2664.0. "Teaching Suggestions?" by MSBCS::BELLEFEUILLE () Mon Jan 18 1993 11:29

    Hi,

I live in Mass. (actually ~4 miles from the Spitbrook facility). My son
has been taking lessons for about 5 months and is really getting into
it. Unfortunately, his teacher (a local townie) is about to take a job
which will make continued lessons impossible.

Any recommendations for teachers in the area? He's at at "basics" level
(basic music theory, chords, scales, a few riffs, etc.). He's 14. I
think it's important to find someone who is patient and enthusiastic
    about working with kids.

    Would appreciate suggestions.

    Thanks,

    Rich

Daddy's in S. Nashua on the Daniel Webster used to have a guy named
Bob Danials not sure about the Bob but last name was Danials. He
was a good teacher. Knowledgable in most styles. He was teaching a
friends son, and I felt the kid was progressing well. A girl I know
who had played guitar for a few years mostly chording went to him
for lessons on scales/lead. Her overall guitar playing improved
greatly. You might give them a call and see if he still teaches
there. The number for Daddy's is (603) 888-1160.
        Regards
          Bob

2664.2Wolf Marshall's books - look like a winnerFRETZ::HEISERGrace changes everythingMon Oct 03 1994 13:498
I was in a local sheet music store this weekend to get some piano books
and got to check out Wolf Marshall's latest entries. I'm seriously
thinking about picking them up! They're presented in a very logical
and organized manner, pretty much how I've always felt it should be
done. There's even CD's available with jam tracks for the application
    sections. Check them out!

Good question ;-) but Wolf's name is definitely on the cover ;-)

You knew it had to be good given his last name.

A lot of the books and videos I have leave gaps. They usually have no
organization or logic to their presentations. The gaps are where the
artist approaches a topic where they assume everyone knows all about it
and skip it. If it's a logical prerequisite to the next topic, they
leave you confused. I couldn't see such gaps in the books by Wolf that
    I skimmed through.

I always hated it when a teacher would say, "Play this scale!" Being a
software weenie I would ask "Why?" and would never receive a straight
answer other than "Because it works!" I'm not saying Wolf doesn't do
this, but this is an example of a "gap" that didn't fit my reasoning.

BTW - for those that are interested in such things... Wolf's credentials
in one of the books says he graduated from UCLA's music school.

I went and bought Wolf's first method book and companion songbook
yesterday. It was pretty basic so I'll probably get series 2-4 soon
(on order and will be in next week). The nice thing it did have is
all the theory application to popular music. Series 1 will be great
for my family members who want to pick up the instrument.

The series is called "The Wolf Marshall Guitar Method - Basics n" where
n goes from 1-4, (4 is Advanced). The companion songbooks are called
"Power Studies n" n being 1-4. Each book is available with a cassette or
CD study guide. He also has a $19.95 video out covering the same
    stuff.
