2566.0. "Guitarnotes tape vol. V" by GUCCI::HERB (Al is the *first* name) Mon Aug 10 1992 02:29

So where is the GUITARnotes tape vol. V? I just discovered all
notes about the tapes and I have about 70 songs of my own
I made on a 4track. I'm ready to send in a few songs for vol. 5!
Also who can I send some blank tapes tapes to to get a copy of the
previous four tapes? Master copies are preferred but not 2nd generation
    is ok.

I don't think anyone's started planning a Vol. V yet. Anyone up for
    it?

How about a guitar notes tape with GUITAR being the featured
    	instrument instead of vocals ??

How about an instrumental only tape? Maybe, like the recent
    	Guitar Player, a Blues tape?

Something that wouldn't fit (or be of interest ;^) to a
    	musicnotes or commusic tape?

I'd be willing to compile G_N_5 - I've got a couple tunes to submit.
Instrumental stuff would be cool, but I think that it shouldn't be
mandatory, as not everyone is a instrumental type player. Like me
(for instance :) - my stuff comes as part of a band, or you wouldn't
    wanna hear it. :)

I certainly don't have the chops or the time to sit down and do a

I was also wondering which tape out of the four do you all think
was the best music on it?

I have only wrote one instrumental in my life and all it is is a
E C D E progression... I use the vocals to enhance to song.. nobody
would want to hearme solo for over 20 seconds anyway..

I'm in favor of a "open" submission policy of both instrumental and
vocal songs. Personally I find instrumental tunes to be kind of
dull. Besides, I have a bunch of vocal tunes ready or almost ready
     to be submitted. ;^)

Well, If any of Coops stuff is on the tape, I'd be REAL interested in
getting a copy (not so sure I'd subject anyone to my playing though.)
I heard his stuff with Hardball and in heavy metal, I gotta admit that
its about the best playing I've heard on a tape. I thought the "best"
was a rush type power trio I knew years ago, but Coops stuff tops it.
In my opinion, its really worth a listen.

Bulldawg,

You could probably rent (beg, borrow or steal) a quality 4 track portastudio
of one kind or another. The degree of skill you need to have varies with the
gear you use. A simple four track cassette based machine is pretty easy to
become a wiz at...

Beware though - you can catch a MAJOR bug doin' this... It's a LOT of fun,
and 4 tracks become a little limited if you catch the bug. :) Then you
have to have an 8 track, then a rack full of EQ's, compressors, gates,
verbs, delays etc...etc...

There is an excellent conference on home recording. Hit KP7 or SELECT to
enter it into your notebook. :)

I bought some great jam tapes at Wood'n Strings in Arlington put out
by The Wolfman School of Music (really Bob Wolfman in his house with a
16 track in the basement and some great backup musicians). There's 12
10 minute tracks; each is a different key and a different style. There's
"Funky Chicago in Ab","Slow Blues in G","Memphis Blues in D", etc.
They're fully produced with drums, bass, keyboard fills, organ, etc. Ten
minutes is just about right for me. It takes at least 5 minutes to get into
the groove and figure what position to play. Lots of fun. He has his tapes
in quite a few stores, Hot Lick's, etc. You can order direct from him

I have the Classic Rock one and don't really like it very
much. It's heavier than what I expected. Can't imagine
what the metal one sounds like.

Modern Blues has tunes "in the Style of" Clapton, Stevie
Ray, Gary Moore, ZZ Top, George Thorogood, and others.
Blues is closer to I-IV-V with a few Stormy Monday moves
for good measure. Both are really fun.

Jazz is harder but probably the best sounding tape to my
ears. Country is fun for the major riffs and chicken pickin'.

I don't know - I guess Classic Rock just sounds like a very
mediocre band where it's pretty easy to do Blues backing tracks.
Classic has "songs" with predetermined signature riffs.

Modern Blues has the I-IV-V's as well as one very similar
to Still Got the Blues by Gary Moore. There's a few that
modulate like the ZZ Top one (sounds like one where he sings
    	"ah, how, how, how").

