2527.0. "Wilde solo!" by ESKIMO::AUSTIN () Sat May 16 1992 09:54

On Ozzy's newest single, his guitar player (Zakke Wilde?) plays an
incredible solo-one of the best I've ever heard.

Does anyone know how he gets that tone? Is he running his Les Paul
    staight into a Marshall?

    Ozzy sure can pick 'em!

The heart of Zakk's tone comes from Les Paul's (good ones!) outfitted
with active EMG 85 pickups! He has a few chorus/delay units in line
(noteably the Roland DEP-5 units!), but basically it's the Paul into
his (formerly Metaltronix M1000's, reportedly now) Lee Jacksonized
    AMPEG amps!

    Agreed, it's a ripping tone!!

There's an interview with Zakk in the March issue of Guitar Magazine,
in which he describes how he acheived THAT guitar tone. From what I
remember, he uses Les Pauls (as described previously) into a Marshall
JCM800, using only a Boss Distortion (can't remember which one) pedal.
The secret to the killer tone, was that he actually used 4 guitar
sounds layered over one another (?? I think it was something along
    those lines ??)

Sorry about the vagueness, it was a while ago I read it, but I do
recall that he ran a pretty standard rig, but had a few tricks up
    his sleeve (production-wise).

If anyone is interested I can dig the mag out and post a full & proper
    overview.

    Cheers,
    	    Jeff.
