2790.0. "Flatwound Strings" by POWDML::DAGG () Mon Aug 23 1993 14:12

    Any recommendations regarding flatwound guitar
    strings other than "don't use 'em"?

    I'm gonna try a set on my ES165. I've got
    D'Addario J21s on it now, which I love except for
    the string noise.

    I used to swear by flatwounds, but I guess they don't make them in real
    light gauges. I think I switched when I started using thinner strings.
    I always used to like the waay they feel compared to the round wound
    ones. The flats are a bit more $$$ too, I think.

There might be "ground-wound" strings for guitar too. I know there are
for bass. They're round wound and then ground flat, with a brighter tone
than flat-wound.  Expensive.

    I use Dadarrio Chromes on my archtops and I believe they come as light
    as .011 for the first string. They can be bought at Daddy's in Nashua.

    For a few years back in the 70s, I used Fender Smooth Wound 1500s sets.
    They were a compromise between flat and round. I liked them lots but
    then they became hard to find and I settled on D'Adderio XL110 and XL115
    sets. Does anybody know if there are smooth wound strings still produced
    by anyone?
2790.5Gonna try some GibsonsWITNES::DAGGMon Aug 30 1993 15:2512

    I ordered a couple sets of Gibson round wounds from
    Elderly over the weekend, one medium and one medium light
    gauge. Should be interesting, hopefully I'll like 'em.

    At $8.50 a set they're certainly not cheap! I'll keep
    a lookout for the other types mentioned in the previous
    replies.

    Thanks,

    Well, I got the Gibson medium gauge "flat wires" last weekend.
    I put 'em on, and they seem pretty good. Hard as heck to do any kind
    of bending, but for sliding around they feel and sound
    great.

    Not as bright as round wounds without the amp, so I use
    the amp more. I'm pretty surprised I like 'em, since
    I always thought flats sounded "thumpy".
