2452.0. "Hollies Long Cool Woman" by GRANPA::CORTYL () Wed Feb 26 1992 09:09

Could someone describe to me (tablature would be great) the beginning
of the Hollies "Long Cool Woman" up to the first verse???

I just haven't been able to get this one right.

    Thanks,

    Chris (Career amateur)

Sorry Chris, I'd be glad to show ya how, but the last effort I took to
"draw" something out (Badfinger's Baby Blue fiasco) was less than
    translate-able....I'm just a play-it-by-ear kinda guy.....

Long Cool Women ??

It's a blues/fifth thing. The whole song is the tone though - gotta
do a single-coil thing there with lots of "pop". Steve, didn't we platy that
out of E ??

    Hey Steve,
I think I forgot to thank you for the Badfinger thing a couple of years
ago. Whaddya mean fiasco? I thought it was the balls. Except for one
small thing, I thought you nailed it. Maybe it's because I'm used to
reading tablature for pedal steel. I never did get a recording of the
song, but whenever I'm at home and it comes on the radio, I play along
and it sounds ok to me.

I have a tape of that song - I thought I made copies for everyone that was
involved in that deal, but I mighta missed one. If you want, I can drop you
a copy of it....

Thank you!! I don't know tab stuff, so I invented that cumbersome
method of trying to describe all those little riffs....I love that tune,
and if it hadn't been for the Blair unit, I never would have learned
it....he was dying for me to teach it to him, so he locked me in his
practice room until I had it nailed. Grabbing all those chords and riffs
by ear was one HECK of alot easier than trying to write it down for youse
    guys. Glad you enjoyed it.....

    made my day Neal!

    Coop,

I *think* he's lookin' for that song opening solo riff that kinda
walked all around the 4th, 5th, and 6th strings with alot of open
notes...I opened the tune with it, remember....I would NEVER hit
    perfectly!

Play the low 3 notes of an Em - quickly drag the Em up 3 frets
to the 5th fret, quickly down to the 4th fret, down back to
Em at the 2nd fret, open it to Em7, down to G, G/F# bas, G
to A-D-G, G bass, F# bass, and start over.

If you're near Marlboro, I'd be glad to show you.

Btw, I have the words too if anyone wants 'em. Talk about
    	tough to understand.

Thanks for all of the prompt attention. I wish I could get this sort
of response when I enter one of URGENT, technical, work-related
    questions (ha).

I appreciate the offer for the hands-on tutorial (in .8), however, I
live (and work) in Harrisburg, Penna.

    Thanks again.

re: .8

Hey, if you'd be willing to post the words I'd love to see them! I've been
hearing that song since it was a hit on the radio (is it really *that* long
ago? Yikes!) and still can't figure out 90% of what's being said...

"Saturday night I was downtown, working for the FBI"...

Thanks in advance,

Ummm, no posting words. It's against policy...

However - MAILing them wouldn't be a bad idea, but I didn't say that.

RE: Policy

It's kind of a grey-area thing...But I figure its better safe than sorry.
I mean you alway see "Reprinted without permission" in these conferences,
but with all the hub-bub lately...

Thanks,

Funny...

We do a song called "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana...

the lyrics (or our version) go:

"Mashed Potatoes, pass the gravy"

Nobody would ever know, so WHO CARES !?!?!?!?!

My high school band did "Lookin out my back door" by
Creedence Clearwater. One line is something like..

    	   "listenin' to Victrolo" or something

I used to say "listenin' to Beckola"

Gak, I'm *sure* it doesn't say that! If you want lyrics for that one
that are right (or at least close), check out last month's Guitar World
(I think), which has a transcription of it with words.

FWIW, I still can't picture you guys doing that song. Seems to me that
nobody in your band has a voice that's that raw...

Tom sings it. He does okay.

*I* can't beleive that someone got PAID to transcribe that ridiculous
song !!!! Man I worked MONTHS (sic) to learn that lead... :)

Then we learned the other "top 10 tune" from that album and the damn lead is
identical!! At first I refused to play it, because its STOOPID, but when I
saw the dance floor fill when Stomp played it, I changed my mind. :)

FWIW - We know the real words, but why bother ?? We can be perverted and
no one knows the diff !! :)
