2283.0. "GUITARnotes Tape VOL. IV (picks up where III left off)" by CAVLRY::BUCK (Whatever happened to jane? Jane? JANE?!) Wed Aug 07 1991 17:52

Anybody up for VOL IV ?

As Vol III nears completion, I thought I would take the ball while the
momentum is still going and offer to compile VOL IV. As with VOL III,
I'd be willing to put one together on a few conditions:

o You send me the tape *exactly* as you want it to be heard -
    	  I ain't eq'ing anything ! 8^)

        o Send it in it's final form - I don't have a 4 track to do any
    	  sort of a mixdown.

Aside from that, I'd be willing to do it. Lemme know what ya think !

As with VOL III, which seemed to be compiled without a hitch lets offer
    some guidelines for submissions:

o Send me something that's FINISHED, requiring NO eq'ing (I have
       minimal equipment...thanks!)
    o Let's shoot for a deadline of Jan 1st, 1992, or when I receive
       90 minutes of material.
o I also encourage those folks WITHOUT big_bucks recording gear, etc.,
to submit entries. This isn't a contest, it's an overview...so lets
       hear it !!!
o If you give me a 90min tape with your entry, I can send you your
copy back on it, if you so choose.
    o Otherwise, I can send folks a copy on a hi-bias Maxell for $3
       including postage.

As with VOL III, I don't want to get bogged down in details in this
effort, so - send me tapes!

    Send 'em to ....

Absolutely, I been dyin to do this. I missed the third submittal
because I got extremely busy here for a few weeks. Now the fires are
under control, I 'd love to have you guys give me a listen. I even got
a new 424 just the other day. So unless I get canned (layoffs coming
in Sept I hear) or something else, count me in. In fact, I'd suggest
that we make this a regular event, say bi annual.

Or continuous... (once the current suck... um, compiler:-) has
90 minutes worth put out a new tape).

We just got a 424 ourselves, once we find the time and
patience to put down something a little tighter than our
initial attempts, we'll be sending something in...

Just a reiteration (sanity check) here folks...

The GUITAR Noters tapes are about PLAYING. This is NOT the Audio
Engineering conference! This is NOT the COMMUSIC conference. Just
wanted to make that clear on submissions. I don't give a crap if you
record yourself playing solo guitar in the middle of a freeway on a
$5.00 Radio Shack cassette player...sound quality does not matter here.

So, don't worry if you don't have $10K worth of recording gear, or that
you're not the next Eddie Kramer...that's not what this is about.
The Volume 4 compilation is currently under way...if you have a
recording of your playing...send it in.

    Best regards,
    Bill

    Hey everyone...

Well, seems as if we've hit a lul in the submissions for GUITARnotes
VOL IV, so I just thought I would put in a status note...

Again, there is no final submission date, and the tape will be
available when 90 min worth of music has arrived. So far, only
20 minutes or so has been accounted for. So, if you have something
you'd like to submit to VOL IV...send it to:

    left to fill.

If you have submissions, send em in. My address is posted in -2.

If you think you might have something done in a month or so, send it
in. Once again there is no submission date...just until the tape

    to flow in).

I've just 'released' an 'album' of originals which I'd like to get some
feedback on. There's about 40 mins of material; is there a limit on
what an individual can get on the GN tape, or could the whole thing
fit, or would some other method (private distribution) be better?

In any event, I'll be slingin' a few your way, Buck. -jn-

I'm filling a C-90 worth of material. There are about 45 minutes worth
of time left. In all fairness, I'd like to see 3 tunes submitted,
tops, to allow the most available entires and styles on this release.
2283.21RAVEN1::JERRYWHITEHey you're pretty good - NOT !Wed Dec 04 1991 00:076
Well, I submitted a LOT of material to VOL III, but some was just
filler material, since I wanted to get this thing out to the masses.

My suggestion, enter the best 3, save the rest for the next volume.

2283.22Some non-obvious but important considerationsDREGS::BLICKSTEINSoaring on the wings of dawnThu Dec 05 1991 13:2636
    I agree with Buck.

There's a couple of things to consider that aren't obvious unless
    you think about them

I think if you want to fill a whole tape (or even a major portion of
    one):

    	1) You could really just offer the tape yourself.

I mean someone wanted to do that when I was the COMMUSIC tape
guy and I rejected it - think about it - it is, in effect,
asking me to be his recording company (make all the copies,
    	   hassle with the distribution, etc.)

I know you didn't intend this when you asked the question,
but in effect your asking the GN volunteer to do a lot of work
mainly for just you and (unlike a "sampler" from several
contributors) it's something you could do yourself.

    	2) I pretty sure the concensus is that something that is CALLED
a "Guitar Notes" tape should be a "sampler" from a variety
    	   of noters.

I intend to get EVERY GN and COMMUSIC tape that comes out
because I want to hear at least a "sample" of what every
    	   other noter is doing.

I certainly do NOT intend to buy every single "album" that
every noter produces - just can't afford it, even at media
cost. There's a lot of you guys and you are very productive.

