2310.0. "Peavey Pro-Fex Multi-Effector" by DWOVAX::MROSENBERG () Thu Aug 29 1991 16:11

    Has anyone heard the Peavey Pro-Fex MIDI controlled Multi-Effector?

    My local dealer (who has none in-stock) is *raving* about them compared
    to some A.R.T. products (also not in-stock). He says the Peavey units
    sound great and are built like tanks. There aren't too many places
    around here to get a listen to one.

    Some Specs:

    	20-20K Bandwidth
        16 bit A/D with 64x oversampling
        24 bit effect processing
        18 bit D/A
    	1 rack space
    	128 presets
    	16 effects at once (in any order, parallel or serial)
    	effects include:
    		Compressor
    		Distortion
        	Overdrive
	    	Chorus
    		Flange
    		Delay
    		Auto Pan
    		Pitch Shifter
    		Reverb
    		Exciter
    		Coil Tap Simulator
    		Envelope Filter
    		Guitar EQ
    		5 Band Graphic EQ
    		3 Band EQ with sweepable mid
    		4 Band Parametric EQ
    		Speaker Simulator
    		Hum Filter
    	        Noise Gate

       MIDI IN/OUT/THRU
       Effect Parameter control from MIDI
       Inputs for 4 analog footswitches
       2 Mono ins (front and rear)
       Stereo Out
       Headphone Jack with Volume control
       20x2 LCD display
       LED level display

    The specs look great, but I wonder how it sounds? I'm also
    interested in the ART SGE Mach II or the upcoming ART SGX-2000.

2310.1Just say `NO' Scary ...RAVEN1::JERRYWHITEHere's a quarter ...Thu Aug 29 1991 16:529
    Sheesh ... the only things it doesn't do is:

    	- wash the car
    	- feed the kids
    	- say `not tonight ...'  8^)

    What's the financial damage on one of these ?

    Daddy's up here in N.E. is selling them for $580.

2310.3Like I need it, but ...RAVEN1::JERRYWHITEHere's a quarter ...Thu Aug 29 1991 17:213
    Is that a cash price or list ... doesn't sound *too* bad.

    Scary (who's got his GP8 in a box ...)
2310.4List for $799, Sell for $559DWOVAX::MROSENBERGThu Aug 29 1991 17:482
    They list for $799, but they're going for $559 at some local stores
    in Delaware. Most of the big mail-order houses I called don't have it.
2310.5More Specs...DWOVAX::MROSENBERGThu Aug 29 1991 18:0013
    Oops,

    I got the bandwidth wrong in .0, it should be

    	12Hz to 16.4kHz

    More Specs:

    	Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 90dB
        Switch for Line-Level or Instrument Level pad on input signal.
        Separate gain control for input
    	Reverb Types:
    		Room/Stage/Hall/Plate/Tunnel/Spring/Gated/Reverse Gated

Seems like that band width is gonna crush that 'exciter' and distortion...
If I remember correctly the SGE had a 20-20 band width...

2310.7No Big Deal!HAMER::KRONMARSHALLWILLBUTFENDERCONTROLFri Aug 30 1991 11:563
     what kind of guitar do you have that needs 20 to 20k bandwidth.....
    not meaning to be a wiseguy (for once) but even if you had it it
    wouldn't make a whole lot of difference anyway thru a guitar amp!
2310.8DNEAST::BOTTOM_DAVIDUNIX is cool...Fri Aug 30 1991 15:267
The guitar is not the issue. The bandwidth is desirable as many of the effects
chorus, exciter etc. will expand the useful bandwidth of the original signal.

I used to use a 30-16Khz bandwidth processor, now I use a 10-20Khz processor.
The difference is noticable even to my hearing impaired ears.

Agreed. I notice the diff between my old DSP128 and my new DSP128+...
ESpecially for those HUGGGGEEEE verbs...

2310.10Sounds great to Me!DWOVAX::MROSENBERGTue Sep 03 1991 18:2513
    Well... I finally listened to one and it knocked my socks (and shoes)
    right off!

    I'm not a connoisseur of signal processors, but this unit impressed me.
    Some really great presets. I may buy one instead of waiting for the
    ART SGX-2000. I also liked the user interface - it was very easy to
    edit the patches and effect chains.

    Re: the last few notes

    If Bandwidth is an issue, I didn't notice it.
