country front men he also is the
    lead instrumentalist.

He has two albums out now (I think on Elektra); there was a previous
cassette only release that may or may not be part of these two albums.

2850.2Guit With It!ELWOOD::VEDUCCIOTue Nov 09 1993 10:2927
He calls his custom doublenecked Tele/Steel guitar a "Guitsteel" and
the name of his latest record is called "Guit With It." I bought it a
while back on a hunch after I saw the picture of him playing that thing
on the front cover and was not disappointed. Along with "Sugarfoot Rag,"
other stand outs are "Highway Patrol", "Guitsteel Blues,"and "My Wife
Thinks You're Dead" which features Jimmy Vaughn on lead lead guitar. His
wife has a very good voice and sings duet or backup on a few songs to good
effect. It is released on the Curb record label and they have also reissued
his first record that Brian has mentioned in the previous note.

His sound is basically hard-core country but he has some elements of
rock and blues thrown in here and there for good measure. You definitely
wouldn't mistake him for one of the "new country" type acts (and I mean
  that as a compliment).
I caught the show at Johnny D's a few weeks back and couldn't believe
how good this guy is live. He was accompanied by his wife on acoustic guitar
and some vocals, along with a bass and drums. He is a real monster on that
Guitsteel and just hammered out amazing sounds on it all night. During the
first set between some great country numbers he did a killer version of
"Pipeline" which segued into "Secret Agent Man" and I don't think that I
have ever heard a better live version of either song. He also did the
Hendrix thing during "Sugarfoot Rag." It was certainty a contender for one of
the best shows that I have been to this year. I would think that even a
good percentage of the "don't like country" crowd would enjoy his live
  shows. He's that good.

2850.3The Browns have it licked !!PAKORA::JHYNDMANThu Nov 11 1993 21:2910
Speaking of Sugarfoot Rag,have any of you guys heard the version done
by a guitarist called Charlie Brown on an album by Rural Free Delivery?
It was a band put together by Eric Weissberg of Duelin' Banjo's fame
to cash in on the Deliverance bandwagon.(Mid 70's)
They called the track"Concrete Canyon Boogie" but it's Sugarfoot
Rag rocked up a LOT,and for me it was a real turning point in guitar.
BTW,the bass player was Tony Brown.

I was flicking through the channels on sunday and saw this guy play.
He was awesome....!It was some kind of show where they only played 1
song from each entertainer and I was sickened that he did only one tune
cuz this guy is a monster player!I think I may buy some of his albums.

I became a Junior Brown fan last month after seeing him play here in
Birmingham. He's an intense player and a real crowd pleaser. Got to get
    some of his recordings.