So, I hope you see that when you think about it, it's really a bad
    idea.

    db,

I realized at the time that asking for an entire tape side was an
inappropriate request, and that the obvious solution is to distribute
myself. I just wasn't sure how to distribute to an unknown audience
(that is, an audience containing some who might see it as 'junk mail').
I think that by announcing here that a tape is available, and submitting
a few tracks, those who are interested can privately request a copy from me.
I guess that's the whole theory behind a 'sampler', even though it may
not be the intended purpose of the GN tapes. -jn-

Ok, well, in the "received" dept., Tom Gallo sent in one original tune
of AOR-style rock. Joe Minville has two (an original and a cover)
featuring himself on guitar with his post-60s surf-punk band, Instant
Now. Justine Sullivan sent in three excellent (original) acoustic folk
numbers. Bob Schuchard's submission consists of three (original) songs
in varying musical styles. Dave Bottom sent in two AOR-style rock
originals, one (Hold on) featuers a killer guitar sound (KH's) and
hook! Jim Cheney sent in three acoustic-based original tunes with a
folk/country edge. Jon Nelson sent in two original AOR-style rock
    tunes.

In the "expecting" dept., I'm awaiting one jam tune from Tom Desrochers
and Bob Conroy, one or two (cover?) tunes from HardBall/Coop, two
original rockers from Brian K, a live rocker (cover) from Cheryle West,
a studio tune (original?) from Greg House, and possibly one or two

Well, I didn't think I would have to do this, but looks like the time
    has come...to set a deadline!!

The compilation for GUITARnotes Volume IV is very nearing completion!
There is about 15 minutes of spare time left on the tape (total) to
fill, so at this point, I would like to say:

"If you plan to send something for Vol IV, please start making
arrangements to finalize mixes, make copies, send tape. I'm going to
set aside Friday, January 10th as the LAST POSSIBLE DAY that I will
accept ANY tape from ANYONE. If by Midnight on 10-JAN-92, I do not
have a tape in my hand, consider it material for GUITARNotes Volume V!
Actually, at the rate tapes have been flowing in, I expect the time
left on the tape to be filled far before the 10th (but it's a date,
    just in case!)."

And with that, lets start looking forward to GUITARnotes Volume IV...
quite possibly the best CVG::GUITAR compilation to date!

Just to clarify, I sent Buck my 3-song demo tape. The first 2 songs

BUT, don't worry...if you sent something in, and it can't seem to fit

I think that the tape is full as of last count... There has been
a few notes that were blown away with the last system crash... There
had only been an older copy of the backup.. Those had indicated that
any new entries should be put on hold for future use.

In light of all the recent double-releases (Springsteen, G&R), perhaps
we could synch the release of GNIV with the soundtrack for the movie?

Who's up for 'Bride of GNIV'?

Speaking of double releases, maybe we should make it a two album set
    and include Vol. V...........

you understand. I do plan to make this sealed and copies being sent

Ok kids, an update on this bugger...

The master tape is DONE! Copies are being made now, slowly but surely,
by me. I'll start sending some out the door ASAP (read next week). A
fellow noter has offered to help me with the dubbing, so it may move
quicker than expected (hopefully!!)...I'll know better later next week.

This is a great tape!! Lots of diversity...I think every genre is
represented here! I really think it will have been worth the wait.
Below is a listing of the final track layout:

    TRACK NOTER COMPOSITION NOTER COMPOSITION

01 Justine Sullivan The Water is Wide	Tom Benson	Fa-hoo
02 John Derrico Manchester Days	Mike Heiser	Greater is He
03 Joe Minville What am I to do? Mike Heiser Only One
04 John Reaume Best What I've Got Bill Buckley Leavin
05 Bill Buckley Bringin me Round Dave Bottom On the Mountain
06 Dave Bottom Hold On Tom & Bob 6 String Shuffle
07 Justine Sullivan Lil Piggy's got...	Tom Gallo	Long Gone
08 Cheryle West Goodbye to You Greg House Picture of You
09 Jim Cheney Country Girl	Jim Cheney	Fishin Time
10 Jon Nelson Mandolin Tune	Todd Brown	Sky Pilot
11 John Reaume R&R Party in St.	Bob Schuchard	Cliche's
12 Bob Schuchard Hiway Song Greg House	Out the Door
    13 Tom Desrocher Crossroads
    	  & Bob Conroy

NOTE: As some of you may note, some songs sent for submission did not
make it onto this tape. Sorry, but since I received SO many
submissions, I felt it better to mix the tape up with diverse styles
and noters, rather than have 3 or 4 songs by one person. I gave each
noter a 2 song limit. Sorry if there are any hard feelings, but look
at it this way, it should give Guitar Notes Volume V a good head
    start!!

Good to see some RO noters on this tape!! Welcome aboard!

    ...and away we go

    TAPE ORDERING:

Someone asked me off line how they could obtain copies of all 4 Guitar
    Notes Volumes. Hmmm, good question....anyone?

Anyone wishing a copy of GN Vol 4 can obtain one from me, as I have the
master tape. I'm not sure who is keeper of the first 3 volumes?!?

Send mail to CAVLRY::BUCK to discuss GN Vol 4 orders!!
