2779.0. "Bluegrass Guitar Practice Midi Files" by LILCPX::BULLARD (NINETIES..DECADEOFGOVERNMENTGREED) Thu Jul 29 1993 12:47

Flatpicking Bluegrass Guitar Midi Files:

The purpose of this file is to track uploads of bluegrass songs. I will take
care not to deposit any songs with known authors to prevent any copywrite
infringements (there's a ton of songs that meet that criteria). Most
arrangements are either from Steve Kaufman's book "Bluegrass Guitar Solo's
(that every parking lot picker should know)" Volume One, or from my guitar
instuctor Dennis Bailey (Flying W ranch, Colorado Banjo Champion and numerous
other awards). I will update the filename with each revision/addition so folks
will know when a change has been made (blugrs01.txt to blugrs02.txt....and
so on). I will also put an "*" by each song to indicate what changed or was
added since the revision.
I have written each song with 3 staffs. Staff one is acoustic guitar (steel)
solo, staff 2 is acoustic guitar (steel) rythym, staff 3 is acoustic bass.
I have dropped the octaves down from usual notation (guitar -1 octave, bass
-2 octaves) to play correctly with the windows 3.1 media player. If you read
these into a notation software you may want to edit the octaves back up to
correct notation (for reading) and drop playback to correct octave. Many of
these songs are meant to be capoed (usually 2nd fret) when playing with a
fiddle or mandolin, but following the notation would be a nightmare so I have
defaulted to uncapoed key. I will indicate what key these are wrote in and
the key they are usually played in. I use the Gravis Ultrasound card with
midi mapper and "general midi" configuration, so if your midi mapper is
configured correctly these should be ready "as is" for correct playback with
your soundcard/sgu.
You may find a postscript chord sheet (rythym) to these songs (and others) in:
copy lilcpx::disk$user:[bullard.public]chordmed.ps
one "|" per 1/2 measure (simplistically a <alternating> bass note and strum),
"*" means repeat line. Most bluegrass songs consist of an "a" part played
twice, and a "b" part played twice.

Since writing these takes away time from actual guitar practice, I have kept
them fairly simple....but feel free to improve them and share the results.

Waal now, afore I cast asparagus on "things bluegrass," I'd feel sorta
obliged to get *somewhere* near the facility on the frets (read:
blinding speed) which most bluegrassers seem to take for granite.

I *do* know a good one somewhat pertinent to bluegrass (told to me by a
bass player who also plays accordion):

I have written these out fairly slow :^) , at only 110 bpm 2/2 time.
The nice thing about midi is you can alter the tempo without
re-tuning... and it beats the heck out of an obnoxious metronome.
Besides, bluegrass solos need rythm accompanyment to be enjoyed.
Many of these songs are typically played around 130bpm, and if
ya wanna hear some real fast picking check out Ricky Skagg's Country
Boy on the Live in London album.....160bpm!
Now if I could just get my self to play cleanly over 100bpm....
