2532.0. "Guitar Player Glossary of Terminology" by WLDWST::RICHARDS_S (IwasBorntoRock,SwornToRock) Thu May 28 1992 19:45

Hey all! I'm new to this file (and guitar for that matter) and
couldn't locate a topic on this, so I started this one. What I need
is a hand on knowing the definitions of guitar terminology. I'm
familiar with basic terms, but some of it goes right over my head.
Any and all help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance. 8)

I know this is vague, but all of them. There's bound to be plenty
I don't know, and sure to be some that I do. I guess just start firing
away at them. It may even give me a better insight on what I am
    familiar with.

Thanks, this helps, is there a topic on the definitions in theory?
Such as diatonic, pentatonic etc..... This notes file is soooo huge
I don't have the time to go through it all, and am not sure what to
ask for in dir/title . Sorry if I duplicated.

    Sorry-
In the band I'm in, a CLAM is a mistake made while performing a song.
It can be anything from a wrong cord, to an off key note, to a dropped
stick. we even occasionally keep score. It's more of a band joke than
    a legitimate term. 8^)

My favorite band term of ours is "Jazz Note"- Any note that starts off
wrong but is quickly corrected. The quicker the better.
    Example:
    The Right Way - A-D-F-G
    Jazz Note Way - A-D-E>F-G
                               ^^^
                            (jazz note)

note: There is often a VERY fine line between a Jazz note and a CLAM

    This reminds me of something,,...

I was rolling on the floor on e night when Arsenio had Spinal Tap
    on his show,..

Some of the more memorable lines were:

Aresenio: " They say you are the loudest band in the world"

    Lead Singer dude: "What?"

Nigel: "Oh yes ,. we play as loud as we can. I mean we've matured now,
and we feel we're really all the Tap we can be. We're proud of
our music and we're not afraid to play it loud because we've all
really become exceelnet musicians,. you know we don't make
mistakes,.. noy like those jazz players,.. they're always making
mistakes,. thats why they have to play so quietly...You know
jazz is really based entirely on mistakes

    	:-)

Then there was a deal about "trouser" makeup which might be a bit
risque for a family conference such as this..

I was losing it,.. If they were only as good musicians as they
are actors/commedians they'd be a force to contend with...

A banjo player I know once confided that when he made a mistake,

I read a similar thing in an interview with a guitar player, about
repeating a mistake so that it sounded intentional. I think it was
    Dickie Betts.

Personally, I think I'd rather people think I made a mistake rather
thinking I didn't know how to play in key...

2532.17The Origin of the Clam!SALEM::NELSON_DTue Jun 02 1992 14:4819
    Re: Clams
Is this a term that other musicians use? When I wrote my previous note
I couldn't remember how it got started in our band. But after digging
up a few of my own at rehearsal last night ;^) I remembered.

An ex-bandmember of ours had a tape of Buddy Rich chewing out his band
on the bus after a show. His saxaphone player recorded it one night
without him knowing it. He went up and down the bus raving at everyone
telling them they s*cked and that they were all 2 bit musicians. He
stopped in front of one guy "And what the f**k were you doin' out
there tonight? I've never heard so many CLAMS in my life. I could stop
in the next P*ss hole little town and replace you in 5 minutes. etc."
Then the guy made the mistake of saying something back to him. Couldn't
make out what it was but Buddy hit the roof. He started yelling for the
driver to stop the bus and told the guy to get off. He was totaly out
of control for the entire side of the cassette and was still going when
it stopped. He sounded either wasted or insane. I gotta try and get a
    copy of that.
    -dave-

CLAM is a horn player's term. It's when your embrouchure collapses
during a note and instead of hearing "Baaa" you hear "Brrpppt".

CHOPS appears also to be another horn player's term. If you want
a good idea of it's origin, get a look at a photo of Dizzy when
	he's blowing his horn.

Those Buddy Rich tapes are infamous. A friend of mine says he even saw a
*comic book* with all the dialogue taken from the tapes!!

In that vein, here's a sick joke:

A horn player gets up one morning and calls Buddy Rich's house.

    Buddy's widow answers, "Hello?"

    "Hi, is Buddy home?"

"I'm sorry, but Buddy is dead".

So he hangs up, but the next day calls again. On the third day, he
calls again. Buddy's widow is getting a bit upset and says, "Look, I
    told you...Buddy is dead!".

The horn player says "Yeah, I know, I just like to hear it!"
