2448.0. "Band Names" by EZ2GET::STEWART (the leper with the most fingers) Fri Feb 21 1992 12:41

Mr. Mod - didn't see a band name note, and thought it might be an
amusing topic for world-wide contributions. If there is such a note,
please feel free to move this entry.

i was looking for such a note as well. We need a name for our band and
    our name-the-band bar-b-q was a washout. We play r 'n r, blues,c/w and
other for parties and weekend gigs. As of now we are "The Renditions"
but lets hear from you.....suggest a logo as well.

.. wasn't sure which name you thought would attract gay men, so
included them both. Some friends and I have been working up some
gay-positive tunes, and I've been having a great time thinking up band
    names:

Homosexuals in the Workplace (still my favorite)
    The 3-dollar bills
Unamerican Activity (not exactly gay, but kinda cool)

2448.27strange bands I've been inGOOROO::CLARKSaddam still has a job, do u?Wed Feb 26 1992 18:1411
when I was in school I was in a punk-like band called the Chunx.
Guess where that came from :-)

When I lived in New Jersey I was in a band with 2 guys from
Keansburg, which at that time was getting a lot of press for
being the home of a hit man named Donald Nash. This guy was
killing somebody in a parking garage and 3 TV crew technicians
saw him, so he killed all 3 of them. So the name of the band
was going to be Donald Nash and the Dead Technicians. But we
wimped out and changed it to Silent Witness, which was a pretty
    good name for a band.

Re: .20:

Lighten up. My roommate/drummer's homophobia isn't mine, although
it does stop us from using an interesting name. (He's not worried about
Phallic Tragedy for that reason, more because they'll think he's the
tragedy... sigh, it seems like every interesting name offends someone.
I like that, personally.)

On that note, is "Unamerican Activities" used? I rather like it...

I thought my response was pretty light.

I plan to use the "Unamerican Activity" name for a band someday, but if
someone else wants to grab it first, I say go for it.

I've recently been thinking of using, "Live Nude Girls". Doesn't matter if
there's any women in the band or not, but it'd look great on the marquee of
any place we got a job! :-)

(And yes, I know Setzer used "Live Nude Guitars" as the name of an album, but
mine's different enough to be interesting...)

Since Phil's probably long gone, I'll explain...

The (Austin) Morris Oxford was a shooting brake aka estate

Some for now, I'll have to come back to the real good ones later.

On a similar note I get a kick of of band names that are sometimes
so similar that they confuse even the best of us. Not so much
the ones of the type that have say a UK distinction but for
instance if you don't confuse Monster Magnet with Bitch Magnet, etc.
then you're all right! Clawhammer, Jawhammer, etc.

Also, what about names that don't imply the style of music played
by the band at all, not that it matters but...

I can't think of one example at the moment but assume someone by
the name of the Psychefunkapus, who I have yet to hear but it
would be funny if they weren't some form of psychedelic or
at all funky but a barber shop quartet. Not that there's
anything wrong with barbers but maybe you know what I'm babbling
	about...

When I was a kid, I used to be in a band comprised of 2 guitars, a bass and
drums that did Ventures and Shadows stuff (this was a *long* time ago). One
day we were practicing at the drum player's house, and we got to talking to
his old man about how we couldn't think of a good name for our band. He
thought for about 10 seconds and piped up with "Well, how about '3 Picks
an' a Pair o' Sticks'?" We were acutely embarressed. After noticing that
we were all staring glassy eyed at the walls he said, "OK, just 'Picks 'n
Sticks' then".

After replaying this scene in my mind many times over the years, I've de-
cided that this name is so incredibly, devastatingly, gawdawfully bad, that
it's actually pretty good. I still go into an immediate stupor whenever I
hear it.

Oh well, talent does what it can, genius does what it must.

Myself and some friends put together a band to do a few Working Men's Clubs
gigs (UK readers may be familiar with these establishments), for the money
of course.
Bands which do WMC gigs are renowned for their cringingly awful names (amongst
other things), so we set out to try and think up the worst name we could (to
take the maximum p*ss).

We went on the road as "Ebony Moonbeam".

    re. "picks and sticks"

Well, I probably wouldn't go for that name either, but I like the
thought. Its something that sorta makes sense as opposed to some of
the other names that have been mentioned here. I like names that imply
something. Like Justus Brothers. Another example is my pool league
team's name. We consist of 4 guys and a girl. Our name is "8 Balls and
    a Pocket".

In one band that I started, we were thinking about a name and what we
did was go thru albums to look at titles to get ideas. It only took a
1/2 hour from the very first mention of "we got to get a name" until we
    settled on one - "Bootleg".

"sakman" Who laments over Bootleg at just the thought. It was the best
band you'll never see and the best group I've ever been a part of. We
    "coulda been contenda's".

I was briefly in a band called Wreak Havoc and the Bundletwitchers.
    Fortunately, we never played out.

I was in a band called the MindErasers. Don't use the name though, we
still get together and play everyone once in an age.

I was in a band that couldn't think of a name, but our first gig was on
December 7, so we called ourselves Daze of Infamy.

I played in a bluegrass band when I was 17,and at that time there
was an ad on British TV for the gas company whose slogan was "High
Speed Gas",so we changed it to call ourselves High Speed Grass....
we were too naive to realise there were *THREE* drug connotations
in there for the price of one! (or was it only me who was naive??)
Lost a lot of potential gigs thro' that name, but we attracted
a hell of a lot of people who wouldn't have gone to see a bleugrass
    band in the first place!!
