2436.0. "who knows stuff about Alvarez" by PELKEY::PELKEY (Snert ! Fetch me my dagger.) Tue Feb 11 1992 09:13

Thinking about picking up an Alvarez with a Biphonic pickup.

anybody seen any Alvarez dealers in the Central Mass, Southern
New Hampshire area ?

Anyone offer any words on these ? (Seem like nice guitars, I've
played a few of the mid range ones.)

What I'm looking for is the 5025 or 5022 model with the Bi-phonic
circuitry.

I've got a price, with case and pikcup up, around 700.

I've got a real good deal going for me locally, (even trade for two
of my Inabez acoustics) but I want something to check out before I step
in it. (The place I'll pick it up from will order it for me.)

thanks.

2436.1Alvarez in Manchester, NH.SOLVIT::FRASERRollover: 1000 Points When Lit!Tue Feb 11 1992 09:4017
Dunno about these Inabez acoustics - any good? ;*)

Seriously - there's an Alvarez dealer in Manchester, NH - I
think it's called the Music Factory, located in an old
theatre/cinema just off Elm St. and virtually opposite Ted
Herbert's. Sandy knows the name of the street - so send her
mail if you need more specific directions (SMURF::S_FRASER).

It's the only Alvarez dealer I know of and they have a pretty
fair selection - when I was last there, they had maybe 20-25
Alvarez on the wall. Prices were reasonable as marked and
        negotiable on top...

        Hope this helps,

        Andy

ar-ar-ar...

Seriously,,

there similar to the Op 24 circuitry you'll find in the big dollar
ovations..

Anyway, I checked around enough,, i just ordered it...

Screw it..

The guitars are nice, and the circuitry is wot I'm looking
for,.

Besides, what have I got to lose, it's an even-up trade for my
two Ibanez..

Let you all know in a bout 3 weeks..

I think you made a good decision - I've tried a couple of them
out and they felt and sounded good to me, acoustically at least
        - I didn't get around to plugging in, but if the pickup/EQ is
anything like Ovation/Tak, then you'll have an excellent
        guitar!

2436.7Music-1 ChelmsfordSTAR::SALKEWICZIt missed... therefore, I am Wed Feb 12 1992 10:1617
Thers a place near the center of Chelmsford MA that has a stock of
abour twent Alvarez,.. and -Yari's ,.. the -Yari's are,.. um
how do you say,.. fargin excellent! I love those guitars. I don't
go in there anymore because the guy doesn't like to clean up my drool.

Seriously though, the name of the place is now MUSUC-1 or some such
thing. The guy who runs it is named Kenny,.. I can probably help
you get a good deal,.. I mean I've been haggling with the guy for
about a year over various guitars that I ended up not buying,..
so if he thinks I really might buy something,.. I bet I can talk him
down some,... and with that deal I struck on the Marshall,... I seem
to be on a roll :-). So,.. if you're going to cceck that place out,..
drop me a line. I'm sure he's a dealer by the number of axes he carries
but I haven't asked that question.,...

The Yari's are nice, but a little too expensive for me...

I really didn't need to step up that high.... Maybe I'll regret it,
but probably not..

On Friday, the store where I ordered my (Alvarez) 5022 from
called me up actually.. for a moment I though my axe was in,
then I learned, no, not yet, but he asked me to come in and check
out the new Yari lit he just got in. When I ordered my 5022,
he didn't have any Yari stuff... SO I stopped in on the way home...

I gotta tell, either the photos and write ups don't do them justice,
or I'm just not a believer..

They may be top-draw quality, but I was kinda turned off by
most of the body designs. Most of the standard designs (non
cutaway) reminded me of the Gibson J50s, and I'm really not
a big fan of those styles (narrow shoulders..)

And the cutways just didn't take me..

The Garcia model was pretty nice, but again, the body style was
a little too off colour for me.. Although the laced inlay was
pretty fargin nice... (but for the money, I'm not sold... Plus
it looked HUGE. There was a picture of Garcia holding one, and
even with the sie of Jerry, it still looked like a MASSIVE guitar.)

The Lute backs were interesting enough, but not being an Ovation
lover, I'd probably find the same problem with these as
I did with my Baladier I had in a previous life... (They tended
to lean back on me.. Can't see how the Yari Lute backs would be much
different.)

With list prices of whopping magnitudes (some up to $2,700) I'm
real glad I decided to go for tohe 5022 with the Biphonic circuit.

(I'm pretty phsyced too, I was told it'll be about three more weeks
max...)

a few other things I did notice..

1. The discontinued a few of the 1991 styles. Which seemed to make sense as
they appeared to be price tiers, and offered basically the same guitar
but with less comsetics than the 5022.

2. They've introduced a new pickup,, Something (maybe Pro) 500 can't
recall exactly.....

It's not the same biphonic config as what the previously offered as their
top-o-the-line pickup. It's more like a OP24 system, with a three band
EQ, plus a Volume, and a Contour control..

I stuck with the Biphonic,, (I found out that this biphonic allows
you to control the tone colour of the 3 top strings and 3 bottom
strings separately. (I'd love to know ahead of time how that works.)
as well as the standard three band EQ.

Anyone offer a quick run down on the Biphonic ?

Well, We're still waiting for the 5022 with the biphonic thang in it...

Sheesh, I figured I'd have seen it by now... Due in this week though.

Keeping fingers crossed that it all works out!
