2579.0. "Bargains" by MARX::SAKELARIS () Mon Aug 31 1992 17:22

How about this for a topic. If from time to time, we hear of or see
stuff for sale at bargain prices, like in the Want Advertiser, or the
kid down the road ran outta nose candy is wanting to sell his stuff
cheap post it here. Also, maybe you want to list something you might be
interested in if the price was right.

2579.1LP, Marshall CabMARX::SAKELARISMon Aug 31 1992 17:287
I might be interested in a used LP. Anybody see anything interesting in
    the Want Advertiser or whatever?

Another thing is that I think my "The Twin" would look good sitting on
top of a Marshall Cab. Any bargains?

On your way into work on Tuesday, stop by the local 7-11 and grab the
WantAdvertiser. If not there, get it at lunch.

Scan the musical instrument and musical acc. sections. Mark any good
    items.

Beat the rest of us to it.

2579.4great deal on a "Classic 60"MILKWY::JACQUESVintage taste, reissue budgetWed Sep 02 1992 14:1111
Two weeks ago, there was an ad in the Want Ads for a brand new
Les Paul classic 60, cherry sunburst, played 1 hour. It was priced
at $600.00 firm. This is an EXCELLANT price for a classic 60. I'm
surprised to even see it listed, as these have only been available
for a short time. Regular Classic 60's like this sell for about $1300.
Classic 60's with flamed maple tops sell for about $1700.

I'm not surprised that this guitar is no longer listed in the
want ads. It probably sold the same day it appeared.

2579.5It was a bargain......for meLEDS::ORSIStimpy's Magic Nose GoblinsWed Sep 02 1992 15:0730
I don't know if this belongs here but.......
A couple of weeks ago, there was an ad in the Worcester T+G that
read "Fender Pro Reverb amplifier, 1968, for that clean sound, $400".
So I called and the guy says it's a blackface. I started to drool.
I went over to check it out with $400 in my hand and was met at the door
by a pimply faced dood who 'splained to me that he was going back to
school and wanted to sell the amp soon. So I plug in my Strat and power
it on only to find out that it isn't working very well at all. No gain
and severe distortion from the reverb channel, almost nothing from the
other, some hardware and the rear panels missing, dirty, but the tolex
and grill cloth was in decent shape. I commented that it "was a mess",
packed up my guitar ready to leave and he says that he just wants to get
rid of it. I said "for how much?". He says "$250". I thought that there
might be something really bad wrong with it, so I left without it. I was
there about 15 minutes, and all that time he's taking calls for the thing.
     I was pretty disappointed.
BUT...everyday for a week, the ad for the Pro is still in there. So I
call, and sure enough, he still has the thing. I offer him $200, but he
tells me some guy just called and offered him $300 bucks over the phone,
and I said, "yeah, but he hasn't played it yet." I told him to call me
if he changes his mind. Next day he calls and I go pick it up for $200.
To make a long story even longer, I brought it home, and took it apart.
Inside the chassis, it's stamped 3-8-65, twice. I sussed it out and had
to replace a resistor, resoldered another, borrow tubes from my Bandmaster
head, re-biased it, give it a little TLC and it came back to life. I
suppose you could say it was a bargain.

Yep, see there! Now this is a good example of the utility of this
topic. I know I coulda bought the Want Advertiser myself if I were
lookin for something. From time to time we all run into
or hear of deals that maybe we're not interested in, but our other
tone bros might be - if for no other reason than just for the
curiosity factor. And myself, I'm always at least curious.

BTW - My ol' lady gets real nervous when she see's me readin thru the

like "Well I hope you're looking for another washing machine for us, or
how about another kitchen table, or what about ...."

I saw in Daddy's Nashua that they had a Carvin 60W amp, tubes (2
    6l6's), 1X12". They're asking $259 for it. Didn't play it, never even
played a Carvin amp, but my guess is that its a pretty good amp, and
    the money is right.

They also had a Marshall JCM900 combo w 1X12 for $950 or thereabouts.

I think Larry V. still has his 100wt Marshall combo for sale...
and it's a lot cheaper than 9 bills if I remember correctly.

I'll also mention here (repeating what I said in 1954) that
ACE Loans on Platte in Colorado Springs has a Metaltronix/Perfect
Connection SP1000 for approx. $200 and a ADA Mp1 for approx. $200.

Someone looking to build a guitar rack from hell should definately
check this rig out!

> Lotta bucks for that baby!

Remember when you're comparing these two that:

    1) the Carvin is used, the Marshall is new.
    2) the Marshall is vastly overpriced, a normal price for a new 1x12 JCM900
Dual Reverb 50wt combo should be in the $700-$750 range. For $950
you should be able to get a nice new 2x12 JCM900 DR combo and about
       $100 in change.

FWIW, the Carvin is probably either an XT112 (which goes for $469 new)
or it's predecessor the X60 (similar price as I remember). They're
great sounding amps! Sounds like a good deal.

Have the prices gone up in the last year and a half or so? I saw them

No opportunity (or room) to try out anything, but if you

I was quite underwhelmed. They didn't have that much stuff, and no power amps
(which is what I was looking for). An example of their "bargain prices" was
a Tascam 424 for $445 - Daddy's has them on sale occassionly for $429, and I
bought mine over 6 months ago for $399 new!

I was somewhat *_OVERWHELMED_* by the number of people
(friends of Ken ? (-: ) that were there - - but underwhelmed by the
"bargains".

Lessee; Les Paul Studio for $489, OK, but they regularly sell
	them for $499. Zoom 9030 (I think) multi-effects processor
for $519, I think this lists for ~$899, who pays list ?
Alesis quadra-verb was $389, I think the quadra-verb GT was
$429 - this is all from memory. Lots of no-name acoustic
	guitars were being bought.
Alesis HR-16 drum machine $200, one had no power bug, the
other had no midi cable, no big deal, for another ~$5 either
one would be OK - I think these were intro'd at ~$450 a few
years ago. Cords to get you close to your amp (3 ft) for
	$2.99, or 4 for $10 (to get you 4 times closer ?)
Someone got a K1200 rack mount synth for $600. They seemed to
be running two cash registers *_WITH LINES_* downstairs,
	people were buying - - I wasn't.
