2629.0. "`79 Les Paul Custom - Value??" by MSBCS::BELLEFEUILLE () Tue Nov 24 1992 12:10

    Hi!,

I have a specific question re: the street value of a Les Paul Custom.
This particular one is at "Father's" in Nashua. It's (near as I can tell)
a 1979 natural Maple top/Mahogany body and it's BEAT. This guy must
have had one hell of a belt buckle because the back is really scratched
and gouged up. The pick guard is gone, and most of the gold plate has worn
from the P/U covers, bridge, etc. Top is not TOO bad but is also scratched.
Neck looks VG. Head dinged up a bit, but not bad

My view is that for the right price, this would be a neat restoration
project. (and a lot of work!)

Now the kicker. Price $899. The guy didn't seem very interested in
moving on the price, but my guess is he'd probably jump at anything
    over $750.

I checked a price book on used Gibsons, and couldn't find a value
anywhere near this for a unit in GOOD condition. (more like $3-400)

Any ideas on what this is worth? I'm figuring between $100/150 for
parts, replating or whatever materials are required. To do it right
(the only way I know) would probably cost ~ $2-250. including
professional body strip/refinish. What's it worth in primo condition. I'd
    appreciate any inputs on this.

    Thanks,

    Rich

I typically see that kind of Les Paul in pawn shops for under $600.
The problem is that really clean ones can draw some major bucks since
the friggin retail on a new one is creepin' upwards of $1700!
Musician's Friend isn't even publishing their prices in the catalog
anymore..."call for pricing". For a beater, I'd offer $500 and see
what happens, and that's if you really want a Les Paul.....remember a
new Am Std strat can be purchased for under $600....

You can find LP Customs in the Want Advertiser for $600 and less, and
they are advertised as "good" or "excellent" condition. Take a look at
the Daddy's Used Gear price list for another source.

IMHO, and maybe I'm wrong, but $750 is too high for the guitar you
    describe.

Hey Rich

I thought it was a very playable instrument, the price is reflective
of what people are willing to pay,I played a 1968 Les Paul Standard goldtop
with P90's the other day and the guy thought it was a bargin at $2k+.

> Now the kicker. Price $899. The guy didn't seem very interested in

I thought it was in better shape than you describe, but I'm more
concerned with how it sounds... It played nicer than most lespauls I've
tried lately..... I liked the blonde finish.......
It can't hurt to make an offer, pull out $600 in cash in front of
the store manager and see if he thinks about it. I believe someone has made
a mistake concerning the pricing as I mentioned it seemed awfully high also
and I'm sure they will get tired of hearing about it and eventually either
drop the price or ship it to another store.
I'd think it's worth whatever you want to pay for it..... As an
investment for the future well...... I'm not qualified on that one.....

$600, max - if you look around you can find a restoration candidate in
better shape for less than that. If not, send me the $600 and I'll get
one out of the LA Recycler for you. I've got a '78 LP Custom that
sounds like it's in better shape - paid $300 for it 8 or 9 years ago.

Many of the late '70's LPs are great players, with very comfortable,
nicely-shaped necks. Even so, the value of a Custom in what sounds like
    average condition is only $600-$700.

LPs from that period that are worth more are the Artisan, and the
25/50. Both go for around $1250-$1500 and are terrific instruments. I
especially like the 3-pickup version of the Artisan, but after standing
with one for 15 minutes, I have to switch to an LP-SG for at least an
hour to let my spine decompress.

Funny you should mention the Artisan; I just saw one in Boston,
fairly clean, three-pickup, for $1000. Pickups were non-original
though. A nice player. I've seen these with a real fugly color
stained top; this one was a pleasant medium brown.

    Wha? Around $700????
Geez... I wonder how much my 1971 LP (cherryburst) Custom is worth
    these days?

*never* sell yer Les Paul unless yer gonna upgrade it to a newer/better
Les Paul......they're good for the soul and round out the collection.

2629.10..Picked it up last night!!MSBCS::BELLEFEUILLETue Dec 01 1992 11:2117

    Well...,

I picked it up last night and it's a beauty. Natural maple top, three
piece maple neck (fretboard looks like ebony?), Mahogany body. One of
the of the original pick up was replaced by a Dimarzio(?).

I was surprised that there was no serial number on the back of the head
stock. The Control knob cover is missing and there is a date stamped
    inside (May 1977).

Anyway, it sounds great. It's been played, but is in very nice
    condition.

    Thanks again for inputs.

Final tally = $675. Guy wouldn't budge. Still a lot better than the
$899 price tag on the beater at "father's"