None are difficult but it's beyond the basic I-IV-V.

OK, I'm gettin' close. I got my personal band of studio musicians
(Modern Blues backing tape), I've got my stereo to play it on, I've got
my strat, my lse paul, my dean markley, my fingers, and a boom box to
    reord all this stuff.

I started last night. After a couple of takes, I got the volume of the
"band" and my amp balanced. I made a few cuts, and playied them back
in my good stereo. Sounds pretty dam acceptable for a novice
    submission!

I want to play louder (for tone purposes), however, and I'm not able to
turn up the "band" much more to match my amps "good tone" volume.

What'll work?: (my boom box has only a condensor mic, so I can only
    record at one level/place).

    * turn the amp backwards?
    * cover the speaker with a towel?
    * move the amp farther away?

    any sugesstions?

Sure dude... Play around with the mike positioning and you may be able
to find a spot where it all works. You know, put it closer to the rest
of the band, point it at them (presuming it's a cartoid response
    pattern).

Turning your amp to face a wall or putting something like a big pile of
pillows or a table turned on it's side a couple of feet directly in
front of it may help. If not, try putting the amp in another room and
mike it through the PA so you can get a consistant level.

BTW, those condensor mikes in boom boxes suck. I've gotten much
better results using a cheap normal home cassette deck and a mike.
Even with a very inexpensive mike it works out better, since you don't
have it trying to do "automatic level setting" for you, so you don't
    hear things changing and all.

I've recorded a lot of band rehearsals using inexpensive equipment,
just for reference purposes, and have gotten decent results using these
techniques. I just did one of these last night with an SM57 going into
an XLR to 1/4" transformer into a Y-cord, into a cheezy home stereo
cassette deck that I bought new for $30 about 7 years ago. There were
a couple of old office partitions (dec surplus) between the drums and
the PA/Bass amps and the guitar amp (a Marshall 1/2 stack) was about 10
feet away pointing slightly off axis from the mike. Sounded pretty
    decent!

IMHO, recording is one of the BESt ways to improve your chops.
You record and listen, and record and listen... It's tough to
get past the "awwww man" stage, because we are ALL super-critical
of our chops. But just remember, it's the listener who decides,
not you. Hang in there BULLDAWG !

Steve, I've noticed that since I got my 4 track about a year ago that
it seems sit idle waiting for me to get a round tuit. And the reason I
never seem to get one (a round tuit) is for exactly the same reasons you

obvious mistakes, because we just put the tape on and played.
If we had fussed around with it it would never have gotten

time i nail down what i think i want, i'm bored with it and you can
hear the boredom. What is making it even worse is I have some major
neck whoes which keep me off the high e string for anything above C
    (eight fret). Talk about limiting....

I submitted a long, very crude, poorly played song for Git 4 which

This all sounds sooooo familiar....I think a lot of the problem is the
time factor. When you have lots of time to spend on one track, your own
multitrack, etc, you tend to labor over & over to get it sounding *just
right*,whereas, paying for studio time, you kinda "make do" when it
    sounds reasonable.
I remember the first time I borrowed a four-track,I had it for
three days, taped eight numbers, playing all the instruments, and mixed
them to cassette.I wasn't too happy with the final result, but the other
day I found the tape, put it on,and was amazed how good they sounded.
The "liveness" was streets ahead of the feel I get now on the 8-track,
spending days/weeks on one song !

3 different takes, one with "clean loud strat", one with "tube

I donno, that approach doesn't seem to work for me. The best solo I
ever captured on tape was after about 20 takes and 4 hours work on that
one solo, when my fingertips on my left hand felt like they were gonna
burst. My buddy's going "just hang it up and come back to it later"
right before and I'm like, "No, I just about have it, one more take..."
I ended up taking two tracks and mixing them. The first half of one
was best, and the second half of the other was best, so I just faded
'em. It was still far from mistake-free, but it had a good "feel" to
it, so I left it. Several other people have commented that it was the
best solo of mine that they'd heard.

