2437.0. "'92 consumer trade show" by FREEBE::REAUME (KH/REXX SnoB) Tue Feb 11 1992 18:04

Talk about lucking out. I was in Sacremento, CA on business for the last
few weeks. While there I checked out the local music store to see what they
had in stock. I noticed an ad for a Music and Sound Expo. Looked interesting.
What it turned out to be was the largest consumer music trade show in northern
California. It was only two exits down the freeway from my hotel!
For only six bucks I had to check it out!
It was held at the Radisson Hotel in Sacremento and although there were
a lot of industry reps I'm assuming it was only the brands carried by the
sponsor store, Skip's Music. In any case Skips carries a wide range of
brands, so this was not really a lop-sided expo.
There was something there for drummers and keyboardists. I did check out the
Roland, Ensoniq, and E-Mu keyboard demos, nice new gear. Just not in my line!
No doubt the guitar players had the biggest representation. Gibson and
Fender were there, representing the standard models and some new stuff.
The most interesting guitars were the Ibanez Customs and high-end Yamaha's.
Nice stuff. Wild graphics and mirrored pickguards in some Ibanez's and the
Yamaha Pacifica and newer RGZ's stood out. The dude doing the demo from Ibanez
got a well deserved applause after an incredible presentation.
Amplifiers? Both Peavey and Ampeg were pushing their new flagship amps.
The Lee Jackson designed Ampegs sounded nice. I heard a few people play through
them with good results. I got to plug into the new Peavey EVH 5150 stack.
Great sounding amp! I think it lives up to its billing! I was real impressed
with the sound and quality of the amp. It would be nice if it had seperate
tone controls for each channel though. The Yamaha/Soldano stuff was prominent
and sounded decent. Marshall was there but nothing new was shown.
Digitech showed off the latest version (#3) of the GSP-21. This model is
called the Legend and has some enhancements. The foot controller is layed
out much better and the first patches are now on the lower row. There
is also a new guitar processor (RP-1) that is all self-contained in the
foot controller itself. It looks like it is functionally similar to the
GSP-7.
The star of the show had to be the Alesis ADAT. I was totally floored
by the demo. Eight tracks of CD quality sound for $4,000. It uses regular
Super-VHS tapes! The tape runs faster than in a VCR so you get 40 minutes
of recording time on a T-120 tape. And these units can by tied together
for seamless synchronization! The demo I saw had two ADAT's tied together.
Sounded fantastic! I would forget about any other eight track recording system
out there until the competition catches up with Alesis!

I spent three and a half hours checking out all the products and demos!

...and the second and subsequent ADATs don't cost as much as the first!

In order to sync the dex up you need an outboard box, but that's a one
    time only expenditure.

2437.3a little a dis, a little ADATFREEBE::REAUMEKH/REXX SnoBWed Feb 12 1992 10:0913
According to Ted from Alesis they checked the synchronization on two
decks by recording two identical tracks on two linked ADATs, played
them back together with one channel inverted. The result? As expected:

NOTHING - total cancellation. I also got to see them speed up the
pitch on one ADAT and the other tracked right with it.
The only options mentioned were the remote controls. The LRC is the
little remote control that comes with the ADAT. If you want maximum
control the BRC (for Big Remote Control) is going to be available
shortly. It allows you to title insert points in the mix (like
    Chorus #1). Neat huh?

Oh Yeah - Tascam was at the show as well, with Blues Saraceno doing a
presentation on how he did his demo (on Tascam gear, of course).
I think Tascam hated the ADAT.

I forgot to mention sound reinforcement. The most visible at this
recent show: JBL with the SR 47** series, Peavey with their broad
range of SR gear, and RAMSA previewed a new line of mixers and power
amps, as well as their incredibly compact speakers. Their subwoofers
    are loud for their size!

I heard a 5150 amp at lunch today. WOW, I was impressed!! Two
    thumbs up!

It sounds like what it was modeled after...a 100wt plexiglass amp on
steroids! It is very similar to the tone Vito Brata used on the
PRIDE album...clean but singing distortion with a heavy midrange.

The amp has a lot of flexiblity, and sounds predy damn neat. Acton
Music has a stack they said they would let go for $1500.

Good - I'm not the only one that thinks so!!!!

Check out the resonance knob. It's not one of those non-functional
jobbies, that's for sure. Like I said, if I wasn't already in
amplifier overdrive... Besides, the only format the 5150 comes in is
a stack for now. I talked with the Peavey rep at the show and asked him
if a 5150 combo or rack mount was in the works. He said not presently,
    but if there's a demand....
Oh Yeah, regarding the use of the new Peavey logo on the 5150.
Apparently Eddie had a few brewskies and told Hartley the old logo
looks like a kid drew it. That story may or may not be true, but
I sort of agree. The new logo looks a lot better.
