2831.0. "Can you name the effect?" by MIMS::SMITH_JE () Thu Oct 14 1993 18:35

Just curious? In the song "PLEASE DON'T JUDAS ME" by NAZERETH on the
Hair of The Dog album. What kind of effect did they use to get the
sound achieved before the vocals even begin?

I know Manny Charlton, who played guitar on that album,so I gave him
a phone last night...he says the "bubbling sound" was recorded using
a Shure SM57 mike thro' a Lexicon reverb unit and the tape slowed down
to half speed, and the sound source was Pete Agnew, farting into an empty
beer pitcher ! No,seriously,it was a sound they came across on an old
ARP synth, and just held one key down while adjusting the modulation.

    			cheers,Jim.

    JIM,
Thanks for the long awaited answer. I've been wondering about this
strange sound for years.Do you know if those guys still play together?
And how would they recreate the sound Live or did they not play this
    live?
                                               Jeff

Nazareth are still playing,Dan Macafferty,Pete Agnew and Darryl Sweet
are still in the band, with Billy Rankin replacing Manny Charlton. They
tour a lot in Europe and Canada, and when they are home they play a lot
of small venues in the area.
Manny plays with a local band, and is set to do an album with them,
featuring some of his own songs.
According to a local newspaper,"a rock musician from the
Dunfermline area is the subject of a police investigation regarding a
quantity of illegal substances".One of the band alledgedly recieved
a sample of tour T Shirts from a New-York based company last Christmas,
in which they had included a liberal dusting of "finest New York Snow",
which had not been asked for in the invoice.Of course,an alert sniffer
dog at UK customs had no problem pointing this out,but the band member
who received the parcel was unaware of this "Christmas present" until
    police pounced.
As far as recreating the sound on the album goes,I don't think they
would have been able to,or even bother trying,as they were always kind
    of rough and ready.

    				Jim.
