2483.0. "MIDI Mixers" by KDX200::COOPER (Step UP to the RACK !) Thu Mar 26 1992 13:40

I'll cross post this to COMMUSIC too, but can anyone tell me about
MIDI mixers ?? Me thinks I need one, and a friend has one (with PC software,
286PC AND a MIDI card) for cheap !

Is it possible for me to run all my toize into the mixer and use it with my
guitar rig ??

This particular model is a Unicorn 7S MIDI Mixer.

8 Stereo inputs - (7) 1/4", (1) RCA
Internal Noise gate
2 stereo FX busses
Headphone jack
Stereo outs (to my power amp ??)
Chain (in and out).

Seems like I could store my favorite configs as patches and call them up
from my controller, or in the studio, use the PC for it.

Any info/ideas would be TRES - COOL !!

Thanks,
jc

I'm not sure what you mean by "run all my toize into it". Do you
have an assorted meant of synths, guitars, etc?

Anyhow, your average MIDI mixer stores patches that you can call with
a program select MIDI message. Each patch stores volume, FX, pan and
possibly eq settings for all the channels.

Patch 1 may have all the inputs at level X. Patch 2 could be identical
except channel Y is boosted n db. You start your tune and switch to
patch 2 at the appropriate time. Yowza, channel Y is now boosted n db
and you can do your solo. Solo over? Back to patch 1...

Yamaha had a MIDI mixer with motorized faders, but it didn't seem to
catch on right well. (Big bux).

I think they really stretch the term "mixer" a bit...

Agreed. I have it BAD !

Trouble is:

How does one make two multiFX processors works well with two different
preamps with one input signal ?? Wouldn't it be most convenient to have
a PC do all the work for you, and have a really nifty user interface
(runs under WINDOWS!) ?

Good grief, Jeff, why can't we just plug our Les Pauls into our tube
combos and get on with it???!!! Yer gonna need a freakin' software
support team to travel to your gigs, fercrisssakes! "Hey Norman, can
you crunch out some code during break that'll loop my stereo at home
thru my mixer here at the club, and make my guitar signal come out of
the beer tap?...yeah, use DECnet and the modem I brought with me..."

Well, good points for sure. The 'less is more' theory is pretty sound,
(obviously works for y'all) but this is 1992 - I'm trying to stay away
from tree hugging. :) I get bored playing with a guitar, a cord, and
an amp... In about one hour - then I start looking for something to make
it sound better (different?).

I guess if you wanna be a sound fiddler, that's ok. I donno, to me,
people like Ronnie or BB or Eddie just get one sound and go...works
    for them.

You may have opened pandora's box Coop. Programming ain't where it's
at - playing is. Joe Blow club_goer won't know the difference, and the
guys in your band probably won't know either.

Well, so much for a discussion on a MIDI Mixer eh ??

Edd:
Doncha think a 36 space rack complete with a racked 286 with a pop-up
mixer graphic, real time FX control, and remote MIDI controller would
be the cats meow ?? Coupled with a few 4x12... Slobber.

Tell it to George Lynch! His rack makes mine seem rather small and his
    sound is smokin'!

Actually, a 286 might be a bit light for heavy real-time applications
like this. I would suggest a 486 50 Mhz as a minimum, and, of course,
you would need a Terabit disk drive to store the needed data. I don't
think that a programming staff would be necessary after initial design
and debugging so you could probably save a good deal of money farming
that job out to a software house. Amiga has some neat packages so you
might look into having a small network with an Amiga, 486, and if you
wanted to be able to access your net from work, perhaps a VAX4000vlc
would be a nice addition. Since you are developing a multivendor
environment, you might qualify for discounts for service from the
various vendors. You will probably never get your picture on the cover
of the Rolling Stone, but you might just make PC World. Just think of
all of the different ways you could sound almost just like a real
    Marshall.

Actually, it isn't a bad idea. Some of the biggest people in the
music industry use lots of computers. Especially for composing
and writing music. I think that sometimes we are jaded because we work
    in the industry.

At one point I was seriously considering sending my resume to New England
Digital, the makers of the Synclavier synth/songwriting system. Only thing
was I didn't want to live in White River Junction, VT. I'd still like to
find a way, someday, to combine my computer knowledge with my musical skills.
Maybe someday...

This is drifting way off the topic but....

Actually an Amiga isn't a bad idea, just sring for the video toaster
and make your own animated videos, do the multi-track masters etc in
the same multi-media studio. Some of the newer dos applications make a
50Mhz 486 sound like a great idea too. You could even get a multi-track
direct to disk board or two for the 486 and do digital masters to 3.5
    floppy!

Someday the studio (not the rack) will have a compute platform of some
sort with multi-media capabilities, but not until GTS runs down :-)

Yessiree,

I too plan on someday getting a synth/sequencer for my little home studio,
and this little mixer with a PC would be awefully nice at mixdown time.
