I'm wondering if anyone has had the pleasure of seeing/playing a new
bass guitar called the C.P. Thornton Bass. It is a work of most extra-
ordinary craftsmanship the likes of which, as the saying goes, you only
    dream about.

The guitar is made in Bryant Pond, Maine by the man it's named
    after...Chas. P. Thornton.

Just a bit about the guitar: There are two models he makes of the
4 and 5 string variety. They both sport a 5 piece neck through the
body. One model's neck is made of walnut/rock maple/wenge, and the o-
ther is made of rock maple/wenge. Both models have 3 piece bodies com-
posed of a Southern Ash core. One model has a Hawaiian Koa top and back
and the other has a choice of Quilted or Flame Maple top and back.
The pickups are 3 Bertolini "J" style active types that reproduce a
sustain and richness of sound that really can't be discribed in a note
file, but has to be experienced to believe.
His guitar was featured in the Spotlite column of Guitar Player of
June, 1991, and also in the Premier Edition of Bass Player magazine.
In May 1990, it was featured in GUitar Player L. A. Gear.

As one might imagine, the instrument isn't cheap, but I guess that
the proverbial "you get what you pay for" comes to mind. The guitars
are priced at retail for $2850 and $3050. THey are made to order and
substantial savings can be had if one wants to buy directly from the
    manufacturer.

I have to agree that there are many good bass guitars being made
today, but with the advent of the C. P. Thornton Bass, greatness has
    been achieved.

Just one more thing...(I couldn't edit my note,or more correctly, if it
is possible to, I don't know how)....The finishes are laquer of various
transparant colors that beautifully enhance the wood grain selected for
    that model of guitar...OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!
