This is six, once you see the list, perhaps you'll know why I just can
not pair it down to 5 (in no particular order):

Steve Morse - "Broad Street Strut"
Jeff Beck - "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat"
Jimmy Page - "Since I've Been Lovin You"
	    Frank Zappa - "Fifty-fifty"
	    Dave Gilmour - Comfortably Numb

This solo is PERFECT for the song.

o Brad Gillis on Sister Christian

I think Beck is the only other guy who has packed this
        much "expression" in a solo.

o	Larry Carlton on Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne". (Really

I never have been a big Beatles fan, so that's one of the reasons I
can't vision GH doing much more than chords. Besides, he doesn't do
    any tapping. 8^)

One of my major "wouldn't it be great"'s in music is for George
to get a great band of backing musicians and do a totally
instrumental album. From ballads to blues to fusion to
country to hard rock... Heck, John and Paul never gave him
more than a few bars in the middle and he could get his rocks
off in one album to make up for it.

We'd all get one big time lesson in taste, melody, execution,
    	and style!!

The liner to the Cream album "Goodbye" clearly states that there is a
rhythm guitar on "Badge", that's George under the pseudonym "L'Angelo
Mysterioso" since EMI refused to let the Beatles record for any other
record label. The original recording credits the songwriting to
Clapton only, later releases added Harrison's name.

Other famed Beatle pseudonyms found on album credits:

    George Harrysong

Yes, GH plays rhythm on "Badge", but not the chimey bridge to solo.
That's Clapton, on a prototype of one of the first chorus boxes.
    Harrison's only part on that cut is a muted, steady rhythm click;
ya gotta listen close to hear it. Eric also plays the solo of course
(one of my favorites I might add).

The preceeding direct from Clapton's mouth, heard on one of those
    radio interview/retrospectives.

I gotta admit, I always thought the bridge was Harrison too.

You'll never catch GH ripping off a solo improv. He does however have
enough class and taste to put work into the solo's he does play. If
you go back to 62-63, Beatles playing was a loud rocking interplay of
rythm and lead, but lead guitar did not have a whole lot of presence
other than Duane Eddy, Chuck Berry and the Ventures. The Beatles did
play some real grunged Berry back a then...and they quit just before

Clearly that's the confusion. I know Knofler has worked with so many
other artists, I just kind of thought maybe that was the song. My
    error.

I don't know if this has been beaten to death in here someplace else,
    but...

Ever wonder where the title "Badge" came from? When they were recording
Goodbye (cream), Clapton & Harrison had worked out the tune we all know
as "Badge", but had no title. Anyway, the story goes, they had it
written out on a piece of notebook paper. Harrison looked at it from
upside down and said "Badge? What's that mean?" He was looking at the
word "bridge" (to indicate the middle section). They both thought it
was so funny (in a psychedelic sort of daze, I would imagine) that they
decided to name the song "Badge". Source: Geoffrey Guiliano's biography
    of GH: "Dark Horse".

Also: Harrison playing through a leslie (quite popular in those days -
but NOT a "early prototype of a chorus box." Check out Abbey road or
    Blind Faith:Presence of the Lord).

Also Also: Who can tell us what SWLABR stands for? Hint: The "B" and
"R" are featured prominently in the lyrics of the song.

straight from the man (Clapton) himself.

Yeah...I saw that article myself. But, in my mind, the question is
    still up for grabs.

Consider Harrison's style...that particular chordal figure turns up
in many places in Beatles music, from "Here Comes the Sun," to tons
    of Abbey Road stuff.

In fact, think of the opening figure to Ringo Starr's (solo) song,
"It Don't Come Easy." Again, that same sort of chorused, flanged,
    arpeggiated chord picking.

Now, this type of thing shows up in a Clapton song that Harrison played
on. Seems reasonable that he did it...it's certainly more like his
    style than Eric's.

This is hardly a question of whether Clapton *could* play it. Of
course he could. But that sort of figure really isn't associated
    with Clapton.

No flames intended...if Eric said, "I did it," I would guess that means
he did. As trivia buffs know, Harrison played on Badge in exchange
for Clapton playing on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and it's
pretty obvious which guitar player is which on *that* song...I mean,
George hasn't been walking around claiming he played the solo.

Anyhow, I think the argument is kind of interesting. If Clapton
actually didn't do it, I don't know why he would say he did. I did
hear that he and Harrison did *not* wind up their joint tour of
    Japan on very good terms.

And, in closing, I think it important to remember that heroin was
a big part of both of their lives at one point or another.

Yeah, I agree. The assumption was always that Harrison had done that
part *because* he used that sound in a number of subsequent recordings
of his own. I believe this also came up in the interview and it was
suggested that Clapton's part on Badge is where George got the idea for
that sound in the first place.

Btw, Clapton was very specific about how this all went. He describes
how he had the guitar with chorus on live for the whole first part
of the song and sat there deadening the strings with his hands to
keep it quiet before the intro. Not sure why they didn't just punch
it in; maybe they couldn't get the punch-in quiet enough. The solo was
    of course overdubbed later.

As I said, this was a prototype chorus box, supposedly one of the first
    in existence.

Ha ha, the heroin connection eh? Maybe it was the giant green spider in
the corner who actually played that intro :-)

The chorus decended from the guitar thru leslie first employed in
april-may 1966 during the making of revolver. It started with Geoff
Emerick trying to obey a lennon request that is voice sound like
4000 chanting buddist monks for "Tomorrow Never Knows", and from
there they tried *everything* thru the leslie. Must of been real nice
to be in a situation where you tell the Company to buzz off while you
change your sound (try that today)

Chorus' are far easier & cheaper, but them old whirling horns sure made
lot's of things sound pretty neat!

Just heard a song that I haven't heard in quite some time, and I
realized it has a solo that I wanna mention. It's one my favorite
"strat sounding" solos, from who I consider a really tasty lix master.
It is the solo in Journey's "When the Lights Go Down in the
City"....very nice! BTW, I've forgotten the guitartsts' name and his
history in the business.... Have we discussed him in the "honorable
    mention" note?

Nice Choice Steve......

That would be Neil Schon (Journey) I believe. I was just listening to some
Journey this morning. That boy can play. Nope not a shredder, but wicked
tasteful and expressive.

I was thinking on my ride into work that I should bring him up in the
"Honerable Mention" note. I'm sure someone has.

It was Santana who gave Neil his break into the business. Neil was a
young 16 yr old at the time and appears opposite Santana in their
second album - the name of which escapes me at the moment. Throughout
the album you can definitely tell who is playing what. BTW, one of the best
tunes from that album is "Toussaint L'Overture". The guitar work in
that tune gives me goosebumps to this very day.

Although Santana gave him his break, it was Greg Rollie (Santana
keybordist and main singer at the time) who actually introduced Neil to
    Santana.

Well known story is that Neil turned down an offer to play in Derek
and the Dominoes to go with Santana, cause he figured Carlos would give
him more solo space than Eric would.

Neil shines on that "Just a city boy, ..." tune too. Now that you

I've heard a few of the new Neil Schon solos in the new Hardline
CD and he's doing a little more shredding than in the past two bands,
Journey and Bad English. I'd say he usually manages to play very well
in context, the right stuff, the right amount, at the right time -
...and make many $$$$ to boot!