'Course I didn't have anything planned out for that one ahead of time,
so a lot of it was just experimentation to find what I wanted. Most
    don't take me that long.

Don't get exited Coop, I'm still the simple bluesman you knew. There
are several "copy-cat" tunes on this backing tape. One titled
"Sidewalk Surfing" is basically a cover of "Surfing with the Alien".
There's another slow ballad type that covers an EJ or Satch (I forget)
tune. It's basically a I IV V, real pretty thang that modulates back
and forth from major to minor progressions. I thought I might add a
"nice" lead.....It's called "Forever Yours" on the backing tape.

Well now I have 3 versions of "Bulldawgs Hate Mondays". I feel the 3rd
is the best, but I may send all three to Coop. All 3 are very simple,
no flash, no special FX, no finger tapping, no whammy bar, blues. Just
the Am Standard Strat thru a (cranked) Dean Markley with a little
reverb. The backing tape is played so that the submission has
basically drums, bass, and me on lead; rythm guitar can barely be heard.
On all 3 versions, the very first lick is recorded too loud....I guess my
boom box has a "leveling" period in the mic. The tone/acoustics sound like
somebody carried a boom box into one of those little smokey blues bars and
recorded a jam from the back of the club.......quite authentic. Quality is
at the low end, due to recording equipment, but the chops/style are me.

A month or so! You mean you guys aren't gonna do like me and just
throw something primal together and send it in. Sheesh, if I'd know it
was gonna be sum kinda professional effort, I'da rented a studio and a

I'm not much ahead of you. I sent Coop 3 takes of the same song, and
I still can't decide which one to have him enter on the master. #1 is
smoother, cleaner, and tastier. #2 sucks and is full of mistakes. #3
is higher in energy, but rougher than #1. I 'feel' like #3 is my fav,
but I have had 5 opinions from a cross section of folks from guitar

2566.195If you want a copy....read on!!DRTBYK::COOPEREx-Squeeze Me ? Baking Powder ?Wed Mar 17 1993 15:5927
Here it is:

If you want a copy of the tape (upon completion), send me your name and address.

Also, specify which of the following will work for you:

1. I supply a MAXELL XLII, or similar quality tape (high bias), envelop
and postage - you pay whatever it costs to purchase the tape and ship
    it to you.

2. You send ME a tape of your choice (C90), and a pre-paid postage envelope.

3. Submittees (izzat a word) can specify that I record over their submission
tape and return... Submittees owe me a beer for postage, next time I'm in
    Mass. :-)

4. Greg gets his tape back with the whole thing on it, plus a copy of Becks
GuitarShop, Fastway, Contagious, and a guitar-toy catalog. :-)

I'll dub all the material onto DAT, and buzz copies from it... Should make
for decent quality.

Ideas/sugesstions??

I'm all ears!

One particularly person asked me to send their submission back to them.
He was apparently upset that that I let the deadline slip in order to
have a tape that was a little more than half full...

I have some great submissions already, and the last one is (IMHO) worth
waiting a couple more days for. This will be a GREAT tape!!

    Yesterday. :-)

    (Glad you prompted me...)

Everyone who submitted stuff and wanted me to tape over their
submission and return their tape got their copy mailed yesterday...
Those who submitted (I love this S&M talk :-) and included a tape
got theirs mailed yesterday, along with their submission (this
means my 'spoke tying' friend JD :-).

Everyone who asked me to provide a tape have to wait until I can get
to Sams Wholesale to buy a box of XLII's. I'll try to get their
    tonight after work (barring emergencies).

As I'm dubbing copies tonight, I'll sit down at the PC and make
some notes on the tape contents and post. I'll also upload the
"j-cards" that I made in Postscript format.

I apologize for this taking longer than I expected. I've had a
project going in my studio, and that takes up most of my spare time.
Between the studio stuff, work, and band rehearsals I've been swamped!
    I appreciate eveyones patience!
