2525.0. "Hotrod A Fender Champ (DIY Project)" by RGB::ROST (The Creator has a master plan) Wed May 13 1992 11:35

Got this off the USENET. Discusses a DIY project to hotrod a Fender
    Champ.

In the latest issue of Glass Audio, V4 #2, there is a "modification"
article on the Fender Champ; 'The Remaking of a Champ' by Kirk Elliott.

In reality, this is from the ground up a new design with lots of details
on design trade-offs, etc. The amp was designed for studio work and
claims low noise, stability, and hum-free operation.

The preamp portion has three gain stages (two 12AX7A's) with some fixed
and variable EQ. The variable EQ is bass and treble. In addition, there
are two volume controls; actually three counting the master volume.

The output stage is a single 6L6GC in a topology designed for long-life
with lots of overdrive and lots of harmonics. Power output is claimed
to be 12.5W into 8ohm. This is more than a stock Champ. The recommended
speaker is the Celestion G8S-50, but any 8ohm instrument speaker will work.

The article includes construction hints, but remember you are dealing
with voltages close to 400V and a screw-up could cost you your life.
Also, Glass Audio is not Heath Kit; you have to know something about
schematics and construction to fill in the blanks. Otherwise I can't think
of a better choice for jumping into the wonderful world of do it yourself
   tubes.

      Regards,
      Bob Manley

can ask for a specific issue as a sample or not. One year subscription
