2534.0. "How to get copies of NOTERs tapes" by DABEAN::LOUVAT () Thu Jun 04 1992 11:17

I just got through paroooozing thru some 1991 notes and ran across
note #2277 regarding tons of recordings that many have made and with
the explaination of various techniques of doing so.

My question is:HOW CAN I GET SOME OF THESE TO LISTEN TO? Or are they
available to be had at all?

What really interested me was the note on the classical recordings. I
am by no stretch of the imagination capable of doing classical pieces
on the guitar but I am a great listener and appreciator of those so
    talented in that area.

I too do some multitrack recording in my home using a Teac 3344 R/R
and a cheap Vesta-fire 4-track cassette only to mix down to a top of
their line Radio-Sham cassette. The finished product isn't too shabby
considering the equipment, but it helps me keep my sanity in as much as
I'm not playing out any more.

Anyway, if anyone can help me to get some of these recordings,(or some
    copies there-of), I'd be grateful.

Well, if your into classical stuff, the tape we finished recording
last night probably wouldn't be of interest to you...

But, generally - just send some mail to the note author. Swaps are
always fun, perhaps an offer to reimburse for tape etc...

BTW - I modified the title of this topic...

My band "CoNtaGiOus has a 4 song demo thats available. Please send me
vaxmail if you are interested. There are reviews on the tape in the
HM note 806. Now a little about the band.

Contagious is a local Boston Based band that plays Heavy Rock. The sound
is sort of a cross between FNM, Led ZEP, Old Sabbath and Soundgarden.
The current band lineup has been together since 4/91. We have
played at many of the clubs in the Boston area and have had good luck
in playing with a few National acts. The current band lineup is as follows:

    Ed-d Newbert VOCALS
    Jim Texiera Guitar and vocals
    Marc Stella Bass and Vocals
    Bob Mercier Drums

    Thanks,

I have copies of ALL the COMMUSIC tape (including the original masters
for some of them) and all of the GUITARNOTES tapes.

Your best bet would be to try and get them thru the normal channels
(i.e. the people that have the masters) but if you or anyone else
wants copies, I can make them for you (although it might take awhile
    to do).

Send me mail if you're interested.

Re .4: Wow, Bob, way way way cool! I think you and your band are
travelling a road many of us would like to try.

When your album is successful, do you plan to keep your day gig?

Can we get backstage tickets when CoNtaGiOus plays Foxboro or the
    Centrum?

    Dang, that's great!

We are all very excited. Th day job will be gone if we go on the road.
They are talking tour support for 6 week tours at a time. Plus we
have a video in the contract for each album. Relativity seems like
an awesome label. We are on the VP of A&R's roster of bands so he's
got some major clout in getting what he wants. He's planning on
marketing the album full blown; magazines,MTV,Endcaps in stores, etc.

Everything is happening so fast that its a bit overwhelming!

Well I'll be damned. One of our own is on the verge of "making it".
Bob, for all of us who just daydream about being where you are and
having the chance that you have, would you please keep us informed
about what's happening to your group? I'm sure it'd make for intersting
reading. As a matter of fact, how'd you get to this point? Tell us
    about your band.

    sakman-

    .2 describes the band

We made the demo on a Tascam 488 cassette based 8track with 4 songs.
The tape was done in our rehersal space...produced and mixed by the
band and one of our friends, Dave Leitch, who will be the assistant
engineer on the 1st album. After the tape was done, I picked up the
Recording Sourcebook and started sending tapes to all of the indies
who accept un-solicited material. I sent the tape to Relativity. The
person i sent it to doesnt even work there anymore. Some how it ended
up on the VP's desk....he immediatley loved the music and brought
the president in for a listen who also thought the stuff was great.
I got a call that day and a showcase was booked at TCB studio in
Boston. The label thought the showcase was very good. Thats when
the lawyer negotiations started....The label came up again to see us
at a club on Aug 12th. They brought in local buyers from Strawberries
and Newbury comics and their local Relativity staff. All of them were
"totally" floored by the show....They were SOOOO impressed, so they say.
The deal was signed on Aug 17th!!!! We have been told that we are
going to get HUGE marketing and as much press as possible.

The totally amazing thing is that I had only sent the tape to
Relativity 5 days before I got the call from them. This guy gets
    500+ tapes/CDS a week.

    I will keep you posted!

these guys are going somewhere. Talent and hard work do pay off

Hey Bob, thanx for the info. This is interesting stuff. You mentioned
that you had played opposite some big acts. Who were they?

Another thing I think we'd all find interesting is the $$$ aspect. Now
I'm not trying to get a peek into your wallet. But like I said, I think
we'd all be intersted in knowing about your band's generic financial
reward as you'd care to share it. Many of us figured a long time ago
that we gotta pay the bills, and the mortgage, feed the family, fix
the car etc. and following the dream ain't gonna do it. I know I'd love
to see someone whom I have some connection to (even tho it is only thru this
medium) be able to do just that by following his dream.

Keep us posted, and also don't forget to tell us where you're playing.
I'm not confident it's my kind of music, but hell - if all of us show up
at a gig it can't help but be a boost, eh?

2534.13Give you some insightNEMAIL::MERCIERI tHinK,TheRe4 iM nOt a gYm TeacHeRFri Aug 28 1992 13:0634
Thanks Rick! I had a feeling that the band was gonna take off at some
point in time....we just worked hard, kept our heads on straight (NO
EGO's whatsoever) and pushed the material out into the market . For us,
    That combination worked!

    Sakman,

Big Acts?.....not really...not really.....weve played with White Trash
and Tuff before. They are national, but not to big. As far as the money
picture....I dont want to get specific.....The advance for the album is
what we wanted....not to much....not to little. As far as following a
dream....I have a wife and 3 young kids at home so I am very concerned
about finances, I have been told by the other band members that they
will give some of thier cut to help out....they all know my situation
with the family and are willing to do whatever it takes to make it
happen, even if they have to sacrafice a bit. They also know that if
I wasnt in the band, this wouldnt be happening now; I was the only one
to do all of the tape shopping. The band has been together for 4 years,
Ive been in it for 1 1/2 years. Before my arrival, nobody really
pushed the band. The label has also agreed to help me out personally,
because of my family situation. Beyond that we will get our cash flow
from Royalties, Mechanical Royalties, BMI or ASCAP, Merchandising and
shows that we play.....That might seem like alot of sources of money,
but remember alot of different people get cuts out of that. (except the
    merchandising and publishing)

So overall----Im nervous for financial reasons and having to leave my
family for tours, but this has been my dream for 20
years. Not many people get to pursue their dreams. So
Im gonna go for it....whats really good is that my family
    		  is behind me 100%

Wow, you're going to record a whole album in less then two weeks? Can

2534.16NEMAIL::MERCIEREnd of SilenceMon Aug 31 1992 18:488
    Greg,

2 weeks is for everything. Our material is well rehersed and
traditionally we have been very fast with basics and overdubs. The
biggest job will be acheiving the correct sounds and the final mixing.
If we need more then 2 weeks, it wont be a problem.

Two weeks should be enough - keep in mind that its just an EP, not a full
album. So you're only talking 5-6 songs, tops.....

I thought the album was first. Yeah, I guess I could see it for an EP,
    especially if they're well rehearsed.

It's just that you hear so much about people taking months and months
    to produce albums these days...
